maybe you need to delete all your partitions and then repartition before you format. do a web search on the ultimate boot disk & get someone to burn it onto a cd for you.it has all the tools you need.

Sometimes in aggrevation the ide cables can be ruined. Also, sometimes motherboards will lose function in one or the other, primary or secondary. It takes patience as all computers may be different...

if you're not in need of win 98, use the ranish partition manager which can be downloaded free online and delete the fat partition then change the boot on line one to standard & hit f2 & reboot.

If you tried formatting from dos & it didn't work cause maybe you have an ntfs partition & you are trying to format with a FAT format disk. Do a web search on Ultimate boot disk or ultimate boot cd....
