I have problems with ubuntu 9.04

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Comapq presarion v4000. it was running smooth and it was my first time to use it. until i down loaded the partial upgrade when the download is over i could not restart my notebook i have tried to get help but could not.
the screen is black with a long list the first saying.
Satatus: Unkown job: usplash.
mounting local filesystems (OK)
activating swapfile swab (ok)
then two lines of : satatus unkown job:
Starting AppArmor .......
Mounting securitysfs on /sys/ kernel/ security (Ok )
few lines of the same fist line Satuts unknown job: usplash
Configuring network interfaces ( fail )another 8 lines of
Satus : Unknown job: usplash
the last line .
init: rc-default main process (1276) tewrminated with status 127.
I have some data don,t want to loose .
I am very new to this OS.
I appricated very much if any one can help me with this problem.

NetBSD install and display issues

I tried an install of netbsd 5.0 on an acer veriton m261,intel celeron 430/1.8ghz,chipset sis672,ddr2 sdram 512Mb. The dmesg text scrolls to the point where it displays the drive types then gets fuzzy and unclear with vertical green and white lines. What am I doing wrong?

1. Download Virtual PC 2007 - Virtual PC 2007 allows you to install various operating systems as virtual machines and run them simultaneously with Windows. No rebooting required. Download this free application from Microsoft, install it and then proceed to Step 2.

2. Download Ubuntu 9.10 - Everyone agrees that Ubuntu Linux is the great Windows contender, especially for those who are new to Linux. Go to the Ubuntu Downloads page to download your free copy. The download is large (~600MB) so it might take a while, so be patient.

3. Create a New Virtual Machine - To install Ubuntu Linux, you'll need to setup a new virtual machine (VM) for it. This is just like building a PC on which to install a new operating system except that the hardware is virtual.
Open Virtual PC, click the New button, click Next, Create a Virtual Machine, name the new VM something like Ubuntu and click Next, select Other for operating system, click Next, Adjusting the RAM, change the 128 to 256 and click Next, A new virtual hard disk, click Next, change 16384 to 4000 (Hopefully you have 4GB free space--if not, change the location to a drive where you do), click Next to finish. You should see your new Ubuntu VM listed in the Virtual PC console.

4. Boot the ISO Image - The file that you downloaded in Step 2 is delivered to you as an ISO image, which means that it is an entire CD image in a single file. You do not have to burn the image to CD disk and boot from it. You can boot directly from the ISO image file.
With Virtual PC still open, click Start. A black box opens. This is your VM booting up. While the screen is still black, click CD on the menu bar, click Capture ISO image, browse to the Ubuntu ISO image that you downloaded in Step 2, select it, and click Open. Your VM will now boot to the ISO image.

5. Install - Ubuntu installation is easy. Press the ENTER key to begin. Follow the prompts to install your new system. If you come across something you don't understand, just accept the default value and click Forward to continue. When Ubuntu is finished installing to the new VM, there is a prompt to restart, click Restart. This will reboot your VM and bring it up to the desktop or the desktop login. If you are presented with a login prompt, type in the username and password you used during installation.

Congratulations, you just installed Ubuntu Linux into a virtual machine! What you have in that VM is a fully-functional desktop operating system that compares favorably to Windows. Go ahead, give it a try.
You'll find that it works almost exactly like Windows and is loaded with all kinds of software. You don't have to pay for Ubuntu or any of the programs that you use.

Hi all,
I need to install apps in my USB Mandriva 2010.
In office I have to install Elite Core's SSCyberoam client which is Windows vista exe. I cannot access net without it so I need wine to install it.

All versions of wine at official download fails and also cannot access repo (Can't go to net without SSC remember?) So Is there a wine distribution full packaged with all dependencies?

What other trick can do aJob to install SSC (.exe)

Hi out there, can anyone help an old man??.
I've recently bought an ASUS notebook with xp installed on the "C" drive. I can access the internet with no problems.
I then installed "Ubuntu" on the "D" drive. This works well, but I cannot access the Internet. I have gone to System/Administration/Network Connections/Wireless/Add, and I need to find the information to access the net, i.e "Setup details and"Key".

The following packages failed to install :

I couldn't find any of these packages in the x64_86 or i386 DVD.
i686 version of the above packages are already installed, but I still get the error while installation.

Whether you call it a desktop manager, a window manager, an XGUI or user interface; what do you think it needs to be successfully adopted for regular users instead of Mac OS or Windows? Before you answer, assume that the end user is a non-technical person who just wants to turn on the computer and become productive right away.

Think in terms of applications, installing new applications, help files, updating, patching, malware prevention and customizing the desktop look and feel.

When you choose from all of the available window managers and desktops, what do you look for?

Personally, I'd like a system that is lightweight and fast like XFCE or LXDE but with the stability of GNOME, plus the KDE and GNOME libraries so that I can install any app available at any time. I'd like a smart system that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) into the desktop by learning the way I work and responding to those subtle and individual differences.
In fact, a system that incorporates AI into the core of the operating system is a good idea and one that's long overdue. If a car's internal computer can learn the way I drive and respond to that, then surely we should create a computer that does that for users. But these are just my thoughts on the subject.

Write back and tell me what you think the Linux user interface needs to make it compete more effectively against the competition.

What do you get if you combine a computer company with a group of Vegans and someone who used to present a popular children's TV show? The less than obvious answer is a Linux computer designed especially for old people.

But there you have it, and according to the press release that sits before me the awfully named simplicITy computer (what's wrong with OAPC I ask you) that is designed specifically to meet the needs of users aged 50 plus, has come about courtesy of a collaboration between a money saving website co-founded by ex Blue Peter presenter Valerie Singleton, a group called Vegan Solutions and a company by the name of Wessex Computers.

The real question I find myself asking is why? Why build a PC just for older people, and why assume that older people are either technophobic or somehow incapable of using a bog standard PC running Linux, Windows or even a Mac for that matter?

