Is there any educational operating system?

Recently I am studying operating system design. I wanna find a educational operating system which is small but has complete functionality. The educational operating system should be well documented. Do you guys know one like this?

dr dos. I don't know what you mean by "small", but its not a gui, which takes out a lot of bload in operating systems such as *nix and MS-Windows.

There's a few on SourceForge; except some are still at just booting an image and displaying a small string, right now.
