I understand that you have an IP address that is generally provided through your internet service provider, but that is only from the gateway.

The reason I am asking is I am trying to write a script to get to my TiVo programs remotely without using remote desktop. I understand that you can make a request through a port. But how do you know which device that port is supposed to go to?

I have been trying to get some help from Linksys for the past two weeks but all they can tell me is they have never heard of this.

I have 8MB download after I cycle power. After a week it is less than 1MB, after one day it loses about a meg. Every time I cycle power it goes back to 8MB.

The router is out of warrenty so I am willing to buy a new one but the reviews on the 610 are so bad and after not being able to get any help from Linksys I am thinking of getting a different brand.

News Story 10 Things I Hate About Linux

It's hard for me to admit it but there are things, ten things to be exact, that I really hate about Linux. Sometimes I think it's just me but I do see other people stating a few of these in the forums so I'm at least not alone with some of these issues. These are in no particular order and they aren't just rants; they're legitimate problems and issues that I find annoying, destroying or cloying. Feel free to add your own to the list in the Comments section.

1. Too Many Good Distros - I hate the fact that it's so hard to choose among all the distributions (distros) to use. It's almost impossible to settle on just one for daily use. If you've seen my "10 Best Linux Distributions of 2009," you'll know why--they're all good. When I looked for a distribution to use for myself--other than virtualized ones, it was next to impossible. I finally decided on CentOS because of its basis in Red Hat Linux. It was a matter of familiarity. For most other server-oriented things and appliances, I use Debian--the King of Distributions.

2. Lacking Popular Application Support - No, Linux doesn't need to run Microsoft Office and I know about OpenOffice.org but still there's a barrier to application support for Linux. Now, a lot of the lack of application support isn't because of Linux necessarily but if you're a software company like Intuit, which distribution do you support? Do you support SUSE and alienate Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu, Slackware and others? Or do you offer your application in several different formats and in source form? It's a difficult, if not impossible, task. Maybe if all the distro maintainers would get together and come up with a single package format but that will never happen.

3. Dependencies - Whether I'm compiling from source or installing individual packages, there seems to be a never-ending list of dependencies that I have to satisfy before I get to install my original software goal. Often I forget what it was that I started when I get buried in dependencies. Yum and apt-get help considerably in this area but they aren't perfect. On server systems, I often like to compile my apps for better support and performance so I have to spend hours downloading, compiling, satisfying dependencies for those dependencies and so on and so on. The solution isn't easy since developers will often use a diverse list of software in their own but it would be nice if they would just go ahead and package the dependencies along with their software since I'll need them anyway. I know sometimes there are license restrictions but if there are such restrictions, use a different package.

4. Rancid Fan Base - I know that the fan base isn't part of Linux but goodness some of these people are absolutely mouth-foaming and borderline crazy. Even a longtime Linux fan and semi-expert like myself, will receive hate mail about something I said. It's incredible how many "experts" (who have vehemently opposing opinions) I run into when giving my analysis of something Linux-related. I don't mind when people comment intelligently but all too often I just get weird and rancid commentary. People who think of things like Linux as a religion bring a certain 'extremist' flavor to the mix. It turns off a lot of people, not just me.

5. Linus Worship - Many of the fans mentioned in #4 above fall into this category as well. People assume that Linus Torvalds created free software and that Linux was all his idea. What they (and possibly you) fail to realize is that ideas are built upon by many people over time. Linus used Minix as a template in developing Linux though he decided to use a monolithic kernel instead of the microkernel architecture of Minix--he still had a head start by using it as a design "go by." It was actually Richard Stallman who first came up with the idea of a GNU (Gnu's Not Unix) operating system based on all free software while Linus was still in diapers. This is one reason why Stallman insists on Linux being called GNU+Linux.

6. Anti-Linux Nerds - This is a generally ill-informed group of Windows fanboys who'd rather spend their time complaining and grinching about which they know very little and contributing nothing of value to either Linux or Windows. My favorite batch of do-badders is over at linsux.org. Though not directly related to Linux, without Linux they'd only have the Mac OS to rail against and that loses its luster pretty fast, since those sandal-wearing, ponytail-sporting, Prius-driving, one-button-pressing Mac addicts are far too intellectual to bring themselves to respond to such drivel. I, however, am not--I do like a good fight. Keep 'em coming linsuxers--you provide me with plenty of posting fodder.

7. Unchattiness - This hate derives from Linux' Unix origins. Unix isn't chatty and therefore Linux isn't chatty. We should really change that. For new users, this is especially annoying. The unchatty nature of Linux is often one of the major barriers to Linux adoption among the masses. Although they don't know what to call it, that's what it is: Unchattiness. There's no "Abort, Retry or Fail?" and no "Are You Sure?" prompts to guide the user. Linux, like Unix, assumes you know what you're doing and it lets you do it. This is bad. Really bad. We need more than just a nice, sleek installer and a cute Windows/Mac-like desktop interface, we also need some feedback about what the hell we're doing when we're doing it. Come on guys, make it chattier or else. Or else I'll complain some more.

8. Built-in Virtualization - What's up with this? Built-in virtualization--right into the kernel. Now there's an innovative and bold move to be sure. KVM has been included in the kernel code since kernel revision 2.6.20. I don't have a problem with virtualization being built into the kernel but I'm wondering how they chose KVM over OpenVZ? OpenVZ seems like more of a natural fit, if you ask me, because it is container-based virtualization better known to the world as BSD jails. This type of virtualization comes standard with Solaris, OpenSolaris and the various BSD derivatives. I don't hate built-in virtualization. I hate the fact that OpenVZ isn't also part of the kernel. It would make sense to do so.

9. Software Repository Trickery - I hate that there's a lot of non-free software hidden in software repositories that you can be tricked into installing without any warning or knowledge. There should be separate repositories for non-free components and a warning when you install those components. Installing those components without my knowledge or approval is a violation of my freedom. See the Free Software Foundation (FSF) information for details. Before someone takes away your freedom, you should be warned and have the choice to refuse the software.

