Just yesterday, Google announced that they will display personalized search results based on usage - regardless if you are signed in or not. So this means that they now track the search activity of All 'enabled' (by default) users and display customized search results. They are tracking 'signed-out' users via a cookie linked to the web browser. Users *can* opt out of "search customizations" but i'm confident that a majority of people will not...

This has already raised some privacy concerns over at Search Engine Land, but from an SEO perspective, I see it as another shift in favoritism toward the "white label" web destinations. For example, if you have a niche travel site but the end users mostly clicks on Expedia or Trip Advisor, it is likely that they will be displayed ahead of your site in the SERPs. Even though you might have the more relevant and resourceful website. I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts about this announcement...

Optimizing Your Web Site With SEO Organic Techniques

SEO organic methods take more work from the individual, but is a safer and, in the end, more effective way to optimize a web site for search engines. In a way, Organic SEO helps to keep Internet “pollution” to a minimum, so you’re also helping the virtual environment! In the following paragraphs, you’ll find a few easy ways to use this type of search engine optimization.

You’re no doubt familiar with the basic concepts of search engine optimization, but are you familiar with SEO organic methods? While search engine optimization is a very important aspect to any online business’ marketing plan, it’s become increasingly standardized and mechanized. Many SEO services and applications simply use the same basic plan to enhance a web site’s search engine rankings.

This has led to a lot of marketers using nasty search engine optimization methods to get results. These types of methods can be great for generating traffic, but in the end they make the Internet an uglier place. These methods, known as “Black Hat” SEO methods, are just a bad idea. Not only do they frustrate potential users of your web site, they may not even work forever…

You see, Google and other search engines are constantly looking for ways to defeat Black Hat SEO techniques. If their efforts are successful – and really it’s just a matter of time before they are – your time and money may be wasted. Why spend money on search engine optimization that could be useless in just a few months? Worse yet, search engines aren’t just knocking these sorts of sites down in rank; they’re totally removing them from search results.

Some of these Black Hat methods include using cheap labor or robots to perform a number of tasks. For instance, sometimes these services will sign up to tons of forums and or social networking sites and simply spam the link to a site everywhere possible. This is a definite annoyance for many webmasters, who end up with sites cluttered in meaningless links.

Link farms are another common type of Black Hat SEO. These sites are knockoffs are legit online directories, and are packed with links, many of which lead to very poor web sites. Some of them just link back and forth between each other and the link site, causing users to get lost in a sea of useless information. SEO organic techniques can be a great alternative to some of these Black Hat search engine optimization plans.

The main thing that people associate with web sites is their domain names. Domain names that feature the keywords that your website is targeting are a great start to organic SEO. Another, related, search engine optimization idea is to customize your web site’s title the same way: feature the keywords that your site targets. Both of these elements are factors that search engines use to rank a site.

There are many more ways to optimize a site with an SEO organic plan, but these tips will get you started.

News Story Death of piracy about as likely as death of porn

What might kill illegal downloading do you think? The long (and mostly ineffective) arm of the law perhaps, or maybe a sudden (and unlikely) feeling of overwhelming love for the poor music and movie industry?

According to the Global Web Index the answer could be simple and obvious: why bother downloading something illegally when you can watch it or listen to it perfectly legally using streaming media services?

YouTube has certainly showed a thirst for streaming videos, free of charge to the end user. The Global Web Index research reveals that 64% of Internet users watch video clips this way. Aha, you say, video clips are not the same as movies though. However, according to the report it seems that 31% are already watching full length TV and 'video programming' (whatever that might be) so perhaps the notion of streaming advertising supported full length blockbusters isn't a total non-starter.

Tom Smith, Managing Director of Trendstream who led the research says "Thanks to the rise of online services such as Spotify, Hulu, iPlayer and of course YouTube, the environment has been created where you can stream almost all the content you would ever want. If everything I want is available on demand, the concept of ownership is diminished" and adds "This is not only a threat to traditional packaged sales of music, TV and film, it will also kill off piracy. Why pirate when you can stream?".

It's all about the money, I hear you scream. Yet this research suggests that isn't actually the case with people downloading illegal media content are also driven by a desire for immediacy, being able to get that content as soon as it is available. Take the example of watching US TV shows in the UK, shows which are not legally available for months thanks to complex licensing issues.

