wrong format _external hard disk

hi everyone
my friend has an external hard disk, it has many information on it
he make a mistake so that he had an incomplete format
and now
when he connects the external hard disk to his computer
the message apears which says to use the disk must format it
but the hard disk is not fully formatted and it has some useful data
is there any idea to use the data without formatting it?
