I am new to webdesigning and I went from Front Page to Dreamweaver. I am having the hardest time creating links to adobe files that are "outside the site root". I have read 3 books and I am having a very hard time grasping what I am doing wrong and how to make it work. I need to create links to files on my computer that are in Adobe format. When I preview in IE or firefox it works but when I upload to the server, it shows File not found on the actual website. Please help!

You cannot link to files on your computer from a server and expect others to be able to access them. You need to place those files on the server too and link to those. That should work for you.
