ok this is the deal. I am by no means an expert nor am I a novice. I've fixed built and repaired many pc's and have usually succeeded in in all of them... til now. I was in the process of removing spyware from said pc but couldn't get any of the programs on the pc to update including Windows updates they all failed. So i had the bright idea of downloading SB and a couple of other trusted apps to a USB key to install on my friends pc. None of them would load or up date. ( i did this because his pc's browser kept getting redirected). After those attempts failed I then put the key into my pc again. You can guess what happened. I now have 2 unusable usb keys as well as a now unusable 300gb external HD. Not to mention this pc has 3 hd's. So after all the failed attempts as well as a reinstall of Windows XP on my friends pc nothing has changed. Even with a new install of xp his system is still infected. So I'm guessing that that will be the case for my pc. The only other solution I could come up with was to install a new Hd on his system and reinstalll windows. My ? is do i now have 3 door stops in my pc as well. Right now I'm looking at the most expencive pc repair job I've ever done. I don't have to pay for his new hd but I sure can't afford to buy myself 3 new internal hd's an external and 2 new usb keys. The only thing I learned was from Trendmicro's Housecall saying that it had to do with an autorun.inf virus which is of course transmitted through USB devices. The following is a reading of my pc not his.

Thank you for any help you all can give. Also if you need any more info I will be glad to give it.
Can YOU download? If so do the following:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.
* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.
Reboot the computer.
Run HJT again and save the log. Post back with both logs.
As for the infected USB devices you have to DISABLE auto run on those, or for now on the computer which they will attached to. MBA-M WILL scan those and clean them too. When you click Full Scan you will get a window asking what drives to scan just choose those also.
As far as the still infected other computer...did you do a full reformat before the reinstall? This should have wiped the drive of the infections also.

I am somewhat confused here...you either have given me a log from a different computer or you have made major changes in the anti-virus program on the original and said nothing about it.
In your first HJT log, you showed TWO anti-virus programs running, a BIG NO-NO. Only one to a computer is the rule, but your log clearly showed two, PC Tools AntiVirus and AVG 8. Clearly I should have mentioned it originally, I did not frankly because I didn't honestly notice it until earlier this evening when reviewing your post again. Rather than add a post I decided to wait until you posted back.
Now on this log there is NO sign of either program but now it shows that Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is at least installed on the machine, and shows in the Auto-Start programs but it does not appear in running processes, so it wasn't running when the scan was done. What is going on here?

Yes at the time of the original post I was using Avg8.5 and PC Tools free A/V scanner. Before I saw the reply to my post I tried Kaperski Security My girl suggested it as she had just renewed her subscription and had 2 more licenses. In order to install Kaperski I had to uninstall Avg and PC-Tools apps. It probably didn't show in the running processes because I was impatient and ran Hijackthis prematurely. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. I've been fighting this thing for 2 weeks and jumped at the chance to try a well known A/V suite. I am on a friends computer at the moment as soon as I'm able I'll boot my machine and re-post the results. If there is any thing you need please let me know and I'll do my best to follow through with what ever else you need.

Well as far as I can tell I'm still having problems. I tried to run windows update still failed. I managed to get spybot installed it also would not auto update either ( i had to manually update it ). It found some stuff. After the test I shut off system restore and shut the pc down. I still cannot access sites such as www.safer-networking.org or microsoft windows site to manually update it fails and the page's are not found.
