Which partition is frist XP or 7

If I had Win XP and now installed Windows 7 and have deleted Windows.old (Windows XP) can I resize and put a new partition of Windows XP or does it have to be first in the chain? Will PArtiton Manager allow me to have Windows 7 and then XP or is it the other way?

Remove RunDLL Popup At Profile Startup

Every time I start my computer and get to my profile I am presented with the following popup

This came after I used Malware Bytes so I figured I would start here to see how I stop this pop up from occuring.

I have an old Compaq PIII desktop with MEPIS Linux installed on the original Seagate 9G HD. I've installed a Hitachi 500G HD as slave. The new HD is recognized by the BIOS, and I've performed tests showing it's functional. Utilities within MEPIS Linux recognizes the new drive, but it doesn't show up on the file system consoles. I've used GParteD to create a DOS file system on the new drive.

I want to install Windows 7 on the new drive. My machine won't boot from USB, has only a CDRom drive which can't use the DVD I burned (*.iso) to install the OS. I have a bootable USB 16G thurmb drive with *.iso burned, but I can't figure out how to run it from any terminal or program under Linux. I also can't find the thumbdrive on the file system under Linux.

My question:

How do I install the program on the second (slave) drive and make it bootable? I'll need comprehensive instructions, for I'm not versed well with the Linux OS>

PCI-E x1 Video Card

I have a Dell Inspiron 518 and I am running dual screens with an ATI Radeon 3450 HD.

I am looking to expand to triple, possible quadruple screens. The problem is that the only spots left are 2 PCI-E x1 slots.

I have been looking for an okay, cheap graphics card. It doesn't need to be good for gaming or DVD's or anything, thats what my other card is. I just need this card for coding, email, web browsing, etc.

I am trying to spend less than $40 if I can because I am a cheap high school student. I am having EXTREME trouble finding any of them for a PCI-E x1 for cheap.

My question: Are there any sub-$40 PCI-E x1 graphics cards or should I consider a USB to VGA adapter?

Hi all,

I just got a new laptop with 64-bit Windows 7. I'm trying to use a simple login script that works fine on my XP machine to mount a TrueCrypt volume and share it.

However, when I run RMTSHARE.EXE at a command prompt, it now reports that it can't run "due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows".

Using Windows Explorer, on the Properties sheet for RMTSHAR.EXE, on the Compatibility tab, I set the Compatibility Mode to" Run this program in compatibility mode" for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". When I then execute it, it tells me it's "not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

Does anyone know how I can either get RMTSHARE to run on a 64-bit Windows, or find a copy of it that will?

WoW account hacked due to keylogger

Ok, so, short version, my WoW account was hacked yesterday, and all my stuff was deleted. I uninstalled WoW, ran AVG virus scanner, and Advanced System Care scan, then I came here and ran the scans on the site, malewarebyte came up with 2, the rest negative, I just want to make sure that I'm completely keylogger and other nasty free, here's the results of the scans.

Wireless n dual band

I have a BT home hub (v.2) which is wireless n, I understand that is faster than b/g standards. however im unsure if it is dual band and if so how to set this up so to get the most out of the connection. Im quite aware that the network can only be as fast as the slowest devices connected to it, but am I correct in thinking that if the bthome hub is dual band i can have two seperate bands one for the "N" devices and one for the slower ones.If this is the case how would i go about setting it up as I have logged into the router and cannot find any obvious ways of doing so.

The reason i ask is i have recently purchased a wireless n adapter for my xbox 360 having heard that n is better for streaming ( i have sky player installed on my xbox) however i have not noticed any considerable difference in the streaming from skyplayer. The xbox does show that the it is connected via wireless n, but i would appreciate if someone could give me some clarification on all of the above.

Hi there everybody,
I have got a big problem which I ask you help if possible.
I have an IDE hard drive which is mounted on an enclosure.
For 4 years it has worked the best but now it seems to have many problems as I am not able to use some parts of data on it which is extended day after day. And also I can hardly copy from/onto the disk.
Write delayed message is also shown all the time.
I've got much vital data on it and want to find a solution with the less casualty.
Can anyone suggest suitable cure?

Official list of newly released packages for Fedora

I have been using Fedora Linux for some time now and I love it. I know the there is an official list of packages/applications/software included in each version of Fedora and it is made by the Fedora project people itself. Here is the official (as I understand it) list of packages built into each version of Fedora.

What happened to my 9600GT?

About a month ago, when I turn on the computer the screen was like a broken old TV screen. Broken lines were going all over the screen. I could barely read anything or do any work. Less than an year ago I brought a Nvidia graphic card and it was 9600GT made by a brand called Foxconn.

Before the day that this happened, I used a program called SpeenFan on Windows 7. I changed the fan speed. I don't know what I did....

So I returned the graphic card but the warranty was over. Somehow they agreed to do something so they took the graphic card and they told me that they have to send this to the main company to see what's the problem. So I'm still waiting for it.

Anyway can anyone tell me what happened to the card?
was it caused by SpeedFan a virus?? I Don't have a clue.

chkdsk wont run

Hey guys...I have delayed asking this for too long but maybe its high time.

My UPS faced some problems and it would automatically close down. So, basically windows was shut down improperly. Now, the problem is that my computer wont run chkdsk and thereare lots of damaged files.