"For some time now, we have been aware of the need among older people for a simpler type of computer" Valerie Singleton says, continuing "a large number of 50 pluses only require: email, internet, a writing package, perhaps a means of storing or viewing pictures and a facility to chat. We don’t need the bells and whistles that modern computers offer, we just need something that’s simple to use and reliable".

So buy a netbook then.

The press release gets even odder, insisting that if you walk into any computer store you discover that even a basic computer comes with "a bewildering array of packages and programmes" as if this is a problem. Surely that's called getting value for money, right? How many consumers would buy a PC which comes with just the OS and diddly squat else if it cost the same as a PC which comes with a bunch of productivity and leisure applications thrown in for free?

But that's not the only problem, apparently. Nope, the user interface is not ideal either I am assured, and as a result "potential mature computer users are being ‘turned off’ from using email and the Internet".

So buy a netbook running Linux then, assuming you can still find one that is.

Nigel Houghton, Managing Director of discount-age which is marketing the OAPC (I'm using my name as it is less bewildering and confusing than simplicITy) argues that for "many 50-pluses, using a computer has become complicated and frightening" and the OAPC makes "getting online and staying in touch painless, easy and affordable".

What's the secret of this incredible computer for the apparently easily confused over 50 age group then? The use of a basic menu planted on top of a Linux distro called Mint. This shows just six big options to choose from: Email, Browse the web, Chat, About me, Documents and Video tutorials.

Big buttons with big text and a page called Square One so if the user gets too confused they can always go straight back to square one. To aid the anti-confusion, the video tutorial button explains the main functions "slowly and logically" and can be "played again and again".

Don't get me wrong, I applaud any attempt to get more people into computing in this increasingly IT communications dependent age. I don't have anything against using Linux either. But is it just me who finds this whole approach a little, well, overly patronising?

It has far too much of the speak loudly and slowly about it, after all the poor old duffers will never understand otherwise right? I'm sure the team involved has done its research, but a quick poll over the last few days of relatives and acquaintances over the age of 50 makes me think it might have missed the mark, by a country mile.

Most of the people I spoke to were as old as Ivy Bean although most were as computer savvy and all were rather offended by the idea of being treated as incapable of using a PC just on age grounds. While more than half of these people already owned a computer and were amazingly managing to cope with using it quite well thanks very much, the remainder were split up between those who had no interest at all and 20% who popped into the library and used a PC there when they needed to. Of that group, a number said they would be buying a laptop soon so I explained more about the OAPC.

Guess what the main concern was? Yep, that the computer would not be the same as the ones in the library, which they already knew how to use. And those library PCs were running Windows, of course.

I admit that I am not in the over 50 age group myself, so I'd be particularly interested in reading the opinions of those who are. Is the Linux OAPC a hit or miss?

Sharing files and folders from external drive on Ubuntu

Hello i have ubuntu . I can rightclick on any folder and share it and i am able to view them from my windows xp machine and another linux machine at home. but when i try to share stuff from the a second HardDrive from the said ubuntu machine , well everything works fine clicking wise
it says the folder is being shared. and i have clicked that guests can connect as well. but when i go to the other machines i cannot access the files. i can view them. like the most hierarchical folder. but it says i do not have privileges and need to contact my system administrator.

OS is Ubuntu Hardy, Kernel 2.6.24-25-virtual, VMware tools the last version, the host machine is a VMware ESX 4 with processors Intel (R) Xeon (R) CPU E5405@2.00GHz. For my virtual machine are allocated 256MB of RAM, restricted to use up to 450 Mhz processor during a Xeon and I have a 100Mbit-flat channel to the Internet. My problem is the following when I decide to test the performance of Apacha and from my laptop run ab-c 10-n 100 http://mysite.com/ or ab-c 20-n 20 in http://mysite.com/ get console response:

Load of my server is just over 20, CPU-it is almost 100 percent all the time. top show about memory following thing:

In the first 20-21 lines shows apache2. I watched the top around, 40 minutes, values remain almost unchanged. Execute /etc/init.d/apache2 stop waiting 4-5 min but nothing happen. For that reason execute killall -9 apache2 and loading the machine decrease.

My question is what is the reason for this overload of apache.I guess something fundamentally wrong.

Here is what I changed from the default settings. In /etc/apache2/apache2.conf:

Mandriva Running on USB HDD - persistent

I have downloaded Mandriva One 2010. I have Windows Vista and one 80GB external HDD. I want to install Mandriva in that USB drive (On 40GB partition specifically) and walk with it anywhere.

Unetbooting only supports up to Mandriva 2008. Is there a software to do So?

Multiple linux distro's on external HDD, is it possible?

Hey guys,
I have an idea to take my old 160GB internal HDD from an old desktop, and converting it into an external HDD. And then, I want to partition it into four parts, 40GB each, and install four different distros on it. The reason I want to do this is because I want to get LPIC-1/2 and CCNA certified within the next year or so, and I want to play around and get experience with configuring the different distro's. So, here are my questions..

1. First of all, is it possible to do this? I thought it through, and I don't see anything that can prevent it, change BIOS to USB Boot etc.

2. When I format the drive in windows, and partition it, what fomat should i use? FAT32?

3. When the HDD is plugged in and I start up my laptop, will GRUB ask me which OS I want to run?If not, how will I choose the Distro?

4. Lastly, what are the top 4 distros used in the industry today? I have an Ubuntu Dualboot now, but heard that Red Hat is popular in the USA and SUSE is in Europe. And another one used is...?

5. Should I install the normal distro or the server version?

Basically, I just want a normal Windows based Pc that I have now with Ubuntu on a 10GB partition, and whenever I feel like practicing, I want to plug in my external hard drive and boot to either one of the four installed and start playing around, configuring it etc. Im currently studying Linux+ material to get the heads up on the Shell commands etc.

Sorry if this is a long q, but I havent found someone who did this on the net. Don't know what you call it, quadruple boot HDD or something. Any advice for learning Linux and the LPIC course would also be appreciated and what will be good for industry.

