Do a google search on "proper sitting" and you'll find a wealth of advice. Primarily chair height, seat angle, support for feet are the big concerns.
If your doc is not concerned over "shooting pains" I'd get another doc! These could be symptoms of something serious.

Also try those large blue balls (heh,heh I said blueballs) - they are really good for your core strength and will change your posture. Just keep one around (if you have the room) and use it once or twice a day.

You also need to get out of that chair and walk around often to keep your ass from filling out that chain! As the months go by your ass will get broader and broader.
