You might check out Yslow a Firefox add on. You can find it at: http://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/
I just found it the other day and with Yslow you get Smush which reduces image file sizes without reducing quality. Anyhow, check it out as you are in the biz of photos and it might be something you would be interested in.
You have a beautiful site the black, white and grays are nicely complimented by your graphics.
The only thing I don't like was in the top left corner your text it too small. This is the focal point of your home page so you might consider a larger font. I found other places on the site that in my opinion the font could be bigger. You are the ultimate judge so follow your own instincts.
As far as speed I used the Yslow and here are the results. I have high speed broadband so others will have slower times.
Home: 1.55s-7.089s I tried this one many times as it is the most important.
About: 2.122s
Contact: 1.2s
Lifestyle: 7.54s
Commercial: 9.038s
Nature and landscape: 9.301s
Events and ceremonies: 12.334s
Urban and architecture: 14.739s
All in all an excellent job. Keep up the good work!

Hi Chris. I checked back in to the thread and used the Yslow on the home page. This is what it reports:

Grade F on Make fewer HTTP requests

This page has 19 external Javascript scripts. Try combining them into one.
This page has 9 external stylesheets. Try combining them into one.
This page has 8 external background images. Try combining them with CSS sprites.

Decreasing the number of components on a page reduces the number of HTTP requests required to render the page, resulting in faster page loads. Some ways to reduce the number of components include: combine files, combine multiple scripts into one script, combine multiple CSS files into one style sheet, and use CSS Sprites and image maps.
I hope this helps.
