Are we talking about developing a new joomla shopping cart or using what existing shopping carts are available?

What complex operations will you be needing? Separate attributes for each product. If you currently have a Joomla site 1.2 you can install a new virtue mart component and configure to suite. Just visit joomla.org download and install? Quick and easy.
