URL address is being highjacked

  #1
Jul 3rd, 2008
I am using windows XP and I am having probles with the Internet Explorer Address Tool Bar as when I do a search , usualy with Google when I click on one of the search results it initialy displays the correct URL address but then this changes to a copletly wrong address and I finish up with a web page I do not want, usuly a search engine I have not heard of or a gambling site. I use AVG antivirus and this finds no problems on my system but my automatic update seems to have stopped working too and can not update AVG to check for any new virus. When I select one of my favourite I get the page I wat but on occasions this page seems to get Hijacked and the URL address changes to another address.

Any suggestion, this happened yeterday

Looks like you have some type of spyware / malware. You should probably start by backing up anything important to another source, this is a preventive measure in case what is on the computer is more difficult to remove than it will be worth or you might be better off reloading instead.

Then you should follow the initial steps in the malware / virus sections. In particular running hijack this is going to be very important to anyone trying to help you.

Other things to note are any toolbars that are installed, this sounds like it is a "My Websearch" toolbar or one of it's cousins. When you are looking at things look also at the: Tools ----> Internet Options ----> Programs ----> Manage Add-Ons. Look at the programs that are running these will give more indications for what is running inside IE that can be causing these problems.
I have never learned so many things as in those times I have been wrong.

Sounds very much like a malware problem.

Download a copy of HijackThis and save it to your desktop in a folder. Do a scan and save the HijackThis logfile. Do not remove anything. Post your log file here. Link to HijackThis:

Sorry for the late reply i haven't been checking back.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

1) Restart your computer

2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (Repeatedly).

3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear

4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan". Place checks next to the following entries if still present in the code and close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked".
