The Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, William Rehnquist, an outspoken conservative judge who swore in President Bush for his second term, died tonight at the age of 80. He had been fighting Thyroid cancer after being diagnosed in October 2004.

Rehnquist served on the court for 33 years, was appointed by President Richard Nixon and replaced Warren Burger in 1986 as the chief justice. He opposed Roe v. Wade in 1973, but has been a strong supporter of judicial restraint and states rights.

In his early days, the justice served as a lawyer and a law clerk, and while serving on the court, he strongly supported the rights of software copyright holders. His death is reported to be caused by complications from his battle with cancer. He died in an Arlington, VA hospital.

Only eight justices remain on the bench.

Sad to see one of the most consistent and sane suppreme court justices go, and to see any honourable man die.

Now president Bush can appoint another justice, ensuring that the suppreme court will remain in favour of justice and preserving rather than corrupting the constitution (mostly, there's always exceptions) for the foreseeable future and isn't corrupted by politically correct socialists.
