Sounds like the 2nd pc is booting off the hd from the original system. You'll have to go into the bios and tell it not to boot from the slaved hd.

bring up your task manager by hitting ctrl+alt+delete. On the Application tab, click the new task button, and browse to c:\windows, and select explorer.exe. This will bring up your desktop.

Try reinstalling Windows over the current copy. Once that comes up you should be able to back up your data, format the drive, and install a clean Windows environment.

Those links appear to redirect to another site, which is probably related to the problem. Usually I just reset IE settings. Go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab>Reset IE Settings.

A bad hard drive can sometimes keep a pc from posting. If it is in a caddy and is easily removable, I'd pull it and see if the PC can post.

I would recommend that you make sure Vista is up to date and get the latest drivers from HP. If your laptop is a year old, it probably has some of the earlier flakey Vista drivers.