10. Stability - This is an odd hate but hear me out on this. For eight years, I owned and operated a computer consulting business and whenever I converted parts of my client's infrastructure to Linux, I basically hurt myself. I hurt myself by giving them something so stable and unbreakable that I found myself wondering why I had done such a silly thing. Oh, it was good for them. They didn't have to call me that they had a virus or other software weirdness on their systems nor did they have to call and say our system just rebooted and knocked everyone off. The time I spent automating their tasks with shell scripts, PHP and Perl was for naught--at least for me it was. It wasn't until I had several of my clients on Linux that I realized what I had done. I was killing my business. After I woke up, I decided to let nature take its course and allow them to use their beloved Windows and I would cash the checks.

Do you have any Linux hates to complement mine? Add yours in the Comments section.

Has your server's memory reached its 192GB limit? Last week a company called Netlist was demonstrating a new RDIMM technology that it claims can double per-CPU memory capacity without doubling the cost and without replacing any other hardware. At Supercomputing 09, the high performance computing industry's annual conference, Netlist showed off its so-called HyperCloud 16GB DRR3 RDIMMs elevating a machine to 384GB of memory per CPU.

Set to begin shipping in the first quarter of 2010, HyperCloud RDIMMs also will be available in 4GB and 8GB versions, and according to Paul Duran, director of business development for Netlist, work interchangeably with today's standard parts. "They are essentially plug-and-play with the JEDEC standard with no issues," even when they are installed on the same channel, and require no bios changes, he added.

The technology employs proprietary logic that Duran said appears to the CPU as two physical ranks of memory (the maximum), but actually contains four, allowing dual socket servers to be populated with as many as 24 16GB RDIMMs. Duran said that vRank also helps performance. "The CPU is tricked into thinking it has a single load, therefore it will run at 1,333 [million transfers per second] when you have four DIMMs populated per channel." In today's systems, the CPU supports 1333 MT/s only when populated with one DIMM per channel, he said. With two, it decreases to 1067 MT/s and with three it drops to 800. Doing the job are two ASICs and a register device with the rank multiplication logic. Isolation circuits between each DRAM and the bus connector provide the load reduction.

While exact pricing was not disclosed, Duran said HyperCloud's cost-per-gigabyte will be close to that of other products--which vary depending on the DRAM spot price--plus "a 20 percent premium for this technology."

To pin down the problem, I attached ethernet cable from cable company direct to netbook and was able to link up with Internet. I have not yet attempted to go to a WiFi location and punch in their security code to establish whether it is a router problem or an internal problem with the Netbook...Any suggestions?

I got this project about building a secure communication between 2 user, with the help of a server. And I was confused.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The description said:
􀂙 You should implement a chat server and a chat client; two online clients can talk to
each other with the help of the server.
􀂙 A new user should register with the chat server (after registration, the user gets the
public key of the server).
􀂙 Secure all traffic afterwards between the chat client and the server as well as between
the chatting clients.
􀂙 Both public-key and private-key encryption algorithms should be involved.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A new user should register with the chat
server (after registration, the user gets the
public key of the server)." Should this registration done in 2
seperate machine, the user and the server, through internet? But
before this , the user and the server do not have a compromised shared
key for communiation, if this message was send in plain text, surely
any people can intercept this. Should we hardcode this part?
What I interpret from the project description, I
should use a KDC(key distribution center) for distributing session key between 2 users. Then I
refer to the notes in the chapter about KDC, it mention the
communication involved not only the public key of server, but also a
Ka and a Kb known to the KDC, then I assume these 2 key- Ka and Kb(The notes said"Assume that A and B have keys kA and kB respectively that are shared with the KDC."),
was transferred during the registration process. But the registration
process is not secure....What is your opinion?

News Story Does Linus Torvalds Hate Freedom?

According to an ongoing debate over the GPL version 3, he does. How can this be, since Linus Torvalds, creator and chief architect of the Linux kernel, knows about software freedom and free software? He doesn't have a problem with what Richard Stallman refers to as "tivoization," which is the practice of using software available under the terms of a copyleft license but prevents the user/owner from modifying that code through the use of protections. Stallman believes that this is a blatant violation of your freedom. Linus disagrees.

Stallman's argument:

Quote:

One major danger that GPLv3 will block is tivoization. Tivoization means computers (called “appliances”) contain GPL-covered software that you can't change, because the appliance shuts down if it detects modified software. The usual motive for tivoization is that the software has features the manufacturer thinks lots of people won't like. The manufacturers of these computers take advantage of the freedom that free software provides, but they don't let you do likewise.

Some argue that competition between appliances in a free market should suffice to keep nasty features to a low level. Perhaps competition alone would avoid arbitrary, pointless misfeatures like “Must shut down between 1pm and 5pm every Tuesday”, but even so, a choice of masters isn't freedom. Freedom means you control what your software does, not merely that you can beg or threaten someone else who decides for you.

Torvald's rebuttal:

Quote:

[Stallman] calls it "tivoization", but that's a word he has made up, and a term I find offensive, so I don't choose to use it. It's offensive because Tivo never did anything wrong, and the FSF even acknowledged that. The fact that they do their hardware and have some DRM issues with the content producers and thus want to protect the integrity of that hardware.
The kernel license covers the *kernel*. It does not cover boot loaders and hardware, and as far as I'm concerned, people who make their own hardware can design them any which way they want. Whether that means "booting only a specific kernel" or "sharks with lasers", I don't care.

Who's right? Well, I hate to say it but they both are. Stallman, however, is more correct.

Stallman is correct when he states that freedoms are restricted when someone uses code that is distributed under a copyleft license, such as the GPL. To me, and to him, this is wrong because you can't use code that is unrestricted and then restrict its use. That violates the license because under the GPL, you must be able to inspect and modify the code, if you choose to. Tivoized devices make this impossible.

Linus is correct when he says that manufacturers can design their devices any which way they want. Where he deviates from accuracy is when he says that the manufacturer can use Linux or any other code that's unrestricted and then restrict it. Manufacturers have choices with which to work that don't include GPL software. Minix, for example, uses a BSD license. A version of Windows or Mac OS would be two other good choices--except there are of course those nasty license fees one would have to pay.

It seems to me that manufacturers want the best of both worlds: They want to use something free but then want to turn around and violate the license by making it impossible for you to exercise that freedom. This is wrong. And I'm surprised that the FSF hasn't taken these manufacturers to task and to court over such practices.

What do you think--do you think that appliances like the TiVo violates the terms of the GPL? What do you think should be done about it?

I was wondering if someone could help me out because I am running out of time on the project, all I need to do is send you a few questions possibly to your inbox on the forums or msn or your email and if you could answer them for me that would be so great! If anyone is in the mood to help I would really appreciate it. Either reply here saying you would like to help or private message me.

At my last, best count, there were over 550 individual Linux distributions. From the most generic, flat installs of the most common distros to ultra-specialized, multimedia-oriented to the eye-popping, fancy ones--they're all there for the taking. I found ten distributions from among the 500 or so that I know about to spotlight these for some special feature or set of features that will dazzle you or entice you to try them for yourself. Read on and get ready to download.
One word of caution: Some of these distributions are so clever and cool that, once you begin working with them, you just might lose track of time and forget what you're supposed to be doing.

In alphabetical order, my favorite ten special Linux distributions are:

1. 64 Studio - Ah, 64 Studio, based on Debian/Ubuntu, is one fine piece of work. This is one distro that you could lose a lot of sleep to--especially if you're the creative type. I'm so much of a multimedia wannabe that I burned almost ten straight hours just checking out everything and making a total multimedia fool of myself--I'll spare you the disgusting details of my romp. I discovered one thing very quickly: I'm not smart enough to be productive with 64 Studio. If you're a multimedia mogul, proceed happily with this one. It comes with 2D/3D graphics programs, animation software, publishing, web design, audio production, video editing and some stuff that I know so little about that you'll have to discover it for yourself. Get this one but beware--I think that once you start working with it, you enter a dark 4th dimension where time seems not to exist.

2. ArtistX - Another time vacuum for those of us who aspire to artistic greatness. ArtistX sports almost every available free multimedia software program and suite in existence. Chances are that if it isn't in ArtistX, you might not need or want it. Like 64 Studio, it has way too much software to list but if you're a multimedia professional or want to be one, ArtistX will take you there and back. Between 64 Studio and ArtistX, I'd need two high-end computers, four monitors and lots and lots of time. And perhaps a vacation.

3. AsteriskNOW - Leaving the multimedia realm, I discovered AsteriskNOW while attempting to create my own voicemail, fax server, VOIP gateway system. The software installs easily, as advertised, and almost everything worked without a hitch. I think the main problem I had was that I had purchased my board on an auction site and the hardware might have been less than perfect. My suggestion is that, if you're serious about an Asterisk solution, purchase a supported board from the source: Digium. I've seen Asterisk in action and it's impressive. For the cost of the board, a computer and a few hours of time, you can have a communications solution worth thousands.

4. LiveKiosk - If you need a web-based kiosk, then this little gem is just what you need. You use it as a live CD or a flash-drive kiosk. The only drawback that I can find is that its wireless connectivity is limited in that it doesn't support WEP or WPA security. The CD image is small (~140MB) and is ready to boot and serve.

5. LinuxMCE - This is the coolest thing since sliced bread and sliced bread is the bomb. LinuxMCE is a smart home solution with the following features/controls: Lighting, climate, media, security and telecom (using Asterisk). LinuxMCE is so advanced, I'm surprised that home builders aren't including it in their multimedia home options. It does everything except make breakfast and I'm sure that someone is working on a module for that.

6. Puppy Linux - So many of you, my faithful readers, use Puppy Linux, I have to include it here. Puppy is cool because it is small, fast and easy--besides actual puppy breath, what more could you ask for? You don't even have to install it, since it works from a bootable CD or USB drive--take it anywhere with you. At just over 100MB, it's a cheap computer on a flash drive. If you want a full-blown OpenOffice.org installation, you'd better opt for a 512MB (or larger) flash drive. Puppy Linux is good stuff. I hope someone is working on a "fetch my slippers" module and puppy breath extensions would be awesome too.

7. SuperGamer - And now for a real time-wasting experience, I'd like for you to meet SuperGamer; a live DVD with games that are either native to or optimized for Linux. I wasted...ummm, productively spent one whole day of my much needed vacation playing with this one. I had to hide the DVD and website from my wife who really hates any computer game other than solitaire. Boot with caution and have eyedrops nearby.

8. Tempest Showroom - This one wins the prize for "Totally Worthless Linux Distribution." This live CD makes your computer monitor send out radio signals that you can pick up on a radio. Have fun but don't tell anyone. I've included it here just so you can receive the same sense of joy I did when I heard Beethoven's Fuer Elise played by my monitor.

9. Zenwalk - A real Slackware-based distribution that delivers a fast, sleek, full-featured distro with everything you need for productivity and software development. There are five editions of Zenwalk, find one for yourself: Standard Edition - XFCE plus all the goodies mentioned above, Core Edition - No GUI but a ready-to-create server system, Live Edition is the Standard Edition on a bootable CD image, the Gnome Edition contains everything you'd expect plus Gnome and there is a special ZenEdu Live Special Edition designed with school-aged kids in mind.

10. Zeroshell - This Linux distribution provides you with a complete network management system. It acts as a router/bridge, firewall, http proxy server, load balancer, VPN Server, RADIUS Server, LDAP Server, DNS Server and more. The new versions (1.0+) will also have SMTP and IMAP services. You can install it, run it from the bootable CD or install it on a flash drive. This is one of the most complete solutions I've ever seen for providing comprehensive network services and security.

Have you used any of the distributions mentioned in this post? If so, write back and tell us how they worked for you. If you know of good alternatives to any of them, let us know about them and your experiences.

Hello

I'm new and I have a question to submit to you. This is my situation.

I have some company services on one machine that is inside of my lan. I have a static ip (for example: 20.20.20.20) for this and I have setted my dns to accomplish my needs, configuring (always for example) the subdomain "forge.mycompany.com" as A record on my static IP 20.20.20.20.

Now, all works well from the outside, but from the inside of my lan, if I put in my browser "http://forge.mycompany.com" I can't resolve it.

I tried adding a "fake" domain zone "mycompany.com" in my internal dns server (based on Bind9 and used to resolve internal addresses on the zone "mycompany.int"), setting a CNAME for "forge.mycompany.com" to "forge.mycompany.int" that I had previously created. Now all seems work also inside my lan, but obviously now I can't resolve all other existing "mycompany.com" subdomains.

I hope I was clear... Anyone have an idea?

Thx

That should be: "Unable to modify shared files and folders."

I am running Active Directory on a Windows Server 2003 Standard (SP2) machine. I added an external hard drive to hold shared files. I didn't have an problem moving the files from their original location on the server's internal HDD. However, I am no longer able to modify the files or folders from any machine except the server itself. The Windows Vista message I receive when trying to create a new folder is "You need permission to perform this action." I can view and open files but they open read-only. When trying to save changes or create a new file, the message is "You don't have permssion to save in this location."

I set the file permissions to full control for all users. That made no difference. I set the file permissions to full control for an individual user. Using that account from a client system made no difference. I logged onto a client with an admin account; that made no difference. I logged onto a client with the admin account and even that did not make a difference. (However, if I'm at the server itself, it works.) I checked effective permissions and it shows full control (all boxes checked). There are no deny settings in place at the moment for anything on the share.

The drive is a WD My Book Essential (1 TB). It has the option of password protecting the entire drive but I did not activate that. It is running drive management software (WD SmartWare).

I had connected another USB drive in the past for file sharing and had no problem with it whatsoever.

Does anyone have any idea what I should try to get this worked out? (By the way, I've already restarted both the server and the client systems.)

My brother got a laptop the other day and i have been having some trouble setting it up with our existing wireless network. I have a laptop that is about 3 years old and a D-Link wireless router. I could get my brothers laptop to connect to the router but if he turned the laptop off then back on, it would fail to reconnect. It seems to be working now but i'm not really sure why.
See bottom of post for technical details. I will add details if necessary and when i am able (i.e. if i'm not at work).

I am no expert when it comes to networking, it's not really my thing. So i have a few questions which i am not sure if they are a problem.

Firstly, what could be the problem with my brother's laptop? A while ago i was having trouble with my laptop's connection and found that updating it's wireless card driver. Would doing the same with my brother's help?

Second, i have noticed that the DNS Suffix is "domain.invalid". Is that bad? I don't really know what that means so please indicate how i can elaborate on that so you guys can better diagnose the problem.

Third, i was also trying to set up file sharing between both computers. I eventually figured out that i had to allow it in Norton's firewall, but when googling i read that i should set each laptop's ip (i.e. static) as 192.168.0.x. But when i did that i could no longer access the internet. What's the difference between static and dynamic and why the difference?

Details:
Wireless router: D-Link DI-524 802.11g
My laptop: OS: Windows XP SP3, Wireless card: Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG
Brother's laptop: OS: Windows Vista (Home Premium i think), i'll check the hardware specs when i get the chance

When my tcp/ip server software connects to the end device (the serial device), the available bandwidth is reduced drastically. Here is a screen shot of the bandwidth usage when connected to two port servers:
I used wireshark to have a look at the packets being sent accross the network. It seems that the network conjestion is being cause by a Duplicate Acks sent by my computer. Here is a picture of the wireshark capture:

Hey

I'm new and I kind of joined out of desperation.
I apologize in advance if my English is too bad for this type of subject and/or if I'm posting something that isn't allowed here.

Right now, I'm in the middle of a school project where we are to describe a complete network including:
- Cash register
- Office PC
- 3 x Home PC
- And of course stuff like server, router, and so on.
Cash register and computers all need access to the same updated data in an accounting software that I guess will be installed on the server. The software is supposed to update storage and register sales from the cash register. Then it should be managed on the computers.

ANY advice, references, help, tips would be helpful.

Have a great day!
I have already enables xp's firewall with no exception checked but it still leaves many holes open.
One solution that came to my mind was using fake arp batch file on all clients but its a pain to load it everytime pc starts.

Hi

What are these terms? What is the difference?

I am kind of new to servers but I understand what is a server, client, and transfer protocols like ftp, sftp, vpn etc. I have also created server using filezilla and transferred files using it, and I unsuccessfully tried creating sftp server using OpenSSH. (After doing all the stuff I got an error says, openSSH.exe is not valid windows executable.... something like that, I took help from here http://www.digitalmediaminute.com/ar...ver-on-windows, but that is a different issue I will create another thread for that, mentioned it just to give a background).

That being said, my company's IT guys is bothering our analytics team over these terms. They are saying our server is not secure, and they need some 5000 USD to buy and some monthly charges to maintain the same. (They say our existing server is a public server, I don't know what does that mean). I tried googeling but couldn't find a satisfying answer.

So please help me here.

We are expecting around 5000-7500 hits/sec which in turn might increase in the near future. What would you suggest in terms of hardware specifications? I'm more of a software developer than a network engineer, so I would welcome suggestions.

Hi all! I am using Sitecom WL-160 Router to share Internet from PPPOE Modem. Today I wanted to update the firmware on the router, so used the utility from sitecom (1.67v), anyway I mistakenly uploaded the wrong file, after that the router restarted but didn't work, now I can't use Wland or Lan, I can't access the interface through 192.168.0.1. I reseted the router many times, but it doesn't seem to react. I checked the IP adress from the router, and I attached it to let you see it.
So What can I do? The router functions as it has no software at all. Although when I connect it to the ethernet it shows it is connected (for example through port 2). I still have the two files of the Firmware which I should have uplaoded to the router. :icon_exclaim:
Any help?!
Many thanks in advance!