News Story Linuxdistrus nolongerexista: What Happens When a Linux Distribution Goes Extinct?

It's a fact of life that Linux distributions go extinct and it happens more often than our Linux fan base would like to admit. At last count, there are approximately 50 individual distributions that are now extinct. What happens to the poor unfortunates who adopt and use these defunct distros? Are they left in the cold or are there alternatives that are close enough that a relatively tech savvy administrator could migrate apps and dependencies to another distribution? Some of these distributions were excellent and very capable. Damn Small Linux (DSL) is a notable one that I used extensively and have written about. It's very disappointing to have a distribution pulled out from under you when you depend on it for productivity.

I know that operating systems come and go, developers get tired and sometimes technology might make some of them obsolete but it still stings a bit, doesn't it?

Sure, I could pick up on a project like DSL and do something with it but IANAP* and have little time for such things. Can't someone else grab it and keep it updated for those of us who love it? I would donate some buckazoids to the project to bring it back to life and to help keep it going.

I'm just a cranky individual but what happens to businesses that adopt distributions that go extinct? I've recommended DSL to businesses in the past. Now I have to go back and tell them that it's kaput. That doesn't bode well for DSL or me. It also makes Linux a less palatable choice for businesses to think that something they've built business intelligence or user dependencies on is now gone.

Is our only choice to stick with the "mainstream" distributions for guaranteed updates and new versions? I don't necessarily want to do that. Some of the hottest innovations and clever additions are in those oddball distros created by certain basement dwellers. But, if you can't depend on them for longevity or business continuity, I guess it's back to commercially backed distro X for me.

Tell me what you think about extinct distributions. Is this a big negative aspect of Linux adoption unless it's from an established commercial entity?

I have a .txt file with around 1000 lines in it - each line just has a number. What I want to do is to copy all 1000 lines and paste it into an excel sheet.

So, I went up to the first line, changed to visual mode, and used shift+g to select all lines. Then I used ctrl+insert to copy them and then I went to excel and pasted them - but, only 41 lines get pasted!! :(

Trouble using nohup with &

Hey!!

I'm trying to use the nohup command in background mode (i.e. with the '&' at the end.)

When I generally run the program, I use the command:
./xyz "argument 1" arg 2 arg 3 arg 4 > output.txt

This works fine. Even when I append nohup to it, i.e. type:
nohup ./xyz "argument 1" arg 2 arg 3 arg 4 > output.txt
it works fine. The file output.txt is created and contains the correct data.

However, when I add the '&' sign at the end, as in:
nohup ./xyz "argument 1" arg 2 arg 3 arg 4 > output.txt &
it doesn't work... I mean it shows me a PID, and when i run 'ps', it shows that the process is running... But after I kill the process and check output.txt, the file is empty!!! I even tried checking the file without killing the process first - that didn't help either... where am I going wrong??

nvidia settings not surviving reboot??

Hi all

Yesterday my resolution was changed and I tried to change it back but nvidia wouldn't list the resolution I wanted 1280x1024 so I removed the nvidia driver and re-installed it.
After that it worked, it listed the resolution i wanted, but then this morning I booted up and the resolution was 1152x864 so i entered

gksudo nvidia-settings

and changed my resolution back to 1280x1024 and clicked apply, then save to X configuration file, and it did. Upon reboot the setting were back at 1152x864 so I tried it again but every time I reboot the settings are lost. On Google I found some people having the same problem but clicking "save to X configuration file" does the job but in my case it doesn't.
I am using nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 180) [recommended]
Can anyone help me please?

1. BLAG - Blag is an operating system. Blag has a suite of graphics, internet, audio, video, office, and peer to peer file sharing applications. Based on Fedora, Blag has just about everything you'd ever need for productivity and fun.

2. Dragora - Dragora is an independent distribution of GNU/linux based on the concept of the simplicity. It aims to be a multipurpose, stable and powerful operating system while maintaining the simplicity of Unix. The initial release of Dragora was June 13, 2008. Dragora GNU/Linux 1.1 was released October 8, 2009.

3. Dynebolic - A GNU/Linux distro that focuses on audio/video production with a host of applications such as Jack, SuperCollider, Csound, Fluxus and of course Pure Data with a great collection of externals (PDP, PiDiP, Gem, GridFlow, RRadical, PixelTango).

4. gNewSense - a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian and Ubuntu, with sponsorship from the FSF. This is the distribution that Richard Stallman himself uses--so you know it's good because he could use any of them.

5. Kongoni - Kongoni is the Shona word for a Gnu (also known as a Wildebeast) the animal which inspired the name of the GNU operating system. Kongoni is a desktop-oriented operating system with a strong belief in being truly free software. This means that Kongoni will neither include nor ship any software not under a license approved by the Free Software Foundation.

6. Musix GNU+Linux - Based on Knoppix and oriented toward audio production, Musix contains a giant repository of free software. Don't let the website fool you; Musix is available in a variety of languages including English.

7. Trisquel GNU/Linux - Based on Ubuntu, with all proprietary and non-free software removed, Trisquel is a free and easy to use operating system with multi-language support.

8. Ututo - The first fully free distribution recognized by the GNU Project. This one is Gentoo based and is actively developed in Argentina.

9. Venenux - VENENUX GNU/Linux is a free/libre operating system primarily for people in Ibero-America. It aims to cover the needs of any type of user, with software for almost every necessity while remaining fast and easy to install. VENENUX is the fruit of the work of a group of people of different Hispanic countries.

There are a few distributions that come close to free but still contain non-free and proprietary software, allow you to install non-free software or advertise non-free software during the installation process. These will be listed in an upcoming post so watch carefully for that. In the meantime, if you can check out these nine very capable distributions and report back to me on how you like them.

What do you think? Is it important or not for a distribution to be composed of and only allow free software?