I tried the chkdsk /f command and it said that it would run chkdsk on system restart but chkdsk won't run.

Now, how do I repair all those damaged files. Do you guys know how can I run chkdsk?

Gigabyte Motherboard (AMD2 Socket)
SATA DVD Drive.

Problem:

When I boot up the computer, it takes forever to detect IDE devices. Then when it finally does, it sucessfully detects the DVD drive. But gives an

IDE Channel 2:
instead of
IDE Channel 2: None

Which to me indicates that it is not correctly detecting the SATA hard drive which has the OS on it (XP) It then moves to the device list stage, and tries to Update the DMI, and apparently succeeds.

Verifying DMI Pool Data ....................
K8 NPT Data Change...Update new data to DMI! Update Sucess.

It then gives me a Disk Boot Failure.

Measures taken:

Removed DVD Connections, and left only the SATA drive in. Which sucessfully booted Once, then the problem returned.

Booted up with a Ubuntu CD in the DVD tray which is sucessful and used it to test the memory which checked out. Ran Ubuntu for a while off the DVD with no problems.

Changed the boot disk out for a known good one (PATA), connected to the computer which then stops hanging after the DMI issue but goes into a boot loop. When used with a different Motherboard the HDD works fine.

Personal Conclusions:

I do not have a lot of experience in this particular field, but from this I am willing to guess that the issue is on the Motherboard, however I do not have another SATA hard drive to eliminate that possibility.

Search Engine links in Internet Explorer redirecting virus

Hi, I am having a problem with IE. Whenever I use google or any search engine, I am redirected to various websites instead of the ones I linked to. I scanned my computer using AVG and it removed a bunch of trojans. I also used Malware bytes and it removed some other infections, but the false links are still there. I uninstalled IE8 with no change. I installed Mozilla and it doesn't have the link problem so it has something to do with IE. I posted my Hackthis log in hopes someone can see something that I am not.

Virus/Spyware - Can't get rid of

Hi, I had no choice but to register here and get some help as this thing is getting the best of me. Now, I'm a very careful user, rarely download/run any random software and try to get very good care of my laptop. 2 days ago, out of nowhere, it just froze up on me after about 20 min of starting. I hadn't shut it down in a few weeks (been using Hibernate instead) so the system was stable for a while and out of nowhere is freezes. I didn't download/run anything new that day, just my regular stuff (Firefox/Visual Studio/Notepad etc). I had no choice but the force a shut down since nothing was responding. But a little after restarting it froze again. I began to suspect its a HW problem - I decided to get a tool to check my temps - a quick search led me to "Speedfan". Now when I tried to download it - I kept getting redirected to some website which then redirected me to spam. I thought the link is broken so I got a torrent of Speedfan and the core temps were around 60-70C which was high - so while doing some research on this all, of a sudden I get redirected to the same spam website again! Its been happening on both IE and Firefox ever since.
I'm pretty sure this is all caused by some virus - but so far I have been unable to get rid of it.
I've used MB-AV full scan - nothing. My AV - TendMicro Office Scan - nothing. Microsoft's latest "Malware removal tool" - nothing. The computer is still freezing constantly (no crash, just screen freezes and nothing is responsive anymore). I ran HijackThis, nothing seems to be suspicious (see attached).

Sorry for being wordy.. any help?

No copy/paste

I've got a problem with copy-paste that seems more global than any other problems that I've seen reported by others. The ability to paste just suddenly quit working across the board. It doesn't matter whether I do it through command keys (Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V) or from the right-click menu. On the right-click menu 'Paste' is always greyed out. Doesn't matter what application I'm in or what type of data I'm trying to copy/paste (text, images, PrtSc, whatever). I've run a complete scan of my computer and found no threats. I've rebooted a couple times. Nothing fixes it.

Any ideas? Anybody? I never appreciated how much I used copy/paste until it quit working!

News Story Word Injunction Likely Much Ado About Nothing

Yesterday, the Federal Appeals Court ruled in what appears at first blush to be a shocking decision, that Microsoft must stop selling Word 2007 by January 11, 2010. But a closer look at the decision suggests that this isn't as big a deal as it first seems.

Sure, Microsoft has to pay Canadian developer i4i close to $300 million, but that's really chump change for a company that has tens of billions in cash reserves. Microsoft itself has tried to minimize the impact calling the disputed tool, "a little used feature." Regardless, it appears, this has no impact on product already sold and the disputed code has been removed from upcoming Office 2010, leaving Microsoft with little real damage.

Could Have Been Worse

One thing Microsoft did by appealing was buy itself some time to get past the current version of Word and remove the feature in dispute. It could still have a short-term affect on sales, but most people at this point would probably be holding off until Office 2010. Doesn't really make sense to buy Word 2007 in any quantity that would matter to Microsoft with 2010 just around the corner. It remains to be seen if this would affect larger OEM partners like Dell and HP, but Microsoft insists that the delay has bought them enough time to remove the feature from Word 2007, and they will meet the deadline to remove it. If that's the case, Microsoft has had to spend some money, but doesn't really seem to be hurt too badly by all this.

Is It Really as Minor as It Appears?

