I have a Presario 7110US with 1GB RAM AMD Athlon 1.33GHz and 2 Hard Drives. I had a similar problem. I would leave my machine on so I could access it remotely when I traveled for business so it was on for several weeks at a stretch. Everything was fine for several years. Then recently it started shutting down at night time. And unlike a normal power outage, it would not automatically restart. Then it started happening more frequently, until it would only stay on only a few minutes. I cleared out the dust from inside thinking it was overheating but the time got shorter and shorter. Eventually I could not start the machine at all. I read your thread and decided to buy an identical Power Supply from Compaq, thinking it would be the first step in a long story like yours, but hey presto, it worked! Everything is fine now. I should mention that I did refresh the CMOS by removing the battery for a while, but the system picked up all the extra memory and HDD correctly. So you were right to start with the Power Supply.
