There are too many holidays and this one we can do without. One doesn't need a holiday to show how much you love someone.

Yes, so very true. (I still really like this Holiday-- it's most of the other major ones I could live without ;) ) Romance seems to have been deleted from our culture (if it was ever here indeed at all :confused:) Valentine's Day, well, gives many the chance to express something they may not other days. I try to give to my love as if everyday was "Valentine's Day"-- not the superficial: gifts, chocolate, but love, care, and respect. Perhaps we should have another holiday just for that. :eek::lol:

Hey, I didn't even know Valentine's day was a holiday! Tells you how much I like the holiday (which is not very much at all). ;)

It's just another overcommercialised thing.
20 years ago it was a time when people sent anonymous cards and gifts to secret loves, now it's a time when men are supposed to flatter their wifes and girlfriends with expensive gifts to show that they do indeed love them.
It's therefore effectively degraded those wifes and girlfriends into paid prostitutes by putting a monetary value on love itself.

I agree with this to an extent, but do not blame such prostitution on Valentine's Day as this happens 365-days a year in many Western marriages. A box of chocolates or a boquet hardly makes a difference when many women (in the States, for example) willingly submit themselves to a man who they have no love for except he makes "a great living!!". :evil:That is prostitution. Wenches. But, then again, look at the wonderful men available...

a box of candy no longer does it it seems... These days it must be a weekend in Paris at the very least, probably with a diamond ring to go with it.
If a man doesn't spend that much on his woman come Valentine's day she thinks he doesn't love her enough...

It seems like the vast majority (87% at the moment) dislike or can live without this holiday. Funny, isn't it?

I think it's become another compulsive commercialized scam. For one, it shouldn't take a holiday to tell someone you love them, nor should it take expensive gifts on said holiday. Two, in many places around the world, Valentine's Day really is nothing more than something advertized by companies interested in making a larger profit; there's no cultural background for it, but people just go along with it to spend money. Three, think of the mental repercussions (traumatic perhaps) on all those poor single guys out there... maybe a class-action lawsuit is in order... :twisted:what day is valentines day again? - the 14th or 16th

I do not actually really believe that most people feel that Valentine's Day is a false-hearted day, a commecrialized event only. Everything practically is commercialized these days so of course this will be to, correct? The real culprit for this case and topic of holidays to avoid is Christmas; I am a Christian and I am bloody disgusted by the American Christmas, honestly.
Valentine's Day gives people the chance to express their love if only for one day and it provides the memory and hopes for love if one is single at the time. This is sad in a way, I know, as love is spread everday for sure, but many people do not feel this way nor know how to exactly do this. Men, especially, are not very romantic as far as I can tell. But I am and it is a lovely holiday for those who dig it. Plus, pink is my favorite color so this Holiday makes me happy because of that and because I have a lovely woman to share this day with. Then again, everyday is Valentine's Day for us.
I like this holiday so much I would vote for it TWICE as the best holiday ever if the thread poll would allow me to.

I agree with everything you say and I like how you say it. I like the holiday but not the pre-packaged crap pawned by every retail store in the nation. Believe me, my girlfriend is not the kind of girl that would swoon over a cheap box of chocolates or tacky jewelry no matter the price. She is an artist and her taste ranges from the beautiful and unique to the eccentic ; she does not expect anything on this day but if I get her anything it should probably be:Retro\ vintage

Well, this year I got her something from the Sanrio store in Manhattan-- we are both Japan-obsessed and collect Hello Kitty\Sanrio objects so I know she will love it. Normally, I just make her stuffed animals from cloth, hand-sewn. We have a huge collection of these (she makes them for me also).
I could rant and criticize so much about American\Western ideals (or lack thereof) concerning romance and love-- but I will not even start here. All I can say... it is sad for both women and men. Literally sad. Overpriced diamonds and American garbage chocolate does not really cut it-- this is not love. Buying her chocolate? At least buy her some from Germany or anywhere in Northern Europe:!:
