Help hard drive question

  #1
Jun 26th, 2004
hello,
i am trying to install a western digital 40 GB 7200rpm hard drive into a gateway 2000 p5-100. the gateway originally came with a western digital caviar 31000. on the top of that hard drive it reads AT compatible 1083.8MB.
i was able to install windows 98 on the 40 GB on my other computer and tried to install it into the gateway. the gateway doesnt recognize the drive.
does anyone know why? im almost out of hair.....:o

How is the hard drive jumpered? Are any other drives connected on the same IDE cable?

hi. the 40 GB is installed with the caviar 31000. i jumpered the 40 GB as the master and the 31000 as slave. they work fine if setp up by themselves, but together on the same IDE cable, they do not get recognized.
