Is there a safe way to remove windows apps and certain

Is there a safe way to remove windows apps and certain components eg IE7, defender, firewall, mail, mediaplayer, messenger etc on windows Vista

I have used vLite, I was just wondering if there are other ways to remove these components on an installed version of windows vista
