SEO (Search engine optimization) means ensuring that your Web pages are accessible to search engines and are focused in ways that help improve the chances they will be found.

In other words, it is the process of improving the amount of traffic and the quality of traffic to a website from search engines using algorithmic search results for keywords.

OR

Search engine optimization is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” ,”organic” or “algorithmic” search results for targeted keywords.

Earlier a site is presented in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS) or the higher it ranks, the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of searches, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

For increasing a site’s relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for.

SEO efforts may involve :-

* Site’s coding, presentation, and structure
* Fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site.

Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing. It uses methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove them from their indices.

MYTHS ABOUT SEO

Misconceptions about search engine optimization are common.

1. The most common is that once a site is built and submitted to the search engines, heavy traffic is on its way.
2. Another is that when making a submission to each engine, a site will be registered immediately and will stay listed with that engine for as long as it is in operation.

What people need to know is that search engine optimization, which is actually the effective utilization of search engines to draw traffic to a Web site, is an art. It is an ongoing, continuously evolving, high maintenance process that includes the customization of a site for better search engine ranking.

Yep, that pretty well covers it nowadays. Nothing fancy. Good content development and a little marketing know-how will go a long way into drawing potential customers to a web site.