Microsoft's official statement tries to suggest that the XML editing feature doesn't matter much, and that's true if you're an average user or a consumer running Word at home, but for companies the XML feature in Word 2007 changed the game and allowed enterprise customers to embed code to use Word documents in complex work flows and to communicate and move documents across disparate business systems. For them, the feature matters a lot, but again, since the ruling has no impact on packages already sold, it shouldn't really matter to customers who have been using this product for years and have built connectors to external systems using XML code covered under this decision.

Makes Good Copy

It's hard to point to a single product beyond Windows that would have a huge impact on a company as large and diverse as Microsoft, but Word comes close because it's a tool so many people use on a daily basis. When you see a headline suggesting they have to stop selling it, it makes you stop and think. Main stream press outlets certainly have jumped on this and tried to make it more than it is.

In the end though, while this is probably embarrassing for Microsoft, it appears to be little more than a legal speed bump. Ultimately, there's nothing to see here folks. Let's move along.

Repeated HDD Error Reported by RAID system

I am getting repeated HDD error reported by the RAID systems. I am getting the HDDs replaced via warranty but this is happening too frequently tht I am thinking that something else is wrong. I have had about 5 HHDs failures in the last 4 weeks. As soon as I have rebuild one drive in the RAID 5 set up, the next one fails. It is not always the same port each either.

I have RAID0 with 2 x 1Tb WD drives for the O/S and RAID5 with 4 x 640 Gb WD drives for the data. All drives are SATA II. I use the Intel RAID controller which reports the disk read error and indicates to replace the drive. It is happening for both the RAID0 and RAID5. Could a fault with the motherboard be causing this problem?

Internet explorer starts automatically during startup

hi,

I seem to have a problem with my internet explorer 8. it is starting up automatically when I start my computer. By starting up I mean that as soon as i start up my computer and use the task manager i can see that 2 iexplore.exe processes have been started and if i don't end them they multiply and start giving me DEP problems. and a popup appears that 'this tab has been recovered' in my desktop. However i cannot see any open internet explorer applications in the task manager, neither does it appear in my desktop. thus I think that the processes are running in background.

I have checked the MSCONFIG and regitry settings for startup but iexplore is not listed anywhere, not even in the startup folder. I also did a HijackThis scan and i am posting it here.

Please help me out....

AMD Tutrion vs Intel Core 2 Duo

I am looking to buy a laptop and have zeroed in on these two:

They have everything in common except the processor.

2005ax has AMD Turion™ II M500 2.20GHz 1MB L2 cache

1308tx has ntel® Core™2 Duo T6600 2.20 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB

and the difference in their prices, here in India is Rs. 5000 i.e roughly $100.

I have never used an AMD powered PC. Are their any software or hardware compatibility issues with AMDs? Any reason why I should go with the Intel box?

firstly, would it be better to buy from here itself or buy from UK??
one of my frnd living there suggested me not to buy from uk as they are expensive there. Purchasing from india will be good. Anyone know the price differences??

I have a budget limit of 80K for both laptop and HDD. I would prefer dell and so far This is what i have selected. Its under my budget line and maximum possible config i can get. But i would to have Core I7-820QM Processor instead of Core I7-720QM(the default).But its not letting me customize that. Am i able to get that somehow ??

I was thinking of getting some christmas schemes. But they have none on xps series. Should i wait some more??

If you are expecting a nice shiny iPhone or BlackBerry as a gift this Xmas, your joy may be short lived if network crashes this week are anything to go by.

Earlier this week Twitter users in the UK were reporting data network access as being down for close on two days, with attempts to access apps requiring a data connection being met with an error message simply saying "Could not activate cellular data network."

O2 put the problem down to a fault with the allocation of IP addresses and said sorry to those customer impacted by the issue. However, if you were one of those customers unable to use your iPhone for data access between Saturday and Monday, I doubt that will be much comfort. This is not the first time that the O2 iPhone data network has gone ass over tit, and as before there has been no mention of compensation for users denied access to the service they are paying through the nose for.

BlackBerry users are also feeling the network heat, with US users reporting on Twitter that email access had vanished this week. Research in Motion confirmed yesterday that it was working to rectify the issue, but it has not as yet confirmed what that issue actually is from a technical perspective.

There has been much speculation that problems with mobile data networks are simply down to the sheer number of users. After all, networks were designed primarily to handle voice traffic yet the rise of the smart phone (call it the iPhone effect) has meant that data traffic has exploded and networks just cannot cope.

With smart phones expected to be a big hit this Xmas, do not be surprised if more networks go pear shaped in the weeks to come.

Hi all,

I am writing an application which works in an intermittent internet connectivity environment. Is there someway to detect automatically the internet connectivity state.And to automatically sense changes in the state of connectivity.

I can only think along these lines .. a background service that tries to ping and sleeps if there is no connectivity and invokes my application if there is some connectivity ..

There should be better solutions i guess.

Also, I need this network awareness in windows system. A OS-agnostic solution is great as well , but i atleast need it in Windows .

Wireless network connection died for no reason

Hi there,

I have a very strange problem. Two days ago my internet connection died for no apparent reason and my laptop cannot detect it anymore. I tried to release/renew the IP but it didn't work. I also reinstalled the wireless card drivers and changed the MAC address, no luck. I then restored my system using System Restore to the day before my internet stopped working, again, no luck.

