Hello again!

Over the last few days, strange things have been happening. I've run my Ad Aware SE, my Spybot, I use Firefox when I browse, but I'm still having trouble. I'm connected to the internet, because I can talk on AIM, but when I try to browse with either Firefox or IE (Backup), the pages won't display. I have been unplugging my modem, then plugging it back in, and this seems to be a temporary fix. A few minutes later, I can't browse again, it can't find any sites even though I'm connected with cable modem.

Just now, I couldn't get to this site, but I could get to others. A few minutes later, I tried, and now I can get to this site to post this for help. So, hopefully this log will help getting everything up and running like it should again.

Download winxp_dnscache.reg and double click to install it to your registry. It will stop the caching of failed dns entries.
Set a system restore point before doing it, or export your registry for a backup.
That is only a precaution . I have run the reg file on my PC with no ill effects.

Thanks again, Crunchie! You've saved me so much already, sorry to keep messing things up . Don't know how it happens, ugh, I try to be careful.

I noticed that new DL of Hijack this last night after I posted, but I wasn't able to get to the site to DL it because of the problems I mentioned before. It let me DL it today, so I just went ahead and posted the new log for you instead of doing the things you mentioned in the above post to make sure I do everything I need after I had the updated Hijack log.

Do you use Viewpoint Mananger? It is spyware related and I would recommend removing it. Here is one opinion:

You can use Google to search for more inofrmation before you decide whether to keep it or not.

Remember to reboot and post a new log after following Crunchie's instructions.

You know I've always wondered what Viewpoint Manager was. I was cleaning out old programs and saw it in the add/remove programs and I thought it was weird, had no idea what it was, so I left for exactly that reason.

I went to add/remove programs and removed the Viewpoint Manager. Is this enough? Or do I need to find some registry keys or other things related to it that are bad?

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Well, those system processes for Viewpoint weren't present in normal or Safe Mode, and the C:\Program Files\Viewpoint wasn't present either.

Also, other than Spybot and Ad Aware SE and Spywareguard and Spyware Blaster and CWShredder, are there any other Anti Spyware programs that I should download? Anything else I could use to help protect me better?

- Believe it or not, people are reporting Good Things about Microsoft's new Anti-Spyware utility. It's only a beta release right now, but you might want to give it a try.

- There are couple of anti-virus programs out there which are keeping a few steps ahead of Norton/Symantec and McAfee in terms of "spyware" detection and removal:

KAV: http://www.kaspersky.com/products
AVG: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1

- Tighten up some of Internet Explorer's default settings to make it more secure. Some info on that can be found here: http://tomcoyote.org/ieoe.php

- Install a stand-alone firewall program such as Zone Alarm or Kerio Personal Firewall, or purchase the "Internet Security" packages offered by Symantec and McAfee.

- In addition to SpywareGuard & SpywareBlaster, install IE-SPYAD as an addtitional measure of protection.

- Obviously, make sure to keep your system current on all of the latest Windows critical fixes by using Windows' Automatic Update feature.


In terms of the Viewpoint software: you might find that it returns at some point in the future. The software is used with online multimedia content, so if you visit a site which uses that type of content, the program may get reinstalled.

As DMR said, Viewpoint gets installed without the users knowledge -- one sign that it's up to no good.