Tom Smith concludes "This does not mean consumers won?t pay for their online content. When content is great and it can be accessed when and how people want, they will pay. Instead of taking legal action against isolated individuals, the content providers should take the opportunity to get their content online in a relevant format and at a fair price. If they do that, people will no longer to seek illegal alternatives. In a world of instant information and content, media owners are missing out on millions of dollars of revenue by restricting content through time delays, regional staggering or by relying purely on traditional media delivery".

Only time will tell, but history suggests that as is the case with online porn it will not be easy to rid the Internet of illegal downloaders and file-sharers.

The following letter was posted on Facebook by the founder, Mark Zuckerberg, in response to the site reaching 350 million users. Looks like Mark has some interesting plans for the future...

It has been a great year for making the world more open and connected. Thanks to your help, more than 350 million people around the world are using Facebook to share their lives online.

To make this possible, we have focused on giving you the tools you need to share and control your information. Starting with the very first version of Facebook five years ago, we've built tools that help you control what you share with which individuals and groups of people. Our work to improve privacy continues today.

Facebook's current privacy model revolves around "networks" — communities for your school, your company or your region. This worked well when Facebook was mostly used by students, since it made sense that a student might want to share content with their fellow students.

Over time people also asked us to add networks for companies and regions as well. Today we even have networks for some entire countries, like India and China.

However, as Facebook has grown, some of these regional networks now have millions of members and we've concluded that this is no longer the best way for you to control your privacy. Almost 50 percent of all Facebook users are members of regional networks, so this is an important issue for us. If we can build a better system, then more than 100 million people will have even more control of their information.

The plan we've come up with is to remove regional networks completely and create a simpler model for privacy control where you can set content to be available to only your friends, friends of your friends, or everyone.

We're adding something that many of you have asked for — the ability to control who sees each individual piece of content you create or upload. In addition, we'll also be fulfilling a request made by many of you to make the privacy settings page simpler by combining some settings. If you want to read more about this, we began discussing this plan back in July.

Since this update will remove regional networks and create some new settings, in the next couple of weeks we'll ask you to review and update your privacy settings. You'll see a message that will explain the changes and take you to a page where you can update your settings. When you're finished, we'll show you a confirmation page so you can make sure you chose the right settings for you. As always, once you're done you'll still be able to change your settings whenever you want.

We've worked hard to build controls that we think will be better for you, but we also understand that everyone's needs are different. We'll suggest settings for you based on your current level of privacy, but the best way for you to find the right settings is to read through all your options and customize them for yourself. I encourage you to do this and consider who you're sharing with online.

Thanks for being a part of making Facebook what it is today, and for helping to make the world more open and connected.

When you talking about SEO then one thing that you have keep in mind is Keywords. Keywords are an important part of SEO. Unfortunately, many website owners overdo it. Keywords are one of the most important tools in ranking high on search engines. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is essential for the success of almost every website. The majority of traffic to websites is brought in by search engines. In today's online world, your website doesn’t mean anything to anyone unless it can be found by your customers. Optimizing your site so it appears high in the search engines seems to be as much as an art form. So you realize how much SEO is important for websites

The controversy over whether people will pay for content online is a vexed question internationally. Here in the UK we've heard much about News Corp/News International owner Rupert Murdoch and his plans to charge for archived material. We now have a small local newspaper poised to charge people to read its wares.

As a jobbing journalist I think we're going to go through some painful times. The arguments are simple: on the one hand, people are accustomed to getting their daily newspaper or whatever free on the Internet. For the most part, bar the odd demand for unpaid membership (Financial Times in London I'm talking about you) there's no need to pay for anything you want to read if it's on your computer.

This is great for the reader or researcher and of course I use it myself. And because it's ingrained in my culture, I think nothing of paying for a physical newspaper when I could be getting the same thing free online. This is where the other side of the equation springs into life, of course. It goes: you thought this should be free why, exactly..? And then I turn it round from my point of view of the reader to my opinion as a writer and creator of this content: if people aren't prepared for it then can I justify charging for it? Well, given that I value my time and it's taken 20 years' experience to enable me to write this stuff, there's an easy answer to that one.

I suppose the real issue is going to be whether the publishing industry is going to be able to persuade people they ought to be paying for what they read. They've done so for centuries, the argument will run, so why do they suddenly expect it for nothing? The answer is of course that the same publishing industry itself has led them to expect this by precedent. For almost a decade we've been invited to browse what we like free of any charge.

