how do you connect to laptops together via an ethernet cable?

Please can someone help me connect my two laptops together via an ethernet cable?

if it is just 2 laptops being connected use a crossover ethernet cable, if it more than 2 use a switch.

of course you can just use a switch for 2 computers but its a bit of a waste of money....
