Nothing special this time. just 'a bit of alright' as we say in England...
For some time my dads co-worker at his company was pondering on a frustration that had haunted them for some time. In the Untrasonics NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) industry, which is a world wide marketplace, they design alot of new and cutting edge electronics and software. Which of course has to work perfectly in unison. Now for this to be a perfect system, it requires some considerable resarch and development of suitable components, and many of which are new and work on new methods/theories. This means searching the various chip manufacturers for datasheets, often by the thousands.
To get to my point today, they also have a website and your average Ultrasonics guru/operator, they seldom have advanced knowledge of websites and so on. So upon visiting www.midas-ndt.co.uk for datasheets or information/support, they end up having to wait for ages on congested company networks while the required information is downloaded. This costs time and of course patience.
So I checked his server for PHP compatability, Success.
Apache (Unix) with PHP 4 !, hooyaaa..
So I did this little script to enable the downloading of the files, as well as the usual view inline option.
The script can be found in the daniweb code snippets section:
http://www.daniweb.com/code/snippet75.html
He first tried it on his local machine and promptly emailed me saying:
Nearly perfect.
The only trouble is it goes to a page titled:
file:///C:/temp/pdf.php?pdfile=DS031026
Showing a bunch of text.
Shortly after that he emailed me again with the following:
I suppose I should confess that it works a little better when put server side!