The strange thing is that I can connect to other networks but not my own. Also, I could connect to my own network using my phone, so I know that the internet works fine. My network is hidden and it is manually set up as a preferred network on my laptop and so far I haven't had any problems (about 10 months now). Now it looks like my network doesn't exist. Can anybody please help?

I haven't installed any new software/updates and my antivirus scan didn't find any viruses or malware on the computer.

I'll be grateful if anybody could help me in any way. Thanks in advance.

Computer hangs from time to time

Hi

I am having this problems since around 5-6 days. My computer gets hang, mouse pointer gets lost (invisible), and key strokes work after a lag of 1 sec to 3-4 secs. After a few seconds (say from 3 secs to 10-12 secs), it will automatically get to normal state, like nothing weird has ever happened.

This mostly happens when I am playing AOE II, (Age of Empires TC, a game released in 2000 does not need much resources of computer, runs on 128 RAM). Then this also happens (with lesser frequency) while I use Google Chrome or Firefox. (I seldom use IE).

Also sometimes keyboard will work and I can see mouse pointer but cant move mouse pointer. This has happened only 3 times, and everytime i needed restart to fix it. (the problem above this has occured like atleast 30-40 times)

I downloaded and tried to fix it with CCleaner, though it freed up some space, but did not help me in getting rid of the problem.

Following are the config and settings of my computer.

windows xp pro, version 2002, SP2
computer: Intel P4, 2.40 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Gigabyte mother board, intel chipset 845.
pretty old but this is what I have.

I have uninstalled my antivirus -claimwin or something- 2 days ago, which anyways did not seem to do any work, in attempt to free up the load. So I have no antivirus installed as of now, but I never download trojans or virus from internet or pendrives.( I only use the computer so there is no risk that someone else could download; I use cmd prompt to delete virus from pendrives if any). I have my windows firewalled on, with few exceptions added like AOE, and few port forwarded like 2300-2400 and 47624. I dont know if this could get me in any kind of problems but mentioning just in case.

PS: Computer hanged four times while writing this post (in 10-15 mins). (Opened appication: MS word , Chrome -only this tab- , and google talk).

Unhide hidden activated administrator account in vista

Hello,

I'm using a Dell studio 1555 laptop... I have gotten myself into trouble here...

I activated and unhide the real vista 'Administrator' account using the command 'net user administrator /active:yes' in cmd and i put password to it. All was good till this point.

Then for some reason I made the Administrator account disappear from the vista welcome/login page using 'regedit' and creating new keys namely SpecialAccounts and UserList and putting a Dword value of '0' to the Administrator account. It did serve my purpose but I ended up with a big problem... Now I cant access my Administrator account (cltr+Alt+Del doesnt work) and cant install anything using my other user accounts (all standard ones) because UAC asks for administrator password but doesnt show the field to enter any password (because Administrator is hidden).

I've tried everything i can think of to undo the disaster. I cant open 'regedit' anymore and cant open cmd or netplwiz either as Administrator to make any changes. A friend advised to do this in safe mode but no luck yet.

I dont know what to do now. Please help somebody. If somehow I could access/login to my hidded Administrator account using something like cltr alt del at startup i think i cud fix it up.

Occasionally, when I boot up windows, it doesn't detect my USB mouse. All I have to do is unplug and then replug the mouse and it works again but it's pretty annoying and I want to find out what exactly the problem is. Its not like mouse input is not detected... the USB just doesn't send power to the mouse. The red light inside the mouse doesn't show up.

Ubuntu 9.10 VLC no playing DVDs

I have VLC running on my laptop which does happily plays CDs and movies on the local disk. However I'm not able to play DVDs.

In the Preferences under Input & Codecs Settings where default disk device can be set I'm getting 2 question marks in diamond shape and the browse button next to text field doesn't respond. I have distinct feeling that Ubuntu is not picking my DVD driver correctly and misplacing it with CD drive.

Suggestion how to solve this issue?

2Wire USB Network Adapter Not Working With Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 on a seperate drive, and everything works fine, but I can't get the above network adapter to work properly. It's displayed in Device Manager as a USB device, and I have the driver that makes it function in Vista, but when I run the Driver Wizard and direct it to directory where I have the Vista driver, it almost immediately says "Can't install driver." It works fine in Vista, though.

Is there any work around to this?

I have a virus that doesnt allow me to access the internet, start any programs (gives me a windows security alert and says the application cannot be executed) and wants me to activate its antivirus software. It gives me a antivirus software alert that blocks my taskbar and says "Infiltration alert" Your computer is being attacked by an internet virus.............. I cannot start the computer in safe mode because it just shuts off and restarts in normal mode. I cannnot get onto the internet on that computer. I was able to stop it for a while and download ESET NOD32 which finds a few infiltrations. It is really slow doing it's scan and if and when I reboot it does it again. I am on a different computer and do not think I can post a logfile from that computer. I have read some other threads and it looks the same as the winbluesoft virus.

Network printer Canon IR3300 stops working frequently

Hi Experts

I have got a client who has a Canon IR3300 network printer shared on a server 2003 (AD environment)

I shared the printer (it has a static ip address 192.168.0.126)

There are 7 client (means 7 workstations windows XP SP3 ) , all of them can print (yes they can print without any problem) without any problem.

