Sorry to hear that!
It worked exceptionally well on the same malware here in this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread112066.html

That's why I suggested it when I saw you were having trouble. But, you are right to wonder why the steps you already took didn't work - they should have worked.

Hang in there for Crunchie - I don't want to get in his way any more than I already have done.

Re: Fake Windows Security Message

First off. So far I have requested that you run combofix twice only and you have run it four times. Please only run it when asked. If you feel you do not require assistance, then by all means, do it by yourself. I cannot sit here trying to help and have the person on the other end think they know best :).

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Re: Fake Windows Security Message

Sorry to reply so late -- I didn't get home until a few minutes ago. Firstly, thanks again for anyone and everyone helping me out with this problem. If at any point my replies were rude, I apologize -- I'm just extremely frustrated with this damn virus/spyware. With specific regards to running CF, I only ran it additional times because it either crashed on me or gave some sort of error. Regardless, here's the smitfraud report:

SmitFraudFix v2.297

Just a quick question -- why exactly didn't/won't hijackthis and combofix delete the files of the spyware? It goes without saying that in the domain of virusses, I don't know an ass from an elbow, but I'd be intrigued to know why these damn things keep popping up and won't get deleted after these scans/fixes.

Re: Fake Windows Security Message

No problem with the extra running of combofix, it's just that I have soooo many ppl running combofix as many times as they see fit it gets frustrating :). The problem lies in the fact that when it's first run and deletes entries and then the person runs it again, only the log from the second run gets posted :).
Combofix obviously hasn't got the handle on each and every Smitfraud entry, so hopefully the following will sort it.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Looks ok :).

Let's get rid of Combofix now that we are finished with it.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    Attachment 5340

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Re: Fake Windows Security Message

I was on the internet, signed off, and started playing spider software and then a large window opened up claiming to be finding bad cookies, spyware, and viruses on my computer. There was even a woman's voice with probably an Asian accent telling me all kinds of dire things.

I disconnected my modem even though I was not on the internet, turned off my computer, and restarted it several times but the almost full screen window and crazy voice messages immediately start again.

The computer can be started in SAFE mode with C: prompt but staring in any other way brings up the false security window.

The window looks a tiny bit like a Microsoft window but there are overlapping words.

I was running Windows Vista and use Firefox as my browser. I switched to my Linux running portable to send this message.

Any suggestions what I am up against? Any suggestions on how to get it out of my Toshiba Laptop?