It's not sustainable. It has to stop. But just how the publishers are going to unpick this particular web of their own making without looking like killjoys or bad guys is a problem to which there is no obvious answer.

I was pretty sure I wasn't the only person who cooked Thanksgiving dinner in front of, not a propped-up cookbook, but a laptop.

It turns out the New York Times agrees. In fact, the paper did an analysis of search terms by region and by time, to see what conclusions could be drawn.

First of all, many more people are using the Internet than they used to. In fact, the day or two before Thanksgiving is cooking sites' equivalent of Black Friday for cybershopping sites; for example, Allrecipes.com builds server capacity for the day before Thanksgiving, then uses only half of it the rest of the year. Similarly, Google searches for Thanksgiving recipes have climbed steadily, doubling from 2007 to 2008, the article indicated.

Even the venerable Butterball hotline has switched to Twitter.

Second, people search for different types of recipes depending on the time of day. "At Allrecipes.com, pie searches got the most action on Wednesday morning," the Times said. "But by 10 a.m., people began earnest hunts for sweet potato casserole and stuffing recipes. By noon, 100,000 people had searched for mashed potato recipes. The real outlier is gravy. If this Thanksgiving Day is anything like last year’s, most searches will slow by 10 a.m. But not gravy. That vexing cook’s kryptonite should peak about 3 p.m."

People also do different searches depending on where they are. In the Southeast, it's broccoli casserole. In North Carolina, it's sweet potatoes. In Mississippi, the second-most popular pie is pecan, while in Wisconsin, it's apple. And in the Midwest, it's cheese balls. "Do people in Indiana just forget how to make it each year, or are cheese balls winning new converts?" the article wondered.

I have to admit, though, that I didn't do any online searching this year. I use the same recipes I've used for several years -- which, it is true, I Googled in the first place (except for the pie crust recipe, which came from my mom) -- that I store on the computer in a single Word file, along with the canonical ingredient list for the grocery store.

I am the web developer for a fair-sized company, and they have tasked me with finding a new web host for their store. Their previous host was ValueWeb; they have proven unreliable. I've done web development before, but I've never set up an eCommerce solution. I'm a little nervous given that the online store is a large source of income for the company. I am, in a way, responsible for large sums of money in this transition.

I'm doing research to determine the best solution to our hosting problem. Our previous host handled eCommerce in a fairly abstract way--most of the technical stuff was hidden in awkward control panels. I'd prefer more low-level access that's still user friendly. I'm only somewhat familiar with PHP, but my programming background should allow me to learn quickly, if I need. The same is true of MySQL and similar technologies--I've worked with databases, just not MySQL specifically.

Honestly, though, I'm just not sure where to start. Should my eCommerce solution be separate from the general web hosting? Should I try building something myself? What do I need to know? Any help would be appreciated. I've been poking around Google and a few IT sites, but a little guidance will go a long way in focusing my research.

Thinking of looking for a flu shot while you're out shopping this weekend but don't know where to look?

There's an app (Google Maps) for that. Type in a location and it will show you locations in the area that offer flu shots, as well as their times -- and it will differentiate between seasonal flu and H1N1 vaccines, in case you need one and not the other.

The application isn't perfect. It seems to focus primarily on commercial providers of flu vaccines, such as drugstores, supermarkets, and department stores. It doesn't, however, provide information on vaccination clinics offered by local health districts -- though it does provide the name of the nearest health district, a link to flu information on its website, and suggests that users call the district for more information. It also doesn't seem to include medical providers such as doctors and clinics, unless, coincidentally, the doctors in all the cities I checked were out.

Its geographic range also appears to be fairly small; checking my own town found nothing, but didn't show possibilities in larger cities just 20 minutes away. There also doesn't seem to be a way to widen the range of the area in which the application looks.

But, it's a start, it's better than nothing, and if a particular area doesn't have commercial vaccine providers, users can get in contact with the area health district to get more information.

ok here goes ...Part 1

I recently seen a draft of the comptia bylaw that explains the certification in detail..however im suere im right about this .It states in a brief detail that the certification you recieve cretifies you on what you know... now if a cert does this and is true shouldnt a cert also provide information to back you on the physical aspects ofd the job as well
in Arizona here im asked by the city to get a license to perform the running of the cat 5 lines ( crazy I know ) but its all true
If Comptia had added the words to also include ( and to perform the duties within the realm of this certification) then im sure i could skip having the license at all.....

