trashing a file

Hello, I am a new member to daniweb. I really am aggravated with not being able to delete a file that was downloaded. It has been on my desktop for months and when I try to put it in the trash, it says this task is being used now, try again later. I love my Mac, but when something like this occurs, it drives me crazy. I tried the forums, but when I found someone who had the same problem, I could not get into the answer.

I'm not completely sure, but what type of file is it? If it's a DMG, make sure it's ejected. Likewise, if it's an Application, make sure it's not running (even if there's no application windows open, it can still be open on the Dock). If all else fails:

Open Finder. Open Terminal, which is located in /Applications/Utilities.
Type "rm", followed by a space.
Click on the trash bin. Drag the file onto the Terminal window.
Hit return in the Terminal.
