Re: Happy 4th july!!!

Well lets see:
It's the day people close up their shops so they can meet can up with their families. They put on flag apparel in cult like fashion, get drunk as ----, declare their love of their country and that they're American, then with the empty bottles they shove some illegal M80s in and blow off the closet child's hand.

Yessiree bob, it's great holiday while we celebrate independence through PTSD. Just like our soldiers did.
LOL! I haven't heard it described in quite so colorful terms, but that does mostly sum it up for a lot of folks. People began to understand patriotism during the first gulf war, but it wasn't personal until September 11th.

We celebrate our freedom as well as all who are free and seek freedom from oppression. (BTW, I believe France celebrates its independence on the same date. Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Happy Birthday U.S.A.

France doesnt have independance from anyone? It, in fact had a large empire of its own. It was never a colony (Unless you include occupation by the Germans as such - in which case D-Day last month would be a better day to celebrate)

Maybe there is something there though, I mean, the Statue of Liberty is French right?

I think we aught to have a national day here though (then again it would probably piss people off)

Anyway, happy July the 4th to all who celebrate it.

Re: Happy 4th july!!!

The French have Quatorze Juillet - July 14th aka Bastille Day. The temperature in Paris is about 105 degs F and is the middle of Tour de France. The only people in town are tourists and the poor retail folk who have to deal with them (and you wonder why the waiter is rude); everyone else is in the south of France. The last time I was there for Quatorze Juillet Jean-michel Jarre set up in Le Grand Arch and played a concert that was broadcast all over Paris and my cousins and I sat around in shorts watching TdF - it was too hot for me.

Happy 4th to all USAians

Re: Happy 4th july!!!

Independence? Freedom? From whom?

Your $40,000 noose around your neck
That's every citizen.

So ma, pa and 2 kids have more national debt than the house they live in is worth (assuming they even own it). Technically, half the population is destitute on the street with nowhere to live, and the other half are not in great shape either.

What a difference a decade makes. Talk about getting it wrong!

I contend that you have an illusion of both the past, and the present.
The future isn't looking so clever either.

Re: Happy 4th july!!!

Well if you don't like it where you live then go live somewhere else where you think you would be happier, such as China, N. Korea, Russia, Iraq, Iran etc. etc. No one is forcing you to live where you are. Sure, its not perfect, but its a lot better than most other places on Earth. And in USA you won't get shot for voicing your opinion. Hell, we'll even let you burn the American flag in public if you want to.

Re: Happy 4th july!!!

National debt is just a fact of life

I mean, we didnt finish paying off 1.5 trillion dollars worth of loans to the USA until 2007!!!!

And we took it out in the period 1940-1955.

Currently our overall national debt is 2.5 trillion pounds (under 5 trillion dollars) but thats between 60 million or so. I aint got a calculator but thats wayyyy more per person than the USAs debt burden is (like double?)

'

Do you mean $60 Million per person?? I looked it up on the net and as of June 2009 it is about $60,000 USD (or about $36,000 pounds)per person in USA.

Re: Happy 4th july!!!

I meant between a population of 60 million

2.5 trillion pounds divided by 6 million people is a few hundred grand per person isnt it?