Part 2 ( I would like all technicians to do a little research on this subject in your state and city, to see if the Comptia certification holds ture where you live and also does this effect your work in your city .....

thank you all ..your the best

Ever wanted to see the International Space Station but didn't know when or how to look?

There's an app (Twitter) for that.

Start following @twisst and using the information in your profile, it will let you know when the International Space Station is scheduled to pass by you.

"So, every time the International Space Station is coming, Twisst sends the follower an alert throught Twitter," the website said. "It announces when ISS will pass, at the user's local time. Also Twisst tells whether it is a remarkable nice one or not - so how bright and how high the space station will be on that pass."

(The @twisst guys are from the Netherlands and some of the phrasing is a little odd. But it's better than my Dutch.)

The application doesn't yet use the recently announced Twitter geocoding feature, partly because the application predates the feature and partly because the majority of users have the geocoding feature turned off, a company representative said.

"ISS will cross the sky at your location at [time]! more details: http://twisst.nl/17460" is reportedly the message.

Unfortunately, I have to say reportedly, because although my local news showed the ISS passing overhead in my area last night -- they had film and everything -- @twisst didn't tell me. However, it's supposed to go by again tomorrow, so I'm willing to give it another chance.

@twisst currently has nearly 25,000 followers.

Today even in the UK we have seen the news about the American First Lady, Michelle Obama, and the scandal over Google searches throwing out a racist image.

Let's leave aside the revulsion over this - it's a daft schoolkid prank and should be treated with that sort of contempt. Google had a decision to make about removing it or not and opted to support freedom even when it offends - we have similar stuff happening in the UK, check the recent media coverage of the British National Party over here. No link deliberately, otherwise they might get clicks.

I'm not here to write about censorship issues, though. What concerns me more is the nature of SEO and how someone has manipulated a search so that their stupid cartoon gets to the top of a major search engine. It's clearly been done with so much sophistication, so much skill in the underlying code, that it actually gets listed above the stuff the real Michelle Obama is doing, or maybe her husband, like running the biggest country in the world during a massive economic crisis.

Annoyed? Yes I am. Regretful that the Obama family has been dragged into something like this? Yes, but I accept racism exists. Hopeful that Google, Microsoft and the others will move some goalposts so this sort of trash stays in the trashcan where it belongs rather than at the top of the search lists? You bet.

Here on Long Island, the local newspaper Newsday recently began a policy that if you are not a subscriber to Newsday and are not an Optimum Cable customer of their parent company, Cablevision, you will have to pay $5 per week to access the newspaper's website.
I think this is a case of a dying newspaper (Newsday has been losing readership and subscribers at a steady rate over the last few year) owned by a company that is notorious for jacking up the rates on their cable services because they are the only cable provider on LI, using e-commerce to try to drive business to the brick & mortar side of the business. As there are many things wrong with Newsday and the parent company, I cannot see this being a successful strategy.

But if they were a better run company with better content and a better reputation, does anyone think a policy like this would work?

My thanks to @girlygeekdom on Twitter for highlighting what must be the most surreal Internet marketing plan ever - British girl band the Sugababes are being used to promote Windows 7. There is a website called 'sugababeslovewindows7' to announce it.

I'm as flummoxed as anyone by this. Let's take to one side the fact that I'm a 44 year old man and not at all in the Sugababes' market - what exactly is this trying to say about the brand? That it's easy to use? OK, check - but surely it's no longer acceptable to dismiss young females as incapable of mastering difficult stuff. I know, I have a nine year old daughter and she already speaks more Spanish than I do.

So maybe it's supposed to be trendy? OK, maybe...but it's an operating system, guys, not an item of clothing or new dessert. Mac OS is arguably more fashionable but that's how you get about 5 per cent of the market. This stuff needs to be fashion-proof. Perhaps they think it's going to appeal to a particular demographic? Again I see no reason it should do so; a good OS should ideally be suited to everyone (and compared to Windows Vista, Windows 7 is doing a good job on that score).

I'm the last to blame the Sugababes, in case anyone's wondering. I have no doubt Microsoft is paying plenty for their promotional services and it's not in me to wish less income on anyone. It's Microsoft's view I find completely bewildering. I suppose coming from the same company that chose the Rolling Stones' 'Start Me Up' for the launch of Windows 95 only to have to edit it so the line 'You make a grown man cry' wasn't heard, this isn't a surprise. But even so...a girl band?

