I'm currently undecided whether to put it back because I did get a significant amount of negative feedback on it.

I found it very useful to get a list of new threads added since I last logged in and a list of the threads I posted in. The only problem I saw with them was that I had to click the button twice in order to get the correct list, probably some kind of sql not refreshing the list.

I liked it! It was so easy to find new, unanswered threads in my favorite topics. Maybe not at the bottom if people don't like it there but it was a good feature :(

The main criticisms I got about it were that they didn't like the way it stayed at the bottom, and it displayed wrong on iOS devices. If there's enough positive support, I'll definitely put it back. I just did get a lot of negative criticism about it.

I started out using it but found it just easier to use the heading links evntually. Also, the ribbon didn't display the forums I wanted it to display anyway.

It was easy to use.
Bring it back.

Why not as a thin strip between banner and nav tabs at the top? That should stop any nonsense with fixed positioning for handhelds.

I remember the last major change that introduced that ribbon and at the time people didn't like it.

However the links on it were very useful, my general approach to browsing was

  1. Check threads I havce replied to to make sure no follow-up is necessary
  2. Check for posts without answers in my subscribe forums to see if there was anything interesting to answer
  3. Assuming I need to waste more work time check generally for threads with new posts since my last visit

Currently there seems no way to reproduce this browsing behaviour. While I don't require those links on a fixed bar across the bottom of the screen it would be nice if they were somewhere.

When unsure, let the user decide. Make it an option in a user profile.

... Until you start making everything an option and it turns into the 500 pages of permissions that Facebook has, where no one fully grasps exactly what their permissions are set to, what options there are, or how to change options.

Probably this will be pushed little forward, as there is surely enough to fix from other things, but it would be cool to have kind of wysiwyg screen with options setting, so you change posts per page to 20, and the preview change accordingly, list of enabled things could be group of check boxes to choose....

Anyway, why not put 'New posts in subscribed threads' and 'New posts in Forums I posted before' at top of home page of logged in user? Or the stats page of user (which we can bookmark as our starting page). BTW the new simple listing of latest posts at home page is half way there and cleaner than old options and boxes approach. Kind of the same thing as the Dani's response to options suggestion.

I never really cared for the purple ribbon at the bottom. For me, it always got in the way and was annoying when it would slide into view when scrolling down the page.

And I agree with ardav. Having a similar banner near the top would be convenient and easily accessible. Or possibly a simple drop-down that would show your username, and when hovered, it would expand to show edit profile, private message count, my threads, logout links, etc.