All of the sudden next day when they try to print a message pops up (I can not recall an exact phrase for the message) that printer cannot print check printer driver or connectivity or a printer is powder on ,,,,I forgot what the exact word of the error message

What I use to do, if I ask the user to log off and log on again or restart a PC he/she can print …….I do not why !!!!!

I disabled a firewall on all PCs (although firewall has configured for File and Printer Sharing Exception).

When the printer does not print still I can ping the printer and display web page of the printer by from all workstations http://192.168.0.126

Services > Printer Spooler is running automatically

When a domain user can not print and if I check the printer properties ( right click )

Printer properties cannot be displayed. The print spooler service is not running

But if a user domain can printer then there is no such an error message as above

What type of troubleshot should I carry out to solve this issue ?

I have been in this situation for 2 weeks and it is really embarrassing every day I receive a call the printer is not working.

I've got a SyncMaster 932BW that is jittery, and then blinks to black, and then back on. This saga started when all of a sudden, horizontal squiggly lines appeared on my display. I rebooted, and then I came up with a few sets of 5, or so, red vertical lines. Again I rebooted, and low and behold, my screen resolution went from 1280 x 768 to about 800 x 600. This made me believe that my GeForce 8800 was about to die, so I went out and bought a Geforce 210. Now the screen has a horizontal jitter, and then goes to black at random times, sometimes only once and sometimes about 5 times in 30 seconds. I'm at a loss at what to try next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry but I'm new here and am not very sure if this is the place to ask this. But my problem is that internet works perfectly fine for my laptop but once my sister starts hers, internet frequently shows DNS error and cannot be used. I have tried ipconfig/flushdns and have even gotten an IT guy over to check the network so i know its not a router problem. Hi

There's this virus on my computer that won't let me acces Internet explorer or Firefox (My 2 only ways of browsing the web).

Also won't let me run a virus scan or play any programs(When I do it ends up in a Blue Screen).

Note: 1. I cannot download anything.
2. I am NOT using the infected computer right now.
3. My Antivirus cannot run a scan but can still block viruses.
4. Before I run a program or try to access the net (using firefox, When i use internet explorer it doesn't say anything and just doesn't let me.) a notification pops out and says:
"System32/16.exe.exe requested to terminate the program in an unusual way" and goes to the blue screen..
5. BEFORE all this happened the computer changed it's theme and i can't restore it.
6. I don't know if this is a work of the virus, but my sound stopped working after another crash.

Please help with this HUGE problem.

No Sound with Windows 7

I have recently installed Windows 7 (ultimate, 64 bit), on a Medion Titanium MD 8385PC desktop making it dual boot with Windows xp. Now when I log on using xp I still have sound but not when I log on using Windows 7. The onboard soundcard is a "C-Media AZA AZ 97".
Windows 7 gives me an error message that "NoAudio Output Device is installed." Whenever I try troubleshooting I first get the message that, "High Definition Audio Device has a driver problem" and then, "Not fixed".
When I ran Windows 7 upgrade adviser it specifically said, "This device is compatible with Windows 7" next to "Devices... C Media High Definition Audio Device." This was all under the heading, "Information about upgrading to 64-bit Windows 7."
Today I have installed a cheap Yamaha PCI soundcard but that didn't help either. I still only get sound when I log on using Windows xp.
I would really appreciate any help on this one as I have spent many days and lots of hours so far without success.

Blue Screen at XP startup

Getting some problems....This problem occurred one day when I tried to start my computer up. Everything runs normally until I reach the windows logo and beings to load. The screen never loads and instantly turns into blue screen of death for a second and then the computer restarts and it repeats its self over and over. I tried to run in safemode but was unable. It restarts before i can enter safe mode. I opened bios and directed the boot sequence to read from the disc. I enter my XP cd and being the process of reformatting. I get to the point where I accept the terms of service and then It tells me to insert the XP CD. I already have the cd in the rom so I open and close it to get it to read the disc. It then tells me "Setup could not read the CD you inserted or the cd is not a valid windows cd". I have looked online and a few forums say that i need a legit copy of windows on my pc or a different copy of windows cd for it to "upgrade".

I had a problem a few months ago in october with the Windows Police Pro rouge anti virus. In october I had reformatted my PC using this exact same disc to fix this problem. Everything worked great and then one day in November this blue screen of death problem started occurring. I havent gotten around to try fixing it until my school was over. How can I fix this. Might it be a problem with my CD rom? I have a spare should i try switching it out to get it to work?

I started making a game in XNA and I've also been making a parallel version in Java so that it can run on computers(I know XNA makes PC games but I hear it's primarily a Xbox API...hopefully I haven't gone off topic in the linux forums).

Overall I prefer C# over Java, I suppose it's kind of a petty issue and there are two sides to this but I hate the fact that I can't overload the math operators for the purposes of vector math.

Because of this I was thinking I of using mono but I've heard that despite the promises of Mono it's kind of a second class platform when compared to .NET.