For those of you outside of the Long Island, NY area, you may have missed a good one. It seems that the latest teen music sensation, Justin Bieber (who's fame is based on viral youtube videos of himself singing songs by Usher and Ne-Yo, which led to a twitter campaign by his fans to get him a record contract), was scheduled to appear at Justice girls clothing store at the Roosevelt Field Mall last Friday for an autograph signing and mini-concert. An expected crowd of a few hundred turned into a crowd of 3,000 and the Nassau County Police stepped in. First they canceled the appearance and directed a record company exec to contact the singer to tell him not to show. They then direct the same record company exec to send a tweet to all of the fans in attendance to let them know about the change in plans. The exec refused, a minor disturbance occurred, an officer was injured and the record company exec was arrested for endangering the welfare of a child, obstruction of governmental administration, reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, all misdemeanors and all due to his failure to tweet. The link is below to the original story in Newsday. The exec has plead not guilty.

In 1968, a teacher named Jane Elliott performed a seminal experiment with her class of third-graders. Wishing to teach them about prejudice, she told them that kids with blue eyes were superior to those with brown eyes, gave the blue-eyed kids all sorts of privileges, and made the brown-eyed kids second-class citizens. Soon enough, the kids had internalized the differences, with the blue-eyed kids picking on the brown-eyed ones.

Now, students across Canada and the U.S. have taken it upon themselves to set up a similar scenario, except with prejudice against redheaded kids, inspired by a four-year-old South Park episode.

Four redheaded children in Los Angeles-area schools were attacked on Friday, based on a Facebook group declaring it to be "Kick a Ginger Day," according to an article in the Los Angeles Times, while two dozen children in an Ontario, Canada, school were suspended after a similar incident and other students in the Vancouver area reported being kicked as many as 80 times during the day.

In the U.S., it was not considered to be a hate crime, but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are considering classing it as such.

Facebook has since taken the group down, saying it had not been aware of it, but a cached version indicated that it had more than 4,500 fans.

In fact, at this point there are now eleven pages and more than 180 groups, the vast majority of which were purportedly against Kick a Ginger Day.

What was particularly interesting about Elliott's experiment is when she turned the tables and said that, actually, brown-eyed kids were superior to blue-eyed kids. While the kids fairly quickly managed to switch their social positions, the brown-eyed kids didn't treat the blue-eyed kids as badly as they'd been treated.

News Story Is Google Feeling Heat From Microsoft?

If the new Google interface design is any indication, it appears that Google might actually be feeling a little heat, or at least some influence, from Bing. Danny Sullivan, who has been covering search for years, had a post in his Search Engine Land blog last week about the new interface overhaul Google is undertaking for its core search product. When I looked at the screen shot that Sullivan provided, it's hard not to see the Bing influence here.

The question is what does it mean? Well, first of all, it means competition is good for consumers, a point I've been making since I started this blog. Bing's clean interface is one of its core strengths and it didn't go unnoticed by Google. But does that mean Google feels threatened by Bing? Not necessarily.

How Do You Generally Search?

I don't know about you, but when I conduct a search I generally start with Google. I have my search box in Firefox set to Google by default. I enter my search criteria, press Enter, and usually I find what I need in the first several results. I don't tend to look much further, and I don't look at the other stuff like content filters. If I do a News search, I might click a date filter in the left column, but beyond that, I don't tend to use any of the other tools that show up in the interface.

For someone like Sullivan, who is a great blogger, reporter and search guru; he's always paying attention to this stuff because it's what he does. But for the average searcher, most of the extraneous stuff is just that. It's nice to have on the oft chance you need it, but if the search engine is doing its job, chances are you very rarely (or never) use the bells and whistles. Bing has some nice tools for filtering or narrowing down your search criteria, but I wonder how many people use them?

What's Wrong With Using Google?

Last week, I had a long exchange on Twitter with Disa Johnson, who runs the site Search Return.com. Johnson suggested to me that Google had lost its way. For her, Google wasn't a search engine, so much as an ad revenue generator. Further, she didn't like that they had spread out into Gmail and other tools, much less a browser and an operating system.

For me, however, I use Google because the search engine works--pure and simple. It gives me the answers I want quickly and efficiently most of the time. I also use Google Docs, Gmail, Google Reader and several other Google tools. I do so because the tools are free, convenient, and as a friend of mine says, "It's Google. They are going to constantly improve it."

Should Google Worry About Bing?