"If we went into an “evil room” and had an “evil light” shined on us, and we then behaved in an “evil” way we would be destroyed… there is a fundamental trust between Google and its users.”
~Eric Schmidt, Google CEO

Google released an exciting new product today called the Dashboard. I don't usually call Google products exciting because it makes me sound like I'm writing their marketing literature, but the Dashboard provides a way to see an overview of all your activity across every Google product you use. And if you're like me, that's a lot. Instead of guessing what information Google has, you can now see it all in one convenient place.

Getting To The Dashboard

Accessing the dashboard is a simple matter. Follow these steps:

Go to Google.com.

Click Settings > Google Account Settings and your account page opens.

At the top of the page in the right column labeled Personal Settings, click View Data Stored with Account (next to the Dashboard label). The Google Accounts page opens with all of the information across each of your Google accounts.

Why It's Great

I always loved that quote at the top of this post from Google CEO, Eric Schmidt above. It suggests that for some reason we should just trust Google with our data. It's an absurd notion of course, and even more so in that ridiculous quote, but Google Dashboard is a good first step. It gives users a one-stop shop to see all of their data and settings.

As individuals interested in accessing and understanding data, this is a huge step forward. For businesses, it's even more important, especially from a regulatory and compliance point of view. It gives everyone, big or small, access to their data in a simple fashion, which is as it should be.

Google's Free Tools Are Attractive and Scary

When I saw Marissa Mayer's presentation recently on the Google's new social search, one thing jumped out at me. You have to give Google information about your social networks in order for the search engine to display social search results. This seemed like a huge thing to ask users, and it goes directly to the heart of the problem many people have with Google. Yes, the tools are wonderful and free and available wherever you go, but any thinking person has to wonder about the portfolio of information that Google has on each of us -- our mail, our search history, what we read and the pictures we take, the videos we watch and the ones we add, and on and on it goes. And the social search would mean Google would have access to our friends too (whom we associate with).

All of this is a bit scary, so you'll have to pardon me if I don't trust Eric Schmidt's assertion that they won't ever step into that "evil room." But for starters, the Dashboard at least gives us insight into what information that Google has on us its databases, and gives us the opportunity to change our privacy settings and to delete services we don't want anymore. It may not be a panacea for paranoia, but it's a start, and I'll take it.

(You can watch it here.) Her piece was so slanted toward the Motion Picture Association of America, it was almost laughable (if it weren't so maddening).

At one point, Stahl explained P2P networking using Bit Torrent in a way that made it sound like it was used exclusively for movie pirates and that it was the brand new gee-wizz technology--neither of which is true. In fact, many mainstream media companies are using P2P technology to deliver their content, and have been for years, because it's cheap and efficient.

BitTorrent is Mainstream, Baby

BitTorrent, the software that Stahl shows off in the piece was developed by Bram Cohen, who is Chief Scientist and company co-founder of BitTorrent, the company. His company, the one if you listen to Stahl's piece is responsible for moving pirated content around the internet, has many media companies as its clients.

According to its web site, clients include Fox, MTV, Warner Brothers, Lions Gate and Paramount. If the movie industry is so worried about piracy on BitTorrent, it certainly has no problem using its 100+ million client network to distribute content.

The MPAA flacks interviewed in the piece who suggest that pirates are stealing their profits neglect to say MPAA members are using the same technology the piece was demonizing.

Understanding P2P

P2P (or peer to peer) networking is nothing more than a technology for distributing content across a network of peer computers, taking advantage of the computing power of each one. Like any technology it can be used for good or ill, depending on who is using it. I published an article for StreamingMedia.com back in July, 2007 about the mainstreaming of P2P. As I wrote at the time, quoting Monty Mullig, who was was SVP of digital media technologies at Turner Broadcasting System Inc.:

Quote:

“I would say that P2P as a technology, per se, hasn’t been the problem for content and copyright owners. It’s been the use and the way some services that are based on P2P technology have been deployed. There are plenty of ways to use P2P distribution that don’t infringe on the interests of copyright holders,” Mullig says.

Imagine that. There are ways to use the technology that don't infringe on copyright owners. You would never know that from the piece broadcast on Sunday night.

Stahl Unbalanced

Stahl's piece was flawed in so many ways, but she seemed to mix the up idea of pirates creating physical copies and selling them for money with those who were distributing movies for free over the internet. Meanwhile, she failed to acknowledge (while never even naming by name) that P2P technology has legitimate content distribution uses. Further, she had spokespeople from the MPAA and director Steven Soderbergh, but never saw the simple contradiction between the MPAA's position in this piece and the fact their members are partners with BitTorrent.

My fellow-DaniWeb blogger Davey Winder wrote the other day in a post, Hold the Front Page: Piracy is Not Killing the Music Business, a recent study found that people who downloaded music tracks illegally actually spent more on music than people who didn't. Winder suggests that it's not piracy that's the problem at all, but a failure to understand the way content is distributed in 2009.

He's spot on of course, and the same lesson applies to the MPAA. It's time for them to stop demonizing software and trying to tie piracy to organized crime and figure out ways to use the technology to sell and distribute their content. 60 Minutes has a long reputation for hard-hitting investigative pieces, but this piece did it a disservice. At least try to get a dissenting opinion next time. Wouldn't have been that hard to find.

Hello All,
At the moment of time, I am taking a Network Course in my college, and seems everything going NICE! (I hope it goes nice till the end of the semester)

Anyways, I had a problem that I solved but it didn't make any sense to me at all.
a-It asked for the Channel Capacity if the channel is noise free
I solved it and I got 400kbps

b-Then it asked for the Channel Capacity if the channel is noisy with a signal-to-noise ratio of 20dB.
I solved it as well and I got 665.82kbps

I checked it with one of my friends solution and he also got these numbers (not necessary to be correct though), so my question here, is it logical that a Noisy channel has more capacity than a noise free or not?? AS it doesn't make sense at all, because I think that for a Noisy channel the Capacity should decrease.

