| Re: Constant Computer Freezes Ok, since you say you will delete what needs to be deleted let's begin there. Run HiJackThis again. What I need to see is an Uninstall list. To do this do the following; 1. Start HijackThis 2. Click on the Config button 3. Click on the Misc Tools button 4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button. You will now be presented with a list of programs installed on the computer. At the bottom right you should see a button Save List. Click this specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here. You can also either print it out or save it someplace on the computer where you can find it for later use. May be that no programs need to be removed but it is good to have the list. You should go through that too and see if there are programs you have installed that you know absolutely are no longer used, like software for and old printer or camera you no longer have. Hard drive is 140gb with 80 gb used, not too bad, slightly more than half but there are probably things you can get rid of and free up some space. Now you say; Quote:
Go through the computer, where ever he saves "stuff", look for pictures, if you or he wants to save those then burn those to a disk and then get them off the computer. Same goes for videos. I always tell folks not to keep those things on the computer but burn them to disks for backup. That way you don't run the risk of losing them if the computer should fail. It is a lot easier later to get them back and to take a look at them and say, "heck I don't want these anymore" and throw the disk away. If he uses this for school work and has valuable things like papers, reports, etc., burn those to a disk also. A word of caution, you may think it is rubbish but he may really and truly not think so, that hard drive is not over loaded so take some care in just dumping things. Most of the slowness and freezing probably comes from the number of programs running all the time and we can eliminate some of those after the clean up is done so take care in removing things. Just want to avoid some family turmoil here.:) Next do some general cleanup of temp files and stuff like that by using either ATF-Cleaner or CCleaner. Both are good clean up programs. CCleaner is a little more "in depth" but only use the Default Scan portion of that if you choose it. Make sure your browsers are closed when you run it. When you open it what you would see is the Windows Tab selected and various items are all ready selected with green arrows. Don't change anything. Just click the Analyze button. It will quickly scan the computer for items which can be removed. Once it stops it will show all that can go and how much space you will gain. Click the Run Cleaner button and it will free up that space. Do those steps and give me the Uninstall list and we can go from there. Judy |

| Re: Constant Computer Freezes See...told you that you better ask your son:) We will leave the games and music alone. What I DO see that can be removed are the following; Axife Mouse Recorder DEMO 5.01...this one is a demo program so that definitely can go because in order to keep it you have to pay for it. FBrowsingAdvisor...this one corresponds to a program that is either malware, installs malware, or is bundled with malware. Outerinfo...this one also can/is associated with malware and absolutely should go. Go to Add/Remove and see if you can Uninstall those three. If they are not listed then let me know. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop. * DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M. * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt. Post back with that log. There are others in the Uninstall list that will need to go as they are outdated BUT let's get rid of the others before doing these as you will need to download the updated version first. J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 Java(TM) 6 Update 2 Java(TM) 6 Update 3 Java(TM) 6 Update 5 Judy |