Generally, I don't think Google has a lot to worry about where its core search product is concerned. They consistently control anywhere from 65-70 percent of the search market, but there are warning signs on the horizon. It appears that Microsoft and News Corp are in talks to implement at least parts of the plan I outlined in my recent post, Mark Cuban's Plan to Kill Google. The jury is still out whether that will matter because as one commenter pointed out in my post, while News Corp (or any site) can block the spiders from finding it, it won't stop others who link to that site. Others pointed out that if you pulled out the top 100 or top 1000 sites from Google and moved them to Microsoft, others would gladly take their place. Neither does it mean that there would be a mass exodus from Google to Bing.

But Johnson thinks users are more fickle than that. She believes it could turn on a dime. I'm not so sure I agree, but it is clear from the new interface design, that Bing is at least having some influence on the Google design team, and for us as consumers, we can rejoice. As long as Microsoft acts as a check on Google and pushes them to make improvements to the product, the better off we will all will be, but extrapolating that into a massive Google meltdown, is to me, taking it all a bit too far. Google isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Rupert Murdoch is not a stupid man, his business empire is evidence of that. For anyone to become a media mogul requires smarts, but those smarts seem to be deserting Murdoch as he continues to play the fool and deny that old monetisation methods do not work for the new online model that has so totally embraced news media.

Gord Hotchkiss over at Searchnewz says "Rupert Murdoch's rantings are so out of touch that they're bordering on lunacy, or, at a minimum, stupidity. He's mad that his old revenue model isn't working anymore" and I couldn't agree more.

When Mike Butcher at TechCrunch broke the news that Microsoft might be trying to fund a move to persuade newspapers to move from Google to Bing, a few of us blinked not so much with surprise but more a feeling of inevitability. It took a while for the rest of the world to catch up after the Financial Times published a story (behind a paywall and 9 days later, ironically enough) stating that Microsoft had discussions involving News Corp "being paid to de-index its news websites from Google". It's also something Ron Miller, right here on DaniWeb, beat the old media to the punch with if you broaden the net a little and excuse the pun.

This all comes off the back of a Sky News interview with Rupert Murdoch during which he pointed out that readers who see News Corp news after arriving from a search page are of little value as far as its advertisers are concerned. Murdoch took the bait offered up by the Sky political editor when asked why he didn't make his sites invisible to Google in that case and responded with a curt "I think we will".

Murdoch is, as you would expect from a media mogul, looking for ways to make news pay. He has already proposed a highly controversial 'paywall' behind which premium news content should be made available only to those willing to pay for the privilege. You can do your own search for 'Murdoch Paywall' to see what the web thinks of that. My view on that, as a former Sunday Times columnist and having had some involvement in the first News Corp online venture (Delphi UK) is to say OK, go ahead. Market forces will prevail and if your news content is really worth it, Mr Murdoch, people will indeed pay and your media empire will not crumble and die before your very eyes.

Unfortunately I think that, in all honesty, you still don't get this new media Internet thing, and your advisors are not being helpful in illuminating your understanding it would seem. Otherwise why would you be demanding that headline link aggregators such as NewsNow stop linking to your stories?

The copyright infraction argument being used is a spurious one, linking is not stealing and in fact it is quite the opposite. Instead of reselling your content, Mr Murdoch, headline linking aggregators are pushing hundreds of thousands of readers to your stories, on your servers, every day. Now, if you cannot figure out a way to make money from this influx of readers then that is as a result of shortcomings in your business vision and should not be blamed on the very services which are delivering your readers to you.

There was an interesting post on Twitter over the weekend in which someone mused over whether Murdoch might start turning his attention to bloggers and try closing them down over fair use and news linking next. My immediate thought was it would be a silly thing to do, after all most newspaper journalists use blogs as an information source these days, and stories often break on the blogs first and are then 'discovered' by the newspapers and presented as their own scoop.

Which kind of brings us full circle back to Mike Butcher at TechCrunch breaking the Microsoft meeting story more than a week before the old media hacks got hold of it.

However, I am not quite done with this rant, because there is one more blog that is deserving of a mention here and that is TechDirt which has done a wonderful job in erecting a counter-argument to the news aggregators as parasites position in a story entitled "A Look At All The Sites Owned By Rupert Murdoch That 'Steal' Content" which examines Murdoch owned sites which appear to aggregate content from other sites and rely upon the fair use argument that Murdoch seems to think should be dismissed by the courts.

