ALSO: I know norton uses a lot of resources, any suggestions on a antivirus that is very good and doesn't use a lot of resources.

Fix this one with hijackthis:
O9 - Extra button: Internet Radio by Endicosoft.com - {1F958B09-3312-7f0e-9723-4C1324C57B20} - C:\Program Files\Internet Radio\Radio.exe (file missing)

Autostarts - you don't have many but Norton/Symantec. Leave the NVidia stuff if you are a gamer. You do not need to autostart Adobe Reader ....fix this one:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
Actually, dump bloated Adobe Reader n get Foxit, or another sim wee fast reader, same features [Adobe builds to 100+MB on disc, Foxit only 5MB...]
I use AVG AV, slick as.

For a general user the first three are usually more than sufficient to make your Vista faster. The remaining are some more which a tweak enthusiast may wish to consider. Utilities like WinPatrol or Tune-Up Utilities can help you in most of the cases.

1. Restrict the no. of start-ups. Why have programs starting up when you dont really use them. Even those you use can always be started manually by clicking on the. I personally prefer not to have ANY starups. I click on my Internet Defense Suite manually, before connecting to the Internet. So decide for yourself which one's you really need as start-ups.

2. Disable services which one may not require. For example, if your pc is a stand-alone one, there may be sevral services which you can disable or switch over to manual mode. Auto-starting and closing down of services takes time & resources. These can be saved. BlackViper's Vista Service Configurations is an excellent guide to follow.

3. Reducing visual effects (eye candy).
Right-click on “My Computer” > Properties > Advanced > Performance-Settings > Visual Effects > Adjust for best performance > Apply > OK.
To allow the themes and the glass effects, you may have to check on the boxes : enable transperant glass and use visual styles; this way atleast the spirit of Vista will be preserved- else be prepared for a really bland Vista ! Use your discretion. I know disabling all can actually negate the purpose of 'eye-friendly' Vista.

^ I concur. replace adobe pdf reader with foxit. if u find norton resource
kasperky or nod32 are the lightest on resources.

I noticed that I have windows messenger running...is it safe to disable that with hijack. I never use it but I don't want it affecting other things running.

Now, this depends a bit upon you. You can "remove" W messenger or simply prevent it from starting - up to you.
Go CP, add/remove pgms > set pgm access, defaults - hit custom button, make your selections [ie press use my current messenger [which of course can be none if you have not one set up].
To "remove" messenger, >add/remove w components, uncheck messenger. If you use Outlook Express, which does use messenger if available, use this link to remove messenger :
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger_remove.htm
Note: messenger does not get deleted by these methods; I don't know if that is possible. But it won't start.

Do you have both a norton subscription and zone alarm? having two security suites running at the same time can lead to problems, and will slow your computer's performance down.

I have norton antivirus and zonealarm pro.....I just use zone alarm for the firewall and norton for the obvious. Do I need to run both for protection or any suggestions on which to run?

simple -- esp the time for option
log off -- shut down - restart To pop up

if you wait for more than a minute

then try -

=== remove NORTON (norton is strange on my XP, can't even install it properly -- I bought a paid version -- wasted !! == don't even have norton control panel, nor I cannot uninstall it)

-- do not install window xp upgrade pack -- old ones (few years ago ones are fine )

== one big trick I learn, UNINSTALL every IE that you can find on computer -- run , much faster, but for a while , until IE resurface,

but generally, these methods are safe and GOOD