Sound card issue

I have dual boot system with Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 9.10 on same HDD. There is and irritating issue with Creative Audigy SE where the card will work under one OS, but not on other (so either it work with XP and not Ubuntu, or vice-versa).

The other question is: What is the different between JDK, SE and J2SDK in Linux. The package said that I should set JAVA_HOME =/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04; however, I did not find that on my system. Is it possible to set it to (for example) /etc/java OR /etc/alternatives/…?

Every time I start my laptop, I must point to Places menu and mount the drive D: where contains my documents. D: and Linux partition are different. I want to mount automatically when the computer starts. How does that make such that?

And the other one is:

I must type a long command to change current directory, e.g:
$ cd /media/Programs/Study/Linux....
I want to make a script and place it in the user's folder. To go to the directory quickly, I need to run the script.

Setting crontab to pull database

I'm working in a location with a physical server, and the company I am working for is in a different location, and has a cloud server with a different address.

Database backups work using automysqlbackup script in the cloud server also. But the database backups that I want to pull from the cloud server is quite huge and cannot be exported to my local server using phpMyAdmin.

So can I use the scp command in the crontab to pull the backed up database daily into my local server? , i.e :

Ubuntu's CEO, Mark Shuttleworth fired one over Microsoft's bow with a statement that the soon to be released Ubuntu 9.10 is ready to go head-to-head with Windows 7 on Netbooks. He also said that Windows XP is still hanging around on some Netbooks as a "ghost." Shuttleworth wants another shot at the U.S. market with his new Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu One offering. Ubuntu One is a file backup and sharing service where registered users receive 2GB of free storage and 50GB of storage for $10 per month.

I hope that works out for you Mark. I really do. Ubuntu is the ultimate Linux distribution built upon the best parent distribution (Debian) available today.

There's just one small catch: Not everything works yet.

That's actually a pretty big catch.

Windows has the best driver and application support. It also has the advantage of having the favorite corporate Kool-Aid taste. In other words, big companies like Windows because it's created and supported by one of the world's best companies: Microsoft. I know what you're thinking: "He's a traitor" or "He's being paid by Microsoft." I wish it were true that someone was paying me some big buckazoids to say these things but they aren't.

I love Linux. It's my favorite operating system. I use it and support it every single day of my life--and have for the past 14+ years. I have a full system dedicated to it and at least virtual machines running Linux various flavors. It has shortcomings for a user interface (formerly known as a Desktop) computer.

Linux is the best server operating system currently available. No question about it. On the user side, well, that's another story. Though I'm a big user of all Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, CentOS), I use it almost exclusively as a server operating system.

At one time, I used Linux as my primary desktop but I just can't do that any more and haven't for a long time. The reason? Mostly it's about ease of use and compatibility. Sure, I could use OpenOffice.org and remember to Save As all the time for everyone who uses MS products, I could forfeit my QuickBooks, I could use web-based apps for everything and I could just play Delta Force any more too. That last one would certainly make my wife happy. But I don't want to have to go to a lot of trouble just to use a computer.

I'm afraid Mr. Shuttleworth has his work cut out for him when trying to compete with Microsoft for user attention. It isn't likely to happen any time soon. There are too many issues and problems surrounding the use of Linux for a user's computer. One is peripherals and gadgets like phones, iTunes, printers and Netbooks.

Netbooks? Hey, that's what started this whole post. What's wrong with Ubuntu and Netbooks? Probably nothing, but for Mark Shuttleworth to assume Ubuntu 9.10 is going to compete favorably with Windows 7 on Netbooks, he must have something up his sleeve. I hope it's more than just a little magic or marketing hype because I've seen Windows 7 and it's good. Really good. I've also seen Ubuntu 9.10 and it's good too. Really good.

It should be an interesting showdown when both have had a chance to be Netbook-proven.

What do you think about the best operating system for Netbooks? Is Windows XP a ghost? Is Windows 7 all it's cracked up to be? Will Ubuntu 9.10 break in to the Netbook market in a big way?

A company called Tilera today announced that it's working on a chip containing 100 processor cores, which it says could be seen by 2011. It's part of its new TILE-Gx line of 64-bit multi-core processors, the first of which--a 36-core chip--will be sampling by the end of 2010, the company said today in a statement. With its top-end TILE-Gx100, Tilera claims to outstrip Intel's next-generation Westmere processor in performance-per-watt by a factor of 10. Other models will contain 16 and 64 cores, and will sample in early 2011.

But all those cores won't do much good without applications to exercise them, right? So Tilera also offers Multicore Development Environment, a simplified multi-core Eclipse-based IDE that can target SMP Linux 2.6, Zero Overhead Linux, Bare Metal Environment and hybrid systems. The package includes an ANSI C/C++ compiler, system simulator, GNU command line tools and graphical multi-core application debugging and profiling.

The breakthroughs in multi-core technology are the result of an architecture under development since 1990. TILE-Gx chips share local cache across all cores, and a proprietary two-dimensional interconnect eliminates the need for an on-chip bus.

“We believe this next generation of high-core count, ultra high-performance chips will open completely new computing possibilities,” said Tilera CEO Omid Tahernia, a 21-year veteran of Motorola who joined Tilera in 2007 after running the DSP division of Xilinx. “Customers will be able to replace an entire board presently using a dozen or more chips with just one of our TILE-Gx processors, greatly simplifying the system architecture and resulting in reduced cost, power consumption, and PC board area. It's a cell phone for crying out loud. Do you get it? A cell phone. You know, you make and receive phone calls on it. It's a telephone that you carry around in your pocket. Who gives a rip whether it's equipped with a web browser, a file editor or an ice cream dispenser; it's a telephone. People who care about the operating system or applet X on a cell phone are either under the age of 18 or don't have anything better to do with their time.

I don't really care that my cell phone uses some version of Microsoft Windows or Linux or Mac or OS2. I just don't care. As long as I can make and receive phone calls, I just don't care.

I apologize to all my faithful readers who want me to rail against the oppressive Microsoft and its crashy Windows operating system and champion our collective free software fight but when it comes to the operating system on my cell phone; I just don't care.