Thank you!

I'm having the most frustrating time trying to connect to FTP servers in order to upload files. I try to connect to a number of different FTP servers and cannot connect to any of them.

I've tried connecting to the same servers using the same FTP programs on a second machine and it has no issues at all.

I've done ping and tracert tests on the machine with the issues and the internet connection is definitely NOT the problem. I've looked at network settings but with my little knowledge about networks I've not been able to see if there are any issues. Both PCs have the same network setup so I doubt it's a network issue.

I'm at a loss, anyone come across a similar issue?

News Story Stimulus Funding State Internet Mapping, Too

In addition to funding broadband projects (http://www.daniweb.com/news/story231771.html) in the states, particularly in rural areas, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, also known as the stimulus package, includes funds for collection of state-level broadband data...

In addition to funding broadband projects in the states, particularly in rural areas, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, also known as the stimulus package, includes funds for collection of state-level broadband data, as well as state-wide broadband mapping and planning.

The project, which will also help create a national broadband map, is being managed by the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

The State Broadband Data and Development Grant Program, announced on July 1, is a competitive, merit-based matching grant program that will provide approximately $240 million in grants to assist states or their designees to develop state-specific data on the deployment levels and adoption rates of broadband services, the NTIA said. Awardees are required to contribute at least 20 percent non-federal matching funds toward project costs.

Each state could have only a single, eligible entity to perform the mapping. Applications for the program were accepted from July 14 to August 14.

On September 9, the NTIA announced that it had received applications representing all 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia. Fifty-two of the 56 states (or their designated entities) also submitted requests for broadband planning funds, typically about $500,000 each over a 5-year period, the NTIA said, which also released a list of the applicants.

Now, the NTIA is beginning to announce grant awards made to the states for mapping. On October 5, the NTIA announced the first grants:

California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC): approximately $1.8 million

Indiana Office of Technology (IOT): approximately $1.3 million

Rural Economic Development Center, Inc. (e-NC Authority): approximately $1.6 million

Vermont Center for Geographic Information (VCGI): approximately $1.2 million

The CPUC was also awarded $500,000 for the cost of broadband planning activities in California over four years, bringing its grant award total to approximately $2.3 million, and the e-NC Authority was awarded approximately $435,000 for the cost of broadband planning activities in North Carolina over five years, bringing its grant award total to over $2 million, the NTIA said.

On October 23, the NTIA announced a grant of approximately $1.4 million to fund broadband mapping and planning activities in West Virginia. In addition, the West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey will receive $185,000 for the cost of broadband planning activities in West Virginia over two years, bringing its grant award total to approximately $1.4 million.

My issue is dealing with my internet connection. I have never had this problem till this weekend when i hooked it up to my aunt's internet. It will be working and connected fine to my network then bam the whole internet dies completely, or it decides to switch to a different internet connection in the area. Then i go through the frustrating process of trying to reconnect to my network that all of sudden can't be found. I've even sat right beside the router to make sure i was in range. My sister's computer doesn't have this problem with her internet. So I don't know what has cause the sudden stupidity in my laptop. I've uninstall/reinstalled my wireless program and I have used windows as my default wireless connection. Neither processes has work no longer than 5-15minutes. When i try to repair the connection it says can't connect to network and such. It says I have good connection at times but no connection.

I'm running all the necassary scanning programs on my computer to make sure it's not a virus but i still haven't found anything.

So any ideas what I should do and what could be causing this?

News Story White House Site Switches to Drupal

The Associated Press reported (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iuRIVBTLUvW7823FC-fcfhvkSxHgD9BHLF180) this weekend that the official White House website (http://www.whitehouse.gov/) has been switched to using the open-source Drupal content management system

Using open source...

The Associated Press reported this weekend that the official White House website has been switched to using the open-source Drupal content management system

Using open source will result in improved security -- because more programmers will be looking for errors in the software -- as well as more quickly and less expensively updated, the AP said.

The White House site had been using technology held over from the administration of former President George W. Bush, but the staff had been working toward the transition since the inauguration. For example, the website that tracks stimulus spending, launched in February, was already built using Drupal.

Several other federal agencies, such as the Department of Defense, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Education, and the General Service Administration, are also said to be using Drupal.

However, modifications made by the White House staff, such as to improve security, have not thus far been given back to the Drupal community, noted Tim O'Reilly in his blog. "The source code for Drupal (and the rest of the LAMP stack) is indeed available, but the modifications that were made to meet government security, scalability, and hosting requirements have not yet been shared," he said.

News Story Groups Working to Set Up .Gay Domain

Two groups are working to set up a .gay top-level Internet domain, with plans for using some of the proceeds for registering sites in that domain to support gay causes, according to an article (http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/23/competing-groups-press-for-a-gay-internet-suffix/) in the...

Two groups are working to set up a .gay top-level Internet domain, with plans for using some of the proceeds for registering sites in that domain to support gay causes, according to an article in the New York Times.

While it can cost up to $400,000 to set up a new top-level domain, companies compete for control, because the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees the development and management of the Internet’s unique identifiers, awards the registry rights to just one applicant for each new top-level domain, which can result in millions of dollars per year, the Times said.

Currently, the two groups are competing for the right to apply by each claiming to be more gay than the other. "The Dot Gay Alliance (dotgay.org), out of New York City, is being led by a longtime gay activist," the Times said. "And dotGay (dotgay.com) is being spearheaded by a heterosexual German man in Riga, Latvia, who has incorporated a company in San Francisco."

The Dot Gay Alliance points out that it is run by a gay man, while dotGay points out that it is based in San Francisco and that its head has experience setting up new top-level domains.