Gateway Laptop Won't Boot

I have a Gateway MX6426 Laptop. When you push the power button, the power light comes on, you can hear what sound like the hd heads moving, but the only thing that happens is the left hand light on the mouse pad comes on solid and the 4th light form the left on the mouse pad starts flashing, 10 or 12 times and the the 2nd and 3 light from the left on the mouse pad both flash and everything starts over again. The fan will come on after the machine has been on for a while.
I have reset the memory, pulled the HD and tried to boot, put a bootable CD in drive, reset the battery, pulled the battery and booted on externial power, but nothing changes.
Any ideas or suggestions?

This is what happened. My computer became infected with a nasty virus so i tried to boot up in safe mode using F8. However I got a blue screen with an error message that said:

Every attempt to boot up in safe mode brought me to this screen. I then tried booting in safe mode through msconfig. I still received the blue screen error message. However now I receive it no matter how I start windows. Specifically when I try to boot up I am brought to a black screen with the message stating:

I tried using last known good configuration as well as booting up normally but ever since I tried booting in safe mode with msconfig everything brings me to the blue screen error message. My best guess is that windows is now stuck in trying to boot up in safe mode but thats based solely on the course of events. I don't have a windows disk, only Microsoft Windows Recovery Console installed. I'm in much need of help and any insight would be very appreciated.

Wireless USB device stops working

Alright. This belongs from the 'other peripherals" part.

I have a Netgear WG111v2 wireless USB adapter connected to my tower. Now, my tower's motherboard is kinda old; it doesn't have a single PCI-e slot, and it has USB 1.0....that's right, no modern USB ports! And the modern ports don't get enough juice from it to run properly.

So, I'm happily playing games, online since it was meant for that, and it just stops working. It gets really hot and my computer needs to be rebooted for it to work; the device is still hot, but the internet continues merrily for another hour or two! So I'm doubting it's heat.

But, I played games offline then decided to go online. No go.

What might be the problem?

i have noticed that the cpu (as found in task manager) spends more time riding at 100% than it spends below 50% when i am listening to any audio and doing research online. i tend to do a fair bit of research online, and if i am listening to music or talk radio, it is through my pc. i added an extra 30 GB hard drive and CD RW (both came out of another HP pavillion of the same era which is where i got the extra 64 MB ram) to accommodate my music habit:). the sound card is integrated into the dial-up modem, which died on me a couple years ago. i did find some evidence of overheating near where the phone line plugs into the modem, but the audio was fine until about a week ago, when it quit in the middle of a live radio show i was listening to. i took it out, inspected it for further heat damage, cleaned out the dust (which i try to do regularly) and put it back in. after that, i could get 'winamp' to play, but no system sounds, no volume control, and the device manager did not even recognize that there was an audio device connected to my machine. in trying to get the device manager to see the audio card, i crashed the system, and had to wipe my primary hard drive. (luckily, i had already backed up my music and files) i re-installed xp, and now it just bogs down, but will (grudgingly) play the audio files i ask it to.

now that you have my machine's history, my question is:
can my cpu or ram or both be upgraded enough to handle all the work i ask it to do (with a better sound card) plus run a PCI USB 2.0 so i can back up to an external hard drive, or should i just make it into a 'NAS' and get a faster machine?
there is now high speed ethernet here, so i no longer need the fried modem, but it is still in the machine. any suggestions would be helpful, since i have balked at spending even $100 on another machine, but have been getting very frustrated with the browser freezing up just because i want to listen to the radio :(

How to Update Vista when Internet doesn't work

A friend of mine has a Acer L5100 running Vista. During the loading of Update 955430 (which is a pre-requisite for SP1) the update failed as did the update for SP1. At some point after - i.e. a couple of months - another update has caused internet to stop working (the machine will not connect other than "Local Access only").

There are no restore points back before the failed updates. Removing SP1 was possible but did not solve the internet problem. I can't download 955430 to run it again because the machine won't connect and I can't download it using this machine because it just wants to install it. You can't remove 955430 either.

So how do you get an update from Microsoft when you have no internet connection?

What's really interesting to me is that people still talk about the speed rather than what it can do when they're announcing these services. It's possibly the single least useful thing network providers actually do.

According to my ISM I have an 8 meg service. No laughing at the back. The thing is, it does me perfectly well. I can watch videos on YouTube, listen to the radio live, I get email coming in at real time speed thanks to SMPT. You know the routine. I could, apparently, get 50 megs by going to another ISP and apparently by 2013 I'll have 100 megs. But do you see the way the latter examples are just numbers? No marketer ever tells you the big secret: they're going to improve the speed because they can (and undoubtedly a load of bottlenecking will go away) but actually the broadband people have already got is likely to be fine for most purposes.

I have no doubt other purposes will emerge. If you'd told me in 1999 that music would eventually account for a load of domestic broadband I'd have been puzzled, but that's common knowledge by now. But just for once, I wish someone would tell me why I need the next big thing rather than how fast it's going to be.

Monitor giving no signal

Okay, I've read through several of the threads around here detailing "No Signal" problems with their monitors, and I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with my monitor at this point.

My monitor has infrequently given me trouble with not picking up a signal from my computer, but in the past the problem has passed with a simple resecuring of the cable. As it stands now, my monitor will run for a few minutes, even as long as an hour, then will lose signal. While I was using it tonight, I made sure to be running a program with audio and when the monitor lost signal, the audio slowed and eventually stopped altogether. The fans continued to run in the case, so I find myself wondering what this particular problem could be and how I can troubleshoot it.

