File Associations changes when renaming a file

Im using WinXp ;

When I rename a file; I get a message that tells me that I will lose the file association as it thinks i am changing the file extension also "as the file extension is listed in the name of the file".

How to correct this and not show file extensions in the names of the files.

thank you!

Re: File Associations changes when renaming a file

When you rename a File with a file extension in it, try not to change the file extension. but for some reason, you want that file extension won't show up, just follow this instructions.

Open My Computer >> goto Tools Menu >> choose Folder Options >> click the View Tab >> check the Hide extensions for known file type in the Advance settings List.

and the extensions will be hidden for example: ".exe , .doc"

and if ever still the extension won't hide. you are maybe infected by a virus.

Open MY COMPUTER
open the TOOLS TAB, in the drop down menu,
Click on FOLDER OPTIONS
open the VIEW TAB

enter a check mark "HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES"

this will prevent the file associations from being lost when renaming a file.