Neither of the for-profit groups has said what percentage of revenues it would commit for gay causes, though Joe Dolce, founder and executive director of the Dot Gay Alliance, spoke favorably of Al Gore's declaration that he would support a particular group's right to the .eco top-level domain -- where a similar fight is taking place -- only if half the proceeds went to environmental causes.

http://i34.tinypic.com/2qcjkup.jpg
The cables themselves are Cat5e and connect to standard 8P8C wall plates. I'm sure they're for Ethernet, but the connectors themselves are bizarre. The one on the right of the picture is mangled up, so I have no clue why anyone would want to install connectors like this. I must not be understanding their purpose.
If it helps, the connectors have printed on one side:
A92/831/0051
And on the other:
T568A Lucent

Any help identifying these is appreciated!

We have a very small environment, 20 or less servers across 4 geographically spread locations. All connected via a MPLS WAN with T1 speeds. I want to monitor/alert on the following items:

Up/Down status on servers(including individual services would be a huge bonus)

Windows Event log errors

Disk space utilization – trends

Non server hardware alive status(routers, switches etc…)

Custom alerts(ping, batch file etc..)

I can't invest much right now, so freeware is the best. The solution needs to be a standalone app that is not hosted by a 3rd party.

Suggestions?
We are currently playing with spiceworks. Seems to be a lot of advertising going on and I don't feel comfortable my info isn't being sent offsite.

News Story What Broadband Projects are in Line for Stimulus Funding?

In the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, also known as the stimulus package, Congress appropriated $7.2 billion for broadband grants, loans, and loan guarantees to be administered by the USDA’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The deadline for submissions was earlier this year.

Now, you can search the database yourself to find what projects were submitted.

Endeavour Partners, a consulting company, downloaded the data to see what it could find out about the proposals.

First of all, $28 billion in requests was submitted for $7.2 billion in funding.

Other observations include:

2,186 applications were received

The average application size was $12.7 million, but the median application size was $2.7 million

Alaska had the largest total dollar amount requested, at $1.3 billion

The largest application was from RADgov, a proposal to build and connect computer learning centers in underserved communities across the US for $938 million

The top 10 states requesting the most money were California, Florida, Colorado, Alaska, New York, Texas, Virginia, Missouri, Maryland, and Illinois.

The top 10 states requesting the most money per capita were Alaska, the District of Columbia, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Hawaii, Vermont, Colorado, New Mexico, and Maryland.

While a number of the top 10 per capita states actually are laggards in terms of broadband availability, "three of the top 10 states ranked on funding requests per capita are in the top 10 for actual broadband performance: Rhode Island, the District of Columbia, and Maryland," the group said. "These are all densely populated areas with meaningful broadband competition."

Awards for this first round are expected to be announced in November.

"It will be interesting to see how the process plays out – if awards will be made to a few large, pork barrel projects or if dollars will be carefully allocated to the rural states and areas where broadband economics break down and private sector competition is likely to remain weak," Endeavour concluded.

If you were asked to offer a multi-site video conferencing solution, where quality is more important than price, what would you offer? With my current knowledge I can offer just two things: 1) Use hardware codecs for pears and make one server MCU. (This way I offer just intallation and configuration of the hardware) 2) Use PC for each pear/site and make one PC server MCU. But "implement" codec and the needed software. This way I will offer my software, "my" codec + configuration and installation.

What other options do we have in video conferencing? I think I also have to choose among different protocols if I choose to implement a software: what are options, their pros and cons.

Actually this is a question of someone who knows very little about video conferencing. So advices in any level and links to short and helpful tutorials are very welcome.

Thanks.

p.s. I found this section to be suitable for my question, but if there is more suitable section, please feel free to move it to there.
Thanks again.

It's not just phishing scams that Facebook users have to worry about right now,

According to Roger Thompson, the Chief Research Officer with security vendor AVG, hacked Facebook applications are increasingly reaching out to exploit sites based in Russia. As Thompson says, this is different to the normal run of things whereby people are linking to hacked pages innocently enough on social networking sites. "These seem to be actual Facebook applications that have been hacked" Thompson points out, adding that the application developers are "innocent victims too".

AVG researchers first spotted the trend when a fire-fighter simulation game which it assumed was a developer hack, pointing to a Russian site where a scareware scam was being peddled. But when they looked closer, they discovered in the source code for the web pages an injected iframe that did the damage.

What is not obvious at the moment is just where the holes are in the infected Facebook apps which are letting the bad guys inject their code, but Thompson is as sure as he can be that the app developers are just as much victims as anyone else in these matters. So far AVG has uncovered at least 8 Facebook apps which have been compromised, and the full details can be found here along with screenshots of one exploited app and the exploit sites it reaches out to.

Maybe it is time to rethink the way that Facebook approaches app development and reconsider adopting the Apple approach to app security?

The other day I was on Facebook and a chat window popped up from a college friend of mine.

Bob: Hey there. How are u doing?
Sharon: ok. you?
Bob: Am not too good. Im in some kind of deep mess right now
Sharon: uh oh. what happened?

What "Bob" didn't know was that I was already suspicious of him by then.

Bob: Im stranded in London. I got mugged at a gun point last night!

Sure you did, "Bob."

This is a classic example of the "I've been mugged!" scam that's been going around Facebook chat. A friend starts a chat, tells how they've been mugged in some world city, and begs you to use Western Union to wire them some money.

(Poor Western Union. Does anyone use them for anything legitimate any more?)

Not to mention -- robbed at gunpoint? In England? Are you kidding?

But I played along.

Sharon: oh no!
Bob: All cash, credit card and phone was stolen!
Sharon: that's terrible!
Bob: Thank God i still have my life and passport
Sharon: yes, for sure
Bob: I need your urgent help Sharon!
Sharon: how can I help?

Then I waited for "the touch." Sadly, there were no more messages, and four minutes later "Bob" had signed off.

I got into email to contact "Bob" and let him know what was going on, only to find email from him in my mailbox, warning that he thought his account had been hacked and to ignore any chat messages from him.

What tipped me off is that I'd read articles about this method. But what tipped Bob -- the real one -- off?

"They tried to change my contact email address," Bob said. "FB sent a notice asking me to confirm the change. I had not initiated said change, so I knew something was up."

