PirateTUX in a Nutshell
I am a young man, in my late 20's, that has recently gotten sucked back into the world of *nix. I go by the username of PirateTUX to pay homage to my new master.
During the day, I work as a not-so-mild-mannered IT Support professional, supporting roughly 370 users spread over the entirety of what is commonly referred to as "the midwest". Originally from the middle of the midwest, I just recently moved southeast of the midwest to be with my fiance, who is also from the middle of the midwest.
At night, I enjoy various activities, including but not limited to: playing music with any of three bands I am currently involved with, lifting small yet challenging amounts of weight, and attempting to make sense of the monstrosity of parallelism (in computing, not philosophy) that has overcome the second bedroom in my humble apartment. Eleven servers make quite a noise.
I tend to be wordy, but try to stay interesting. If you want to know more about why my second bedroom's heat vent is closed, yet it stays nice and warm in there, read my blog. If you want to know more about my projects, or me, feel free to ask!

A lot of stuff has been happening on the Pirates game, so it's high time I shared a little with you all.
First of all, the first server build is done. That's right, we've got a bit of communication. Unfortunately, right now, it's a one-way conversation. The server is ready to receive...

So it's been a while.
In case you weren't already aware, MMORPG software systems are complicated. Very, very complicated. I mean, you're creating a whole world as a software system! So it's taking a while.
We have made progress, however.
My brother and I recently created a networked system...

As any seasoned software engineer will tell you, one of the most important things that you can do for yourself when working on a complex software system is to adhere as closely as possible to the software development lifecycle. Too many people want to just dive right in to the coding phase, and...

If you've ever had the (un)fortunate experience of having to work closely with a lawyer, you know that their profession seems to have it's own language. In fact, there are actually courses in law school that teach future attourneys to speak this strange mish-mash of English, French, Latin, and...

Just recently, the development group that I work with decided to adopt Linux as our standard operating system for the server-side of our project. Linux is a great choice of server OS for many obvious, and not-so-obvious, reasons. It's extremely flexible, stable, and secure, and works on just...

As with most early-to-mid twenty-somethings out there, I grew up on a healthy portion of video games. When I was about 6 or 7, my family invested in our first Nintendo, which changed our lives forever. Fortunately for us, it didn't shift our lives in the direction of endless bags of cheetoes and...

Greetings, Everyone
I wanted to take my first blog entry as an opportunity to introduce myself. I am a twenty-something computer geek from the midwestern United States. I work in IT support, which means that I'm the front-line guys when stuff breaks. The environment is, of course,...