I have tried the monitor with another computer, but I have not tried the computer with another monitor yet and I haven't tinkered with any of the internal hardware at all.

Any and all speculation about where my problem could be coming from would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Vista Recovery Problem

Hi,
a customer of mine has an HP Pavilion 9500 with Windows Vista as a pre installation. She did not make Recovery DVDs. The computer crashed.

I deleted the folder $tfxlog and the blue screen vanished, but now the laptop is booting into a black screen.

I tried to use Recovery DVDs of HP 6820, this didn't work. I tried to use a Windows Recovery DVD to check for errors, which says it is repairing the hard disk, but actually the action lids are off no activity, even if you let it work for 24 hours.

I tried to connect the hard disk to another computer to transfer files and check the hard disk using chkdsk, but there is only one partition shown with no files on it. All partitions are probably hidden.

What to do? Is there a way to display the partitions anyway?

I'd appreciate any help.

Get ready to see the biggest increase in Linux adoption in history. You can say you saw it here first. These are in no particular ranking or order.

1. Cloud Computing - You're going to hear a lot about cloud computing in 2010. You'll hear a lot more about it beyond 2010 too. In fact, I've likened the term cloud computing to the term "trans fat" as the next most overused term that has no meaning for the people using it. Almost no one knows what's really meant by trans fat and, likewise, cloud computing has a good sound to it but media dorks won't know what it is.
Linux-based cloud computing is going to soar in the next couple of years, starting in 2010. Watch for it. Invest in it. It's here to stay.

Watch: IBM, HP, RackSpace, Amazon.

2. Virtualization - Linux-based hypervisors and non-hypervisor Linux-based virtualization will take the day. Virtualization on a large scale is cloud computing but on a more 'local' scale it is a money-saving technology that has much to offer those who adopt it. Hardware is more fully utilized by requiring fewer physical machines on which to run workloads. Utilization increases for the few pieces of hardware that take up valuable rack space.
Linux-based virtualization has the most to gain from the down economy because of its no cost licensing and lower hardware requirements. Lower entry costs means more companies can leverage it for their business infrastructure.

Watch: VMware, Citrix, Parallels, Red Hat.

3. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) - Ah, VDI, the most controversial topic du jour. There are those who sing its praises and paste their lame hopes on it but there are those of us who take a more realistic view of VDI: Another transitional technology that will never pay off or pay for itself. Sorry, I am not a fan.
Those who spend money on this high-priced technology will find that they've wasted time and a lot of money on it with little to show but frustrated users and unhappy technical folk who must support it.

Watch: Cisco/VMware, Citrix, Virtual Bridges, Red Hat.

4. Gadgets - Linux-based gadgets will make an incredible surge this year. More manufacturers will turn to Linux for eeking out more profit and less hassle for their customer service and call centers. I just hope that they're careful when they do. The Software Freedom Law Center brought suit against 14 companies that didn't supply their source code with their BusyBox-based gadgets.

Watch: Astak, TomTom, Chumby

5. Smart Phones - With the newest Android and Chrome operating systems, phones now have a chance for some real innovation. The worldwide open source communities will have a chance to develop at will. In a year, you'll see thousands of new phone applications for everything from banking to remote system support to babysitting. Put 1,000 developers in a room with 1,000 phones and you get smart phone loaded with Linux-based operating systems and zillions of applications to make life more fun and a little more geeky.

6. Desktops - I know I said that there is no "Year of the Linux Desktop" but the economy dictates what people will buy and they won't buy a $200-$300 operating system when there's a free one waiting for them. 2010 might not be a landslide victory for the Linux desktop but will certainly find a home on a lot of desktop computers from standard desktops to laptops to netbooks to those pesky virtual desktops about which I complain so fervently.

Watch: Acer, Dell, HP.

7. Appliances - No, not refrigerators, stoves and toasters--although that could happen--I'm talking about Linux-based network appliances. From routers and switches to firewalls and load balancers to searchable index appliances. Linux makes creating a network appliance simple and inexpensive. From home networks to data centers to city-wide WiFi, it's all Linux-based goodness.

Watch: Linksys, Netgear, Dlink, Kickfire.

8. Storage - LAN-connected storage will replace traditional file servers due to lower maintenance and lower overhead. Traditional file servers are so last century. You only need a minimal operating system for such services and a web-based management interface for setup and user/group maintenance. Linux delivers the lowest cost and the highest performance for such services.

Watch: Aberdeen, ISS, DNF.

9. Automobiles - It might sound crazy but I think you'll see that next year will bring new automotive innovations and Linux will deliver those innovations to a brave new world of drivers. From GPS technology to central computing units (car brains) to automobile design, Linux will see a huge surge in use for those technologies. I think you'll also see some new car companies emerge from the need for more efficient transportation and no doubt the brains they put in those new cars will have something to do with Linux.

Watch: GM, Ford, Toyota.

10. Science - The scientific world has always faced stressed budgets, negative politicians and dwindling public confidence. Linux can help offset those ever-shrinking research budgets. Large laboratories such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory has used Linux in supercomputing clusters for years. Those clusters built from recycled computers saved the laboratory millions of dollars in the computing horsepower required for its projects.

Watch: LANL, CentOS, Scientific Linux.

