about:blank virus
 

My homepage has been hijacked with about: blank virus for about three long weeks now. I have tried everything there is to remove it, but nothing works. It comes back just as soon as you delete the files with anything now. Also, a different about: blank pop-up window has been poping up, getting stuck, and forcing IE to shut down completely. I have been to forums and try to follow the advice given, such as different removal tools, but for some reason, (and i am pretty sure it has to do with this about: blank thing) IE on my computer will not alllow me to download anything that has to do with spyware removal, and if it does, none of the programs are able to connect to the internet and get the proper updates they need to function to their fullest ability. Is there a patch (hopefully) out there that i am oblivious to?

Does anyone out there know how to rid a computer system of such a parasite??

You Have A Variant of the CoolWebSearch Trojan.

Please Download CWShredder from HERE and run the Program in safe mode . Press the "Fix Button" Let it fix all variants. Next, Close the program and all windows and IE windows and run hijackthis and Post a Fresh log.

Reboot to SAFE mode to run swshredder

reboot computer and post a new log

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

I have same problem. Nothing gets rid of it. The only difference between what I've tried and what you said is running in safe mode. I'll give it a shot.

I had the exact problem you're describing and I used Ghost Surf, and then checked it with Ad-aware, which I update daily. I have deleted all of the other free programs.
I don't have any problems anymore.

No problem- it just makes it easier (and faster) for us to get to the bottom of a given member's problem if he/she starts their own thread, and that thread remains dedicated to their problem alone. In others words, that approach helps us all. :)

i have had this virus for about a month and i just did everything the messages instructed...it said to post the log that i got from hijackthis...so i guess i can post it here..I am new to all this so any help i recieve would be greatly appreciated. When exactly will the about:blank thing go away? Is it gone now or do I still need to do more?

about:blank trojan removed!
(aka HomeOldSP hijacker)

I tried most adware programs to no avail.
The wicked pest kept returning.
Now I am happy to report that there is a cure:
Adware Away.
It is as easy as pie to use.
The about:blank trojan was killed in minutes.

Click "more" on Adware Away's menu.
Icons with names of various hijackers are displayed.
Click on those bothering you, and they're gone!!

In fact it also trashed
CoolWebSearch, Lycos SideSearch and IstBar -
trojans I didn't even know I had. All I can say,
"Adware Away is FANTASTIC".

Does the program actually remove them, or just disguise them?? I am trying to get more info on it. If it only prevents the running of these programs it's not much cop. You also have to pay for it.

Yeah crunchie. Adware Away actually zaps about:blank trojan!
They have a five day free trial. The tech support guy is great. Responded to me immediately. And even updated his fine program the same day with a suggestion of mine.

After running Scan on the first page of Adware Away, click on More. This takes you to a menu of Hijackers. Click on the about:blank icon. It is zapped instantly! The trojan, that is! (not the icon.) hehe

It was like finding the cure for cancer. This guy was so happy he paid ten bucks extra for their CD. The program even found other malware on my PC that I was ignorant of, as mentioned above.

No, just a guy with a spyware problem, and I was reffering to the first point to this topic, using the cwshredder. BTW: New problem, I ran cws shredder, and removed the problem and fixed everything just dandy, now the about:blank thing keeps coming back every other time i turn on my pc, how do i kill this SOB virus permanently!?

After posting that last one, I tried that program that was posted by happyguy. It seemed to work, the about blank crud isnt coming back for now. However I am remaining skeptical about it. It actually found alot more crud than i thought it would. I guess ad-aware doesn't really find everything. Anyway, it's working for me, but try it at your own risk. I'll let you know if I have an reoccurrances. thanx for the help everyone!

Using only one adware/malware removal tool is only a partial approach. You will find the same advice everywhere you go looking for answers - use two or three such tools in combination!

Yes- absolutely. The people who write these removal utilities are always one or two steps behind the #$^$&* who are writing the malware programs; there is no single program which will catch/fix all of the problems.

CWShredder version 1.59.1 now fixes this. Please update yours :) . HJT version 1.98 is out too so you should update that too.

Could someone link me to the update? the programs are unable to update on their own on my computer.

Also the we page i believe i got this virus from, is now unreachable by my pc. It still is reachable through other pcs but not mine, anytime i try to go there or try to br redirected there, i am taken to about:blank again and the virus is uploaded to my pc again. how do i fix this?