(Notice, too, the sorts of word choices and spelling the real Bob uses, compared to the fake one.)

What should you do if you're on the receiving end of one of these scams? Experts suggest that you try to confirm some piece of information that only the real person would know, such as the last time you saw each other or the names of their children or pets. And, of course, try to contact the real person to see if they're actually in London or wherever.

Obviously, also, pay attention if you get an unexpected message trying to change your email address. Bob took the additional step of emailing his friends, plus posting a message with his real location so people would be suspicious if they then heard he was in London.

Sadly, many of these scams are perpetrated outside the U.S., so it's tough to nail them.

I'm stunned.

Not because people are installing fake antivirus systems. That's a shame but in some ways it's inevitable; people on their own will fall for scams. No, what alarms me is that the IT community (and if we include journalists and bloggers that's all of us) are doing so little to dissuade them.

It wouldn't take much. An email sent to all remote workers reminding them that not only should they not install pirated software onto their systems, not only is clicking a link in an email from someone they don't know and filling bank details in after that a really, really bad idea, but if someone approaches you with AV software it's probably fake. Coming from someone they trust, like an employer, it could transform the way scams succeed on the Internet.

Now if you'll excuse me I have a mail telling me my ISP is going to close my account if I don't log on and confirm all of my passwords...

News Story Gary McKinnon wins extradition reprieve for psych review

Just when it looked like every avenue to prevent the extradition of self-confessed NASA Hacker Gary McKinnon had been exhausted, especially when just last week a couple of High Court judges denied him leave to appeal his case to the highest court in the UK, it looks like the hacking cause célèbre has got a reprieve.

In an unexpected twist, Home Secretary Alan Johnson has delayed the extradition proceedings while he considers the medical evidence. Diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, it has been argued by the Free Gary campaign that to send him to prison in the US would be the equivalent of signing his death warrant.

Certainly there seems to be a groundswell of opinion (both here and in the US) that were McKinnon tried in the UK he would most likely face a more lenient sentence. I myself have argued that he should face the music, as it were, in the UK rather than the US. I recently stated right here on DaniWeb that "I seriously doubt that McKinnon could get a fair trial in the US where he has already been branded a fugitive from justice (for merely going through the legal process of appealing against an extradition order, something to which he has every legal and moral right) and various government and military mouthpieces have made it quite clear that they think the book should be thrown at him and McKinnon should get 'what he deserves' which would appear to be 60 years in a supermax prison apparently".

However, I have also made it quite clear that I believe McKinnon should not be let off with a slap on the wrist. He has broken the law, he admits as much, and must face the consequences - Asperger's Syndrome or not. This has, let's face it, been dragged out long enough now. McKinnon was arrested way back in 2002 and the 43 year old needs to be prosecuted and tried in a court of law so that he, and everyone else, can move forward.

Hello,

My brother's computer (in another room) is equipped with a cable modem connection. My computer is connected to my brother's computer via a cross cable (a straight cable + jointer + small cross cable so as to change back to straight cable when connecting directly to modem).

ICS is setup on both the computers as required and everything works fine. When my brother is not working on his computer and it is switched off, I cannot connect through the computer's second network card. I have to manually unplug the jointer and the small cross cable and connect the straight cable to the cable modem.

Then, on my computer, I use a MAC address changer so that my network card's address is the same as what my brother's 1st (onboard) network card has. I also have to manually change from the static IP of 192.168.0.2 to "Obtain and IP address automatically".

This way, I am able to connect both ways and with or without the other computer turned on.

Sometimes I have to do this switching thing more than once a day and it is a hassle to change the IP address every time. I had thought of adding another network card to my computer with a static IP and then I only need to switch the cable to the other card. But the other card (old, Winbond) isn't detected in my computer.

I know that netsh is a command that can change IP addresses based on a script, but do not know how to do this. Using the script, I can just double-click the file and the IP would be changed.

Can someone please tell me what I need to add to the script file and what exact netsh commands do I need for the above?

Regards,

Hi friends,
I have installed ubuntu 9.04 in that i have install DRBL package installtion is done correctly but when i run LANG=C sudo /opt/drbl/sbin/drblsrv -i
it gives
*****************************************************.
Hint! When a "yes or no" option is available, the default value is uppercase. E.g. (y/N) the default is "N", so when you press "Enter" without typing "Y or N" it will be as if you typed "N" and then "Enter". If you are not sure which option to choose just press "Enter" key.
*****************************************************.
*****************************************************.
Installing DRBL for Debian Linux...
*****************************************************.
Do you want to install the network installation boot images so that you can let the client computer install some GNU/Linux distributions (Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat Linux, Fedora Core, Mandriva, CentOS and OpenSuSE...) via a network connection? !!NOTE!! This will download a lot of files (Typically > 100 MB) so it might take a few minutes. If the client computer has a hard drive that you may install GNU/Linux onto, put a Y here. If you answer "no" here, you can run "drbl-netinstall" to install them later.
[y/N]
*****************************************************.
This GNU/Linux distribution uses one kernel to support SMP and non-SMP arch.
*****************************************************.
Do you want to use the serial console output on the client computer(s)?
If you do NOT know what to pick, say "N" here, otherwise the client computer(s) may show NOTHING on the screen!
[y/N]
*****************************************************.
It's Ubuntu as server, so generic kernel is available.
*****************************************************.
Which CPU architecture kernel do you want to assign for the DRBL client computer(s)?
0 -> i386 CPU architecture
1 -> i586 CPU architecture
2 -> Use the same architecture as this DRBL server
Note! Note Note! Note! Note! Note! Note!
NOTE!!! If the client computer(s) is not the same architecture as this server, please pick "0" or "1", otherwise your client computer(s) will NOT be able to boot.
If you use wrong architecture type kernel, the glibc and openssl package might use i686 or i386 while the kernel might use i686, i586, or i386, which might be not suitable for all your computer(s).
If you are not sure, "1" is recommended as this will still have good performance and compatibility.
