okay but the ADO.NET book by microsoft press is the best. Loads on databases, but assumes you know VB beforehand (reading the "vb step by step" book in the same series is sufficient)

Is it a real core 2?, because some pentium Ds, and some core 1 and core solos lack the 64 bit extensions

I got 64 bit debian running fine on a late-model pentium 4 HT 3ghz

if both are cable selec, the first one on the cable will automatically set itself to master, and the second one on teh cable to slave

and yeah, use 2003 drivers. XP 64 doesnt actually run xp, its server 2003 - server bits

pcs are better for gaming (laptop video cards suck)
pcs are better for upgraders

laptop is better for school as portable
