What do you think of a Game Development forum?

Expand Post »
In response to this thread, I have created a poll asking for supporters of a Game Development forum.

It's something that I find DaniWeb is lacking, it would attract a good crowd of game developers and programmers, and would keep game programming discussions seperate from other forums such as the C/C++ forum.

It would also help newbies to game programming (but not to programming in general) get started, based on their skill and knowledge.

Here are a couple of general programming forums that have a special forum dedicated to game development, for more ideas:I'm hoping to hear from you all.

Thanks

Re: What do you think of a Game Development forum?

My concerns ...

Which forum would someone coding a game in C++ post?
Is it wise to create a development forum that is a mixture of all programming languages?
It's better to create a forum only after the community has already expressed interest in wanting to talk about it. Otherwise, it will just remain empty.

Well, it's unavoidable that if a game development forum was created, some users will post their C++ game in the C++ forum. However, this is pretty common here, even if it's clearly labeled, people will post questions in "Community Introductions" about things such as the Windows Blue Screen of Death.

Most game development takes place in C/C++ anyway, so the amount of shell scripting and Perl would be minimal, and most likely be misplaced.

Exactly. That's what this poll is for.

I like the idea. In my opinion the language problem is negligible, as most game coding is done in C++ (I said most, so don't kill me). Also, this topic could bring up many intelligent discussions, as game programming is a very advanced subject.

Game development isn't just about code in C and C++, it involves a lot of issues -- Artificial Intelligence Algorithms (generic algos), Game Play Ideas( like D & D RPG's ), Pathfinding related things, Talk about OpenGL and DirectX, etc. etc. (many others)

Concept wise Game developement is generic. Also it has come to my attention that some core members( Joeprogrammer, Mattevans, Niek etc.) are into game development courses and of course even I have done some work in that area (though not any more).

Of coure I understand the situation you are in right now, so I would just leave it to you to decide or think about this at your own leisure...

And because of this, the Game Development Board would IMO be geared not to 'coding problems' but higher level 'gaming concepts', whereas "I need help on my TicTacToe homework" is a C/C++ problem.

Of course, this will cause some consternation in new posters when they do need help with their TicTacToe homework because, as we all know, new useres rarely read anything except the title of a forum and rarely read all the way to the description.

That's the way I see it, and I think it might not be a bad idea, personally. Certainly there is a whole demographic that would be attracted to such a forum, I suspect. And if it is not there, then people cannot make use of it.

Of course, if such a forum were created and remained dead as a Dodo after 3 months (or whatever) it could always be removed...

Re: What do you think of a Game Development forum?

My rule before I'll create a new forum:

Find me 10 existing threads (ie in the C++ forum) that could be used to seed a new forum. If you can't even find ten threads (it doesn't matter how old they are) then there isn't enough interest in the topic. If members aren't posting about it within an active forum they sure aren't going to post about it within an inactive forum.

So go off ... find me those 10 threads, and I will be more than happy to use them to populate a new Game Development forum.

Wont be a problem for Mr. Joeprogrammer to drag some of his friends to seed the forums with questions while I myself and the others answer them out. Would that count as 10