These are the ten Linux-related technology areas to watch for the coming year. We'll see at this time next year how many came to pass. My guess is that most, if not all, will. As the world pulls out of this economic dive, Linux will provide the much needed technology life jacket we need to get our finances back on track.

After loading is completed, select a link with Google.com as its link (This is found under the link, after information). This will automatically take you to the Chrome website, then you may select download. A window shall automatically appear and you may click save, and from then on you're chrome will be installed. :)

It says Diagnose Connection problem, and when i click on that tab, dialogue box says "Change the proxy setting." Well i can open fire fox and Mozilla, where i can use the internet but some of my pages and software couldn't recognize the connection to internet like safari page, internet explorer page and messenger etc. Few weeks ago we changed the router and after that we got this problem. I call to to company also they said to turn off the firewall setting which blocking to access, i did, but that's not by the firewall and they said it's not by them call to Sony. Ughhhh I'm tired how do i get rid of this problem? If somebody help me out, will appreciate.

I write a lot of about the battle among large technology corporations in this space and the importance of competitive checks and balances. Yet Comcast seems to be growing into a super power with control over the very pipes that provide many of us with internet access, but without any real competition and often with government support.

Most places in this country get internet access through one or at most two providers. That kind of concentration of power is increasingly a threat to the very foundation of business and society, as so many of us use the internet on one level or another to do our jobs, get our information and connect to one another.

Low Competition and Not forced to Share Pipes

Unlike the phone companies, which years ago were forced to share their copper wires with competitors who offer cheaper service, the US Supreme Court ruled years ago that cable companies did not share the same obligation; which is a puzzling decision when you think about it. If phone companies have to share their wires, why don't the cable providers? In fact, when that decision was made back in 2005, most cable companies didn't offer phone service. They now do, yet they are still not required by regulators to behave in the same fashion as the phone companies. The only difference here mind you is the type of wire.

Perhaps the only real difference is Comcast's power base and the millions it's spending in Washington to ensure that it isn't forced to play by the same rules. We know from experience that as technology advances, it's not unusual for government regulation to be slow to catch up, but we are far enough along the path at this point, and the lines between these types of services have become sufficiently blurred, that it makes little sense not to even the playing field and force competition.

Comcast's Big and It's Getting Bigger

Just recently Comcast bought NBC Universal, which means as we move forward (assuming the deal is approved, and there's little reason to believe it won't), that Comcast will not only own the cable, but they'll be producing their own content as well. Some have suggested that this deal is similar to the Time Warner/AOL deal that proved to be a huge failure, but AOL was a company in decline at the purchase time. Comcast and NBCU are healthy companies.

While it's always possible that cultural clashes and poor implementation could eventually torpedo the deal, for now, it leaves Comcast in an extremely powerful position controlling both content creation and the distribution system that both it and its content production competitors must use. Not exactly a recipe for competitive pressure and all of the positive results that competition brings.

Let's Build Our Own

One way out of this, is to create municipal internet access, an idea that was bandied about quite frequently before our economic meltdown. A story in this week's Valley Advocate, an alternative weekly newspaper that publishes in western Massachusetts, applauds an effort by my hometown of Amherst, MA to create its own small wireless network within the confines of its cozy downtown. The network, a product of a partnership between UMass Amherst and the town, with the help of some hefty grants, provides a snapshot of how we could create these types of systems independent of the larger providers like Comcast.

In tough economic times, it's hard to put the burden for such systems onto cities and towns already struggling to cover existing costs, but the economy will rebound eventually, and when it does, having wireless networks on the long-term plan will help push these ideas forward and perhaps begin to chip away at the alarmingly growing power of companies like Comcast to control our access to the internet.

I know my PC is infected, Norton doesn't! Help Please!

Greetings. Looking for some help with my Vista based laptop.

I have steered clear of Limewire, etc. and been very careful about what I download and install on my HP laptop, but the other day I had a blue screen pop up suddenly with a scary and long error message. Then my laptop shut down and I was unable to take note of any of the details of the message.

NOW, browsers (even Chrome & Firefox) are slow, java based websites and applications often crash, and my overall performance is much slower. I've noticed my cursor often jumps from the arrow to the circular blue "thinking/loading" circle (what used to be the hourglass) even when no programs are open.

I'm not sure how a virus has infected my PC, but somehow it has! Norton doesn't detect it, AVG free didn't detect anything. I tried Norton again, and still nothing detected. What has happened to my PC and what can I do to discover/fix it?

I would be eternally grateful for any feedback.

Google redirects + Crashes

Hi folks.

My computer got infected with something nasty at the end of last week, leading to frequent crashes, my firewall getting disabled, and some odd browser behavior. I updated my antivirus, changed my firewall to Zone Alarm from the Windows firewall, and installed Malwarebytes. This turned up some nasty malware/viruses, which I got rid of.

But it didn't get everything, I guess. The current symptoms are these: I get an occasional alert from my antivirus about 'bo:heap' being detected and blocked; my browser (I've used both IE & Firefox) frequently locks up (mostly IE) or causes the whole computer to freeze (mostly Firefox); and when I use google for searches using IE, the search proceeds normally, but I get redirected when I click on one of the results. I also notice an odd icon in the upper left-hand corner of the results screen.