I remember a day when telephones, cell phones included, didn't have (or need) an operating system. We survived somehow without one. We survived without browsing the Internet on our telephones and we're still here alive and kicking to tell you about it. We also didn't need to 'text' anyone--especially while driving.
Do you want to know why we didn't need to text someone that, "we're bored?" We didn't need to. We had a telephone that dialed their number so that we could say in a loud, clear voice, "OMG, I'm sooooooo bored."

Yes, that's right, we actually spoke. With our voices. To each other. In some cases, we actually met face to face (f2f) with each other and some of us actually enjoyed it. I know that sounds crazy but we did it.

And social networking, that was hanging out together at the mall, clubs, scouts, school, or in (gasp) special interest groups.

Oh, far be it from me to suppress your non-creative, non-blinking idle chit-chat on Twitter, Facebook and the like but, and this is way off the hook (a term from old telephones that you picked up off the "hook"--oh never mind...), when we had an emotion, we didn't have to create a three-stroke winky face to show it, the other person could actually see and hear our emotion by looking at or listening to it.

Sorry, I digress.

So, why should I care that my cell phone has which operating system or any operating system at all? I don't. It could be Android, Shmandroid, KlaatuNix, CharlesMansonNix or even BalloonBoyNix for all I care. I just want to make and receive phone calls--reliably.

So wot do u think? R u bored w/ cell OS talk 2? Holla back n tell me. TTYL. ;-)

Cron job problems

Hi I've set my crontab as follows :

The script I'm using to function as a cron job is a database backup script, which is automysqlbackup .So by right my daily backups should be at 5.30 p.m in the evenings.

But I noticed that my database does not backup on Saturdays. It backs up on Sundays, but not Saturdays.
There is another default crontab scipt in the /etc directory :

Why does the database not backup on Saturdays at all, but does backup on Sundays at 5.30 p.m?

Linux setup problem

Hello everybody.
I have a SIS-based dtk MiBook S52 laptop (SIS chipset, SIS ethernet, SIS vga ...)
I have tried to setup linux on it, but the installer hung up and I can't determine the problem
the distribution I tried are:
1- RedHat
2- open SUSE 10.2
3- Fedora 10
4- Ubuntu 8 live cd
but neither of these dist.. does work
I cannot determine the problem but I noticed the following in Fedora 10:
/tmp as ramfs : and at this point the installer stops
ubuntu live cd:
the progressbar reaches the half then it stops for ever.

please if someone can help me in this problem.

cron job not running for big time intervals

hi friends

well m facing a different sort of issue in my cron.
i hav set job like this

30 09 * * 1 /bin/backup14M
01 14 * * 1 /bin/backup14N
20 18 * * 1 /bin/backup14E

that is for every Monday at three different times.
but, first job executes well, later ones do not. I checked my scrip result at 14:05 hrs, and it was not executed, i change the job to 14:08 and it executed well at the specified time, then checked at 18:21 hrs for the output, again it didnt execute, and i changed the time to few more minutes and it executed at that time. All i noticed is, that if i change the time to few minutes, it executes, but it do not execute for big intervals.
Can anybody tell the problem and the respective solution

Mentionable:- I hav the checked the basic cron forums, so find my issue lil different from the mentioned.. Using centOS 5.3 system.

Flash videos won't play sound

Ok, so here goes, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it seemed closest to me. I recently set up a dual boot on my laptop to run XP and Ubuntu 9.04 (or some number relatively close) and I installed Flash player 9 because it wouldn't take 10 for some reason, and now when I watch videos, lets say on YouTube, the video itself plays fine, but there is no sound. I'm going to run the update manager as soon as I can get a chance too, to see if that'll fix the problem.

Any ideas will be much appreciated. Oh, and I am new to Linux OS's.

Ethernet: Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
WLAN: Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card

I have installed "Sun VirtualBox" on my Vista Home Premium.
I have installed "openSUSE v11.1" using VirtualBox.

I cannot connect to the internet in LINUX.
The network settings on Virtual Box are as follows:

Network Adapter 1:
PCnet-FAST III (NAT)

SUSE detects only the ethernet port and identifies it as
79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE]
MAC: 08:00:27:b4:55:87
Device NAme: eth0
Started automatically at boot
IP address assigned using DHCP

How can I configure the settings in both Virtual Box and suse to connect to the internet. I am completely new to Linux so a little spoon-feeding will be appreciated.

I am kind of working backwards. I built a live site and then created a development site. Anyhow, the Dev site is built on ubuntu desktop. The site works fine.. INSERT INTO Exception
"Except I noticed that certain images weren't appearing. I discovered the site is case sensitive. This is not so with my host.

I have heard that case filters are a solution for my problem I'd like to know where I can attain one and if there is any particular preference for these solutions.

Hello,

We have a problem. We have a router which has, amongst others, ports 80 and 443 open. Both are pointing to one machine running apache2.

However, https on 443 works, but http on 80 doesn't.

nmap shows port 80 as filtered (why?), and port 443 as open.

I have stopped the firewall on the web server. I have made no changes to the apache2 config since installing it. Still no "It works" page!

Any help gratefully received!

Since I'm not familiar with some of the distributions on this list, most of the information is taken directly from the distribution's own website.

1. Arch Linux - Billed as a lightweight and flexible Linux distribution that tries to Keep It Simple. Arch Linux is an independently developed, i686/x86-64 general purpose GNU/Linux distribution versatile enough to suit any role. Development focuses on simplicity, minimalism, and code elegance. Arch is installed as a minimal base system, configured by the user upon which their own ideal environment is assembled by installing only what is required or desired for their unique purposes. GUI configuration utilities are not officially provided, and most system configuration is performed from the shell by editing simple text files. Arch strives to stay bleeding edge, and typically offers the latest stable versions of most software. Arch Linux uses a "rolling release" system which allows one-time installation and perpetual software upgrades. It is not generally necessary to reinstall or upgrade your Arch Linux system from one "version" to the next. By issuing one command, an Arch system is kept up-to-date and on the bleeding edge.

