External Hard Drive Advice
![]() |
Hi,
I'm looking to increase my storage and I'm looking into an external hard drive. Just wondering what people recommend and if they have had any problems with heat?
I've tried a hard drive enclosure with one of my internal HD and but stops working when it gets hot.
I'm going to be transferring my CD collection to digital. I will be accessing the hard drive to play the music so it will get regular use.
A laptop USB external hard drive would be ideal but I wonder if it will be up to the task.
Thanks for your opinions,

There seems to be 2 factors:
The reliability of the case. Metal cases cool better, and some have cooling fans. Cheap enclosures seem to fail often.
Drive reliability. Lots of opinions, but I think it's a crapshoot.
My WD drive has always been trouble free.
I've got a Toshiba 2.5" drive in a free case that's been banged around and carried in my truck for a couple of years, and it's always been reliable
