Removal of Home Search Assistent

I have Home Search Assistent on my computer that uses Windows XP. I tried using Adware but that didn't work. I found some directions online (using a Google search of "Home Search Assistent AND removal") and found some really complicated steps. Can anyone direct with me with simples steps to remove Home Search Assistent. It's been there for awhile and I'm slowing losing the ability to use certain functions like AIM. Thank you so much if you can help!!!!

Re: Removal of Home Search Assistent

Unfortunately, most variants of the Home Search Assistant (HSA) are very difficult to remove. The methods of infection used by HSA variants are constantly evolving/changing, and they have the ability to "morph" the names of the malicious files they use in such a way that the names of those files can change every time you reboot your computer. That being the case, there are no "simple steps" for 100% assured removal.

1. The free utilities "about:buster" and "HSRemove" can remove some of the HSA variants. Download the programs from the following site and run them. Read the instructions on the download pages carefully:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4286.html

2. At the above site there is also a "spyware" removal tutorial which has more information on general prevention/removal techniques and tools; you should give it a read:

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

2. Download HijackThis:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:

Create a new separate folder on your drive for HijackThis, move the program into thids folder, and run it from there. (Don't run HJT from within any Temp or Temporary Internet folder, and don't run it directly from your desktop.) Do not have HJT fix anything yet, only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...". Save the log in the folder you created for HiajckThis, open the log in Windows Notepad, and cut-n-paste the entire contents of the log here. The log contents will tell us a lot about what "nasties" have crept into your system, and once we analyse the log we can tell you what to do from there.

Thank you for responding!! I really appreciate it. :) One of the files says to unzip it. How do I do that? I remember waaay back I had to do that once but it wasn't successful.

Re: Removal of Home Search Assistent

With older versions of Windows you needed a third-party program to deal with .zip files, but Windows XP has that ability built-in now.

Just right-click on the zipped file or folder and choose the "Extract" or "Extract All" option. This will start the Compressed Folders Extraction Wizard; it's pretty straight-forward from there.

Hi! I just ran all the programs you suggested. I came up with this through HiJack! Can this computer be saved? Also AIM is no longer working on this computer.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and remove:
WildTangent
WeatherBug

Close all browser windows before scanning with HJT. Scan again and have HJT fix the following entries:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tqjvn.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\tqjvn.dll/sp.html#37049

Reboot into Safe Mode and go to:
C:\WINDOWS and delete sdkxk.exe and winfv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete netng.dll
C:\Program Files and delete the WildTangent folder

Reboot normally, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log.

Hi!
Thank you for your reply. I could not find netng.dll in C:\Windows\system32. I tried everything else but a lot of the programs weren't there as "tqjvn.dll." AIM worked for a minute but then shut down again. Here is what I have now:

Re: Removal of Home Search Assistent

Can you please download this file from here:

Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad into this post.

Do not reboot or stop your PC until you receive a reply to your post.