3. Hannah Montana Linux - I laughed out loud when someone asked me why I didn't include it in my top 10 for 2009. It's a real distribution, based on Kubuntu, with a Hannah Montana theme. It is not vulnerable to Windows viruses. I've tried to keep my eight-year-old daughter from seeing this one--so far, so good.

On the consumer side, Mandriva develops and distributes Linux distributions: Mandriva One, the light, easy to use and safe free distro, Mandriva Free, the pure GPL free Linux distro, Mandriva Powerpack, the complete and customizable distro for the power user and Mandriva Flash, the mobile desktop USB key. Free products are available for download from the Mandriva site. Commercial products are available through Mandriva's electronic store, in retail stores and through partners worldwide. The company provides a number of electronic services through its web site. It evaluates its number of users to a few millions. On the corporate side, Mandriva helps large and medium size organizations to migrate to Linux, thanks to its Corporate Desktop and Corporate Server products and helps them administer large number of machines thanks to its system administration tool, Pulse. The company provides to its corporate customers technology, products and services (consulting, training and support). It has about 100 corporate customers.

5. Mepis - Mepis is a Debian-based distro that touts its ease of use, user friendly interface and a live CD image that allows you to try before you commit. The unique nature of MEPIS Linux makes it an ideal foundation for developing a custom version of Linux for large scale deployment. MEPIS is available to work with integrators and end user clients to develop privately branded and optimally tweaked Linux configurations.

6. OpenSUSE - OpenSUSE advertises itself as follows: openSUSE is a free and Linux-based operating system for your PC, Laptop or Server. You can surf the web, manage your e-mails and photos, do office work, play videos or music and have a lot of fun! The openSUSE project is a community program sponsored by Novell. Promoting the use of Linux everywhere, openSUSE.org provides free, easy access to the world's most usable Linux distribution, openSUSE. The openSUSE project gives Linux developers and enthusiasts everything they need to get started with Linux. I didn't include it in my top 10 for 2009 list because it might come in the top 20--just not the top 10. I don't hate openSUSE but it definitely isn't one of my all-time favorites.

7. PCLinuxOS - PCLinuxOS was founded in October 2003. The flagship product, the PCLinux operating system, is a free, easy-to-use Linux-based operating system for the home. PCLinuxOS was founded by Texstar, and is headquartered in Houston, Tx. PCLinuxOS is distributed as a LiveCD, and can also be installed to a local hard drive. LiveCD mode lets you try it without making any changes to your computer. If you like it, you can install it to your hard drive. Locally installed versions of PCLinuxOS utilize the Advanced Packaging Tool (or APT), a package management system (originally from the Debian distribution), together with Synaptic, a GUI frontend to APT. PCLinuxOS has a script called mklivecd, which allows the user to take a 'snapshot' of their current hard drive installation (all settings, applications, documents, etc.) and compress it into an ISO CD/DVD image. This allows easy backup of a user's data and also makes it easy to create your own custom live CD/DVD.

8. Puppy Linux - Puppy Linux calls itself; small, fast and free OS. It is a small but full-featured distribution. Puppy Linux is an operating system for computers. Puppy Linux is based on GNU/Linux. It is completely free and open source software. At ~100MB it's worth checking out for a mini distribution. I put Damn Small Linux in my list because I've used it for some time and this was the alternative that some of my readers suggested.

9. SUSE Studio - While SUSE Studio isn't really a distribution, you can build distributions from it--as long as you want them to be openSUSE-based distributions. SUSE Studio is a website that assists you to build customized appliances for use as standalone machines or as virtual machines. I'm including here simply since it was mentioned by a reader. I love SUSE Studio and highly recommend it for others to use. The only drawback is that you can only use openSUSE. If there was something else this cool that you could use the distro of your choice with, I'd be willing to purchase it.

10. Tinycore - Tiny Core Linux is a very small (10 MB) minimal Linux GUI Desktop. It is based on Linux 2.6 kernel, Busybox, Tiny X, and Fltk. The core runs entirely in ram and boots very quickly. Also offered is Micro Core a 6 MB image that is the console based engine of Tiny Core. CLI versions of Tiny Core's program allows the same functionality of Tiny Core's extensions only starting with a console based system. It is not a complete desktop nor is all hardware completely supported. It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access. The user has complete control over which applications and/or additional hardware to have supported, be it for a desktop, a netbook, an appliance, or server, selectable by the user by installing additional applications from online repositories, or easily compiling most anything you desire using tools provided.

Someone also mentioned FreeBSD, which is not Linux but is still worth a mention. I'm not a huge fan of it and though it touts itself as very secure, it was the only system on my network that ever got hacked. I didn't install or support the system; one of my employees did and noted that one day it was hacked and owned by someone who did a fair job of covering his tracks though we did trace his steps back through several other systems and notified each one along the way.

Home Folder is 40GB ??

Today I entered

and noticed that my hard drive was 80% full. I checked my home folder and my files came to 7.3GB but when I viewed all hidden files it comes to 40.6 GB.
I realise they belong to programs but 33.3 GB ??? I have looked in applications and un-installed the programs I don't use but it doesn't seem to have made a dent in the size due to the program sizes being so small.
Short of re-installing is there anything I can do to clean my system up as it is only an 71GB drive, 54GB is used and 13GB free and its a bit cramped for my liking.

Now i dont know how to go about connecting to my Broadband using my username and password. i fiddled around and found a place to put in my username and password, but somehow my computer doesnt seem to connect to teh remote server. someone pl help. thx in adv

I had the honor and pleasure of speaking to Richard Stallman a few days ago while he was in New Zealand on a speaking tour. I had been in an email conversation with him over several days asking about which software programs he uses and I finally connected with him for some clarification and more details. So, if you've ever wanted to get the scoop straight from the man himself, you'll want to listen to the podcast.

