Microsoft excel 2000 & XP PRO

I recently got pc running XP Pro. I have loaded my old Microsoft Windows Excel. I can creat and use new worksheets, but when I want to open a worksheet created with old system that had Windows 2000, I get error stating that the file I am openning is the wrong format. Any help would be appreciated