I'm guessing that at some point soon the tablets will kick in, the sabre will stop being rattled, and Murdoch will realise that cutting his hands off because he has a headache isn't going to solve anything. Just as cutting off Google isn't going to result in a sudden deluge of folk rushing to subscribe to News Corp content when they can simply use Google to find someone else reporting the same news, for free.

If you've ever had Google Maps literally send you up the river or down a sidewalk, you may have wondered whether the company ever actually sees the areas it maps.

Now, it does, through an increasing number of volunteers who make corrections and add more detail to maps, according to an article in the New York Times.

Google has stopped using commercial databases such as Tele Atlas, choosing instead to use freely available government databases, as well as input from users. "[W]e've worked directly with a wide range of authoritative information sources to create a new base map dataset," according to the Google Earth and Maps blog. "In our experience, these organizations that create the data do the best job of keeping it accurate and up-to-date.

Even Tele Atlas itself is starting to incorporate input from users, though it does not rely on it, the New York Times said. Beyond that, organizations such as WikiMapia and OpenStreetMap are open-source maps created by users.

However, users have been unable to determine the existence of a U.K. town called Argleton, though it is described in Google Maps, according to a different New York Times story.

"When Mr Bayfield reached Argleton – which appears on Google Maps between Aughton and Aughton Park – he found just acres of green, empty fields," the New York Times reported.

Paper maps often include minor imaginary streets to enable the map copyright holders to see whether their maps are being published elsewhere, and it is speculated that Argleton fulfills the same role for Google Maps, though Google said it was an error. However, though the company said the town would be removed, it is still there as of today.

You know you've established your brand when its name becomes a verb (for example to 'Google' something). A company called PostRank might hope the same holds true for adjectives, as in "What's your PostRank?" The company hosts an ingenious service that tracks the millions of Web postings that appear every day and ranks them based on the tweets, Diggs, reddits, and other linkback activities that follow.

These activities, which the company refers to as "engagements," are a better indicator of the value of a piece, according to PostRank co-founder and VP of development Jim Murphy. "We're looking at what people do, as opposed to what people say. And that's an important difference," he said in a phone interview yesterday. "We're not asking you what is good or bad content--and to vote up or down. If I use delicious, where I'll save a bookmark that I want to refer to later, we record that as an interesting engagement." PostRank has agreements with 18 major social networks, and looking to add all the time, Murphy said.

Founded in 2007 as AideRSS, the company started by developing a way to qualify the huge number of articles fed into RSS readers every day. "The engagement generated by each story has a ranking function that we plug into [RSS] readers. So of these 500 themes, which generate let's say 700 or 800 stories a day, [we present] the 50 you really need to look at," based on how many other people have thought enough of the piece to spread the word. "Don't read every story that's published, just read what matters and what is generating a lot of conversations." The free service is available now.

Last month the company unveiled PostRank Analytics, a fee-based service that resells its engagement data "out the back door to news aggregators, marketing and PR companies and everybody you can imagine," as Murphy put it. A Youtube video shows you how it works. In essence, the service lets you track, in real time, who's clicking on (thanks to a link with Google Analytics), linking to, commenting on and tweeting about your postings. You can even drill down to the individual users and contact them directly. "When you're publishing a story, you're not necessarily trying to convince people to buy a book, download a white paper or do anything. Instead you're tying to figure out what is resonating--which topics, authors and tone--and who's in your audience, how are they responding."

Bing has a better conversion ratio as compared to Google. However, Bing gets low traffic share as compared to Google, but if you get some click from Bing then it will turn in lead ( on most of the occasions).

The best thing about Bing is that it has a better user interface and gives you a feel of FRESHNESS every single day.

Instead of focusing your optimization entirely on Google, one must concentrate on gaining rankings on other search engines including Bing and Yahoo.

Google Click Fraud rate (on PPC) is far much higher as compared to Bing/Yahoo.

Bing gives preference to few parameters listed below:-

1) Domain Age - Bing gives preference to the age of your domain. Google also gives preference to domain age.

2) On-Page/Off-Page Optimization - Bing gives more preference to On-Page optimization. However, Google gives more preference to off-page optimization. It is best to carefullly do on-page optimization and make sure your keyword density does not go overboard.

Among various on-page optimization factors, TITLE is the most important one. If your keywords are listed in the TITLE then you will get higher rankings on both Google and Bing.

We're already heard about people being fired for calling in sick and then posting on Facebook.

Now a woman has lost her insurance.