The conversation begins abruptly because the phone conversation is a continuation of that email dialog. We also got cut off at one point during the interview and I had to call back.
I found him to be very personable, articulate and a pleasure to speak with. He was very patient with my nervous fumbling and was quite happy to discuss free software, his software choices and even his choice of computer.

To begin, I wanted to know not just about free software and the movement but his personal choices and I got quite a surprise. He is definitely no hypocrite. He is so much of a free software advocate that he even chose his personal computer because of the type of BIOS it uses.

I personally feel that using only free software is very limiting and would be very difficult to successfully accomplish. Richard Stallman doesn't find it difficult at all.

After speaking with him, I wrote "What Free Software Means" and placed it over in the *nix Software forum. Our conversation has certainly changed the way I speak of free software and my perspective on the whole movement.

For the bits that we didn't get to in the phone call, here is the list of software that Richard Stallman uses on a daily basis:

Email: Rmail
Editor: Emacs
PDF Viewer: xpdf
Audio: Audacity

He doesn't typically use a browser unless he views html offline. He only uses OpenOffice.org when someone sends him a file in those formats. My guess is that if you send him a proprietary file formatted file, he would either not open it or send you back a message stating that you need to convert the file to a free software alternative.

I liked speaking with him so much that I asked for another interview where we could actually have some time to sit down and do something in-depth. He agreed. He will be in southeast Asia next month and I'll catch up with him for that interview. Stay tuned for that one.

Ubuntu has redeemed itself with its latest version 9.10 (Karmic Koala). I took a look at Ubuntu 9.10 on October 1st and have been playing around with it for a few days. My first impression is that it is good stuff--seriously good stuff. From the new, updated installer to the faster boot times, I'm impressed. Way to go Ubuntu developers, you deserve applause for this one.

I didn't think that Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) was all that great. There weren't enough improvements over 8.10 to justify a whole new distribution or wasting a cute name on it.

Karmic Koala's installer is the best I've ever seen on any Linux distribution. It's fast, nice to look at and, most important of all, it's easy for people who might be new to Linux. Click through a few screens; enter your name, login name, password and computer name--and away you go toward having a new Ubuntu system. The more difficult part for most users will be the download, burning of the ISO image to a CD and changing their BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive.

Boot times are also much improved. This isn't necessarily limited to just Ubuntu as several Linux distribution developers have been working toward shortening your wait time in the boot department.

Once inside GNOME, you recognize all the familiar desktop items. Nothing new going on here although you might notice a few cosmetic changes with your startup screen and desktop background. I'd have to say though, that the improvements made are well worth the wait from older versions.

If you've been waiting to jump in to Ubuntu, Karmic Koala is the place to do it. And if you have an older versions, this is the one to upgrade to. Wait for the production-level release to come out later this month because right now the 9.10 distro is still in beta.

One word sums up this Karmic Koala Ubuntu incarnation: Super.

You often hear the terms 'free software' and open source used interchangeably but they're not the same. In fact, true free software zealots launch into a fiery diatribe on the issue should you even utter the words "open source" when speaking of free software. Free software is not related to the amount of money you pay (or don't pay) for software; it is an ideology. Free means freedom. Most writers relate the concept to free speech or free beer, however, neither fully illustrates the concept.

Free software, as defined by the Free Software Foundation (FSF), comply with the Four Freedoms.

Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.

Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.

Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies.

Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

So, you see, for Freedoms 2 and 3 to be met, the source code must be available. And not only must it be available, it must be available for modification for any purpose, commercial or otherwise. These two freedoms make the term 'open source' redundant and unnecessary.

The other major issue with the term 'open source' is that it does not imply freedom of any kind. Just because you can look at the source means nothing from a freedom perspective. Restrictions might keep you from modifying the code for any purpose, redistribution or charging for your new version. These restrictions are abominable to the FSF and its members.

The two key points to remember are:

Open source and free do not mean the same thing.
Free software has nothing to do with price.

Okay, ive got a 1024x768 13" laptop display and a 1280x1024 19" LCD external display.

Ive managed to get it extending the desktop onto the external monitor okay but it wont go any higher than 1024x768 when extended. Thats a bit naff, as thats the whole point i own that monitor, so i can have room for coding, and have the design document on the big screen. Is it possible under Linux? I mean it should be? It has been on windows since 98SE lol...

I have a nix machine at home that is connected to the the Internet via adsl. Now i am adding another Internet connection (Fiber optic). How can i do load balancing between these two connections??

( by load balancing i mean that i would like to utilize the available bandwidth to the maximum. I also have a collection of softwares that are very bandwidth hungry and also require a certain level of minimum bandwidth for example my HD video conferencing software requires at least 10Mbps.

Any idea or suggestion will be very helpful. I am using Ubuntu 9.04.

Problem Dual Booting Ubuntu/XP - Can't get into Windows

I have been using a dual boot system for several months with no problems...Windows XP PRO on drive 0, and Ubutu on drive 1. Use GRUB to choose which OS. One day, about 2 weeks ago, for no apparent reason, I can't get into Windows. When I choose Windows from GRUB, I get the "Starting Up" message, and nothing happens. Can get into Ubuntu fine, everything works fine. Can access files on the Windows drive from Ubuntu, and the Windows disk get a "PASS" on the diagnostics check. Bearing in mind that I am not a techie, what can I try to resolve this. I tried running the repair console from the Windows CD, no luck, it does the file overwrites, then says to reboot, but can't access Windows. Any help appreciated..lwould really like to not have to reformat the drive...most stuff is backed up, but hate to reinstall all the programs. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys!

