Tomorrow is National Working from Home Day in the UK. Who on earth thinks of these things I don't know, but that's what it is. So I've been looking at some home working gear for the media over here and thought it might be worth sharing my thoughts on the best.

I've had a load of stuff sent to me. Excellent phones, smaller-than-small laptops and deeply cool speakers from Logitech (which of course is the best thing about working from home - the music of your choice blaring out while you're, er, working, check out the Audiohub).

Nevertheless, the best stuff was non-technical and from Belkin. Belkin is one of the few companies so far that acknowledges technology has to go into people's homes and therefore shouldn't look like something off a trading estate. It's therefore launched two excellent products: Have a look at the laptop hideaway, for example. See the way it doesn't look like a computery thing at all but could fool you it's a magazine rack? It would fit into any living room. Oh, and have a glance at the cush-top. You'll have read the stories about people burning their legs and unmentionables because laptops are overheating; this proptects you and is comfortable to use.

I'd tell you more but my wife 'inherited' them almost immediately I'd opened the box. Which tells you all you need to know about whether they're any good.

P. S. Whether you're working from home or you're a manager commissioning people to work from home, don't forget to check the home worker's insurance and rental agreement or mortgage on their home. You might well find there's a clause about not conducting a business from home. This is usually OK as long as you've told the insurer/mortgage company/landlord but a lot of people forget, and there can be a lot of trouble as a result.