According to CBCNews, Nathalie Blanchard, 29, has been on leave from her job at IBM for the past year and a half after she was diagnosed with major depression. She was receiving monthly sick-leave benefits from Manulife, her insurance company. When the payments stopped, she called the insurance company and was told she was "available to work, because of Facebook."

The insurance agent reportedly described several pictures Blanchard had posted, including ones showing her at a Chippendales bar show, at her birthday party, and at the beach — evidence that she is no longer depressed.

Blanchard said she had taken the vacation on her doctor's advice and that she had informed the company of the trip.

In addition, Blanchard said she didn't understand how Manulife accessed her photos, because her Facebook profile is locked and only people she approves can look at what she posts. Ironically, it was due to pressure from the Canadian government that Facebook recently revised its privacy policy. Online speculation is that one of the woman's coworkers at IBM may have turned her in.

4. From the result that google provide, try to find long tail keywords 3 or more words, at from 800 - 5000 search per month is okay but if you see more higher searches you can get it..put it on the excel to organize.
5. Time to check your keyword for competition,it is the critical part of the keyword research.
6. Go to google.com , be sure that you activate your seoquake, then start searching for the keywords that you get from google keyword tool. After seeing the results, using the SEOQuake plugins check the PR of the top 10 search result. If all the top 10 results is pr 0 or n/a for sure it is easy to target the keywords... You only needs 5-20 back links for you to be on the first page.

It is hard to find the keywords that you will target that has a PR 0 n/a in the top 10 results, But if you gather it all, it's just like you are mining gold.

Here's a switch. Instead of newspapers trying to protect the identities of the people posting to their websites, the newspaper is the one outing them.

As described by editor Kurt Greenbaum of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, someone posted a vulgar word in the paper's online commenting system, and re-posted it after a newspaper staffer deleted it.

"I deleted it, but noticed in the WordPress e-mail alert that his comment had come from an IP address at a local school," Greenbaum reported. "So I called the school. They were happy to have me forward the e-mail, though I wasn’t sure what they’d be able to do with the meager information it included."

The school managed to track down the offending (literally) poster, who turned out to be a school employee, and when confronted, the person resigned.

Since then, however, the incident has resulted in a great deal of discussion about whether Greenbaum acted responsibly, especially for a newspaper.

"[I]t's still troubling that a journalist with 27 years of experience didn't question whether it was wise to out one of the paper's readers -- a decision that certainly seems to violate the paper's own policies," noted The Daily Online Examiner. "The site's privacy policy states: "We will not share individual user information with third parties unless the user has specifically approved the release of that information. In some cases, however, we may provide information to legal officials.""

The blog went on to say that Greenbaum denied having revealed individual user information, and made fun of him for apparently not realizing what an IP address was.

"Am I the only one who thinks that doing this goes way beyond the normal course of editorial behaviour?" wrote media blogger Matthew Ingram. "[T]here is no way that I would contact someone’s workplace about a comment unless they had done something extremely egregious — such as making death threats, or repeatedly making abusive comments."

The Greenbaum case stands in stark contrast to other examples. Earlier this year, another news site fought a court order demanding that it reveal the identity of anonymous people posting to its website. Instead, the Maryland Court of Appeals reversed the lower-court ruling, and issued guidelines for how such requests should be made in the future. Another news aggregator site is fighting a similar attempt in Texas.

Several people have suggested that, in the future, Greenbaum's paper should moderate comments instead.

Social Networking Traffic

On my site I provide users the ability to share content on Social Networking Sites and I advertise this in the following order:

Facebook (14,364)
MySpace (100)
Twitter (69)
Digg (1,037)
StumbleUpon (6,102)
Reddit (48)
Delicious (6)

On my site I provide users the ability to share content on Social Networking Sites and I advertise this in the following order:
Twitter (69)
Digg (1,037)
StumbleUpon (6,102)
Reddit (48)
Delicious (6)

The numbers in parentheses are the amount of traffic I got from each site over the past 30 days. I get great traffic from Facebook, Stumbleupon, and Digg, but virtually nothing from the remaining. Is it worth ditching sites like myspace, twitter, reddit, and delicious, and advertising the rest more prominently?? What sites do you think are the most important to target?

Furthermore, although I do well with StumbleUpon, I feel the majority of their traffic is driven from their toolbar, so I'm not sure it's worth advertising it. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. For a better understanding you can visit my site by adding a ".net" after my username.

Thanks!