I'm trying to achieve a new ***working*** audio setup on ubuntu after upgrading. As always, after every upgrade, I have to start again. So I'm wondering if there are people out there who would be willing to share their insights of the process. I have already and unsuccessfully spent a lot of time trying to get a less confusing picture of the beast but the truth is linux audio is still really messy, with a lot of subsystems, oss, alsa, pulseaudio, jack, etc. The problem is I don't know what I should stick to. For a while, it was ok for me to accept the situation, but now I'd really like to be able to fix it. I'd like not to have to switch to xp whenever something doesn't work like it should (actually, I always switch to xp if I want to watch dvd's (with menus!) without something inevitably going wrong, but this is another problem... or is it?)
So, what do you think? All contribution will be welcome!

This is the third entry in the continuing "cave dwellers" saga and their new lives with Ubuntu. Someone posted a comment on the previous cave dwellers entry about iTunes not working on Linux and I was absolutely sure that it did. It doesn't. Much to my surprise (and disappointment), iTunes isn't available as a native application on Linux. What's a penguinista to do? Try WINE of course!

I installed WINE, downloaded iTunes' latest Windows application and installed the file. Quicktime and some other applications installed but no iTunes. I tried several times--still no iTunes. I googled. Nope, still no iTunes.

I turned to the youngest cave dweller (13) and said, "I know I've heard you play music on this, how did you do it?" He said, "Napster." I then asked him how he downloaded and synced music with his phone. "We don't. Not since you gave us Linux. We have to use Mom's laptop (Vista)."
I sat silent for a moment until my wife said sarcastically, "Linux not working for you, dear?"
"Yeah, it works for the important stuff" I retorted.
I told the boys that I would research these issues and get back to them.

My wife also asked about printing to our printer (Canon iP1600) from their laptop. I said, "I don't have that working yet." The printer is shared off of my Windows XP workstation. I tried using alternate drivers but it's no use, it would never print their documents. My workaround was to copy their work to my Windows computer and print from there. It's just as well, since their papers need much editing and polishing before being turned in to their teachers.

Yes, I updated the system. Yes, I searched for applications and extras to make everything work. Yes, I'm going to wait for 9.10 to see if it makes any improvements before concluding that this isn't going to work for them. Although they aren't particularly put off by Ubuntu's or my shortcomings on these, I still feel responsible.

They can do 90% of what they need to do and 50% of what they want to do on Ubuntu. I still think it's the best choice for them and me. I've heard no slowness complaints, no viruses, no spyware, no oddball connectivity problems and no random freezes requiring a flurry of reboots.

Ubuntu works. Not perfectly. But it works. It's not for everyone. It might turn out that it isn't for them either but at least I'll be able to say we tried.

Write back and tell me what works or doesn't work with Ubuntu or other distros. I'd be glad to try anything to get printers, iTunes and mobile phone syncing to work; so let me know your experiences.

partitioning space in ubuntu

Greetings for the community of this forum!

I have a Doubt...

I have a primary partition for Windows and an Extended Partition for Data.

I have decreased the size of the primary partition, so now I have 20GB of unllocated space.

When I put the live cd of Ubuntu, I know I want space for / "root", /home and swapp.

The partition type for the root, /home and swapp should it be primary or logical?

This is my doubt

Hello all.
With help on forum i've got the ideia of making the script to check if the file was created today and if its so,print its name.
Here it is:

#!/bin/bash

for file in *; do

        filedate= "date -r $file +%Y-%m-%d"

        currentdate= "date +%Y-%m-%d"

        if["$filedate" == "$currentdate"]; then

        echo $file

fi

done

After reading some tuts, it appers to be parcially valid, but i get the next errors :

./script.sh: line 6: syntax error near unexpected token `then'

./script.sh: line 6: `  if["$filedate" == "$currentdate"]; then'

I will never again refer to the Linux Desktop in any of my writings beyond this post. From now on, it's the Linux User Interface, which encompasses the likes of GNOME, KDE, LXDE, XFCE, CLI and others. These Linux User Interfaces may be used on any Linux-enabled device. These interfaces are not limited to a single type of machine designated as a 'desktop' and I'll not diminish the importance of them by mentioning them in that realm again. Since the dream of a world blessed with desktop computers running Linux is a dream (and a far-fetched one at that), I'll leave its reference to the lesser of my literary colleagues to ponder.

Instead, the Linux User Interface (LUI - pronounced Louie), is now a catch-all for any of the aforementioned window managers. And LUI might refer to a desktop computer, a server computer, a wristwatch, a PDA or a netbook running Linux with a particular window manager running on it. The LUI is how you interact with the operating system and not a particular class of computer.

Gone are the days of the hopeful Linux Desktop. Gone are the days of the tumultuous desktop wars. Gone are the dreams of one day waking up and finding that the US Government has converted to Linux desktops. And gone are the days of my attempts at convincing the world that anything but Windows or the Mac OS will ever serve as a desktop user interface for the masses.

As cryptic and elusive as the lyrics of the Kingsmen's song Louie, Louie; The Linux LUI is a mystery unto itself. I can't unravel it and I'm going to stop trying.

how to run windows applications using unix command prompt?

i changed the directory using cd $HOME but i dont see any .profile files under that directory. am i missing it? or it can be under some other directory? is it required to have it?

/dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2

Device Boot Start end Blocks id system
/dev/hda1 * 1 15 83 linux
/dev/hda2 16 9729 8e linux LVM

DO I HAVE SOME REMAINING SPACE.......?

and If I want to do further partitions in existing then how......?

here their is any concept of primary and secondary(logical) partitions.........?

kindly help to understand this concept and if there is any relevant video then its very helpful for me...........

Makefile with multiple directories

Hi,

I am a total newbie when it comes to makefiles and now I'm in a need of one.

I have a directory structure as follows:

Project_root/Makefile

Project_root/src/

Project_root/src/widgets/

Project_root/include/

Project_root/include/widgets/

Each directory contains multiple source/header files.

I need to build a shared library out of this directory.

Please help me!

mkisofs help

What mkisofs options would you use to ensure the ISO loads and can run on Solaris 8/9/10 when the ISO is made from a Solaris 10 system? There are some pretty deep directories, but I don't know how deep. I also suspect there are some hidden files (start with ".") and some long file names.
