Using c++ to send email with smtp

I am a new c++ programmer that migrated from java. I'm glad i've finally found a "real" language.... Anyways... I have been trying to write a c++ program to send email using the smtp. I am not looking for code, i'm looking for a good resourse on the subject... I've become very frusturated searching the web and any of the c++ books i have fail to even mention sockets. Any pointers? My end product would need to be able to support the TLS feature of most modern mail servers..

Thanks for any help,

DYL
