Hi,

Last night I picked up something nasty that has hijacked both my browsers (IE and firefox). When I click a link in a search engine (including but not limited to google), I get a new tab (or window in IE) which sends me to some other site going via go.google, or similar. I also get a connection error when I try to access any antivirus-related sites, and I don't know if this is related, but my sophos antivirus service autorun on start up was disabled, and running a scan returns a couple of errors, and no scan results (when I know for a fact it always brings up this 'potentially unwanted application' that I've been trying to get rid of for ages).

Here's my hijack this log--if anyone can help me out with this, it would be so appreciated!!

See if you can do the following;
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

If you cannot do that in normal mode then see if you can do it with Safe Mode with Networking. If that is not possible then if you have another computer you can use try the download on it, but it to a disk or flash drive and bring it back to the infected computer and install and run it.
If you are able to run it then post back here with the log.

I'd already got the software, but I don't think I did a full scan, and I definitely didn't save a log. I'm running it now, and will post the log asap. (edit... wait, it saves them automatically, right? Sorry... this is doing my head in, and I'm slightly confused... will see what I've got saved...)

OK, I checked, I didn't do a full scan... I'm running one now, though it's looking like it will take a while! Will post the log as soon as it's done.

Yeah, they take awhile. It does save the log automatically. If you cannot find it open the program and click the Logs tag, they all should be there and they are dated and the time is listed also if you ran more than one on any particular day.
Be sure to have it fix everything found.

Happy I could help! Looks good. Though you do need to update your Java as the version you are running is WAY out of date. Go HERE Download the Offline Install file and save it to the desktop.
Once you have done that then go to Add/Remove and Uninstall all previous versions of Java. After the Uninstall is complete go to the Java Install file on the desktop and click it to install the newest version. Once the Install is finished then go back to that link above and on the right side you will see Verify Now. Click that to be certain the install went as planned.
