why in some web sites WWW is not mentined in the address bar

for eg. in daniweb the address bar contains

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums


but in yahoomail web site it is

http://mail.yahoo.com/

what is the diffrence between this?

plz help!!

The domain is daniweb.com just as it is yahoo.com. SOMETHING.domain.com is a subdomain. Err ... yah.

It is a directory on the daniweb.com domain. Think of domain as a computer, a sub-domain as a public share on that computer, and think of the rest as folders within the share. That is close enough for everyday use.

subdomains cost money usually per subdomain (unless you get a plan that has it prepaid for 5, 10, 15, unlimited, ect), and directories (/techtalkforums) are free.

My hosting company allows me to create them at no charge from my control panel...you can also use your .htaccess file to add subdomains.

this brings up a question of my own:

what is the .htaccess file? i understand that you cannot use this from windows (I have linux). how do I create it, and what do I put into it? do I need a special editor for it?
