Problems with a DNS Changer Trojan Hi guys. I'm having some right trouble at the moment. I posted on another tech forum and so far have received no help. So i thought i'd try over here. These are my posts from the other forum to get you up to speed with my problem. About a few weeks ago i noticed my Windows Updates no longer working. The error code meant there was a problem connecting to the windows server. So i thought it would fix itself. But it didn't. I did a bit more digging and this error code was linked to people having a DNS changer trojan. I did a spyware scan with Spyware doctor and this trojan came up. I tried to remove it with Spyware doctor, it said it had been removed. I restarted the pc to find it was back again. I scanned with superantispyware which found it also. Appeared to 'remove it', after a restart it was back, but this time windows update got a bit further. It found updates but when it started to download them it stopped and produced a different error code 8024402C. So it seems nothing i do actually removes it. I did some more searching on the internet and found some advice to change the DNS ip's in the registry that the trojan was using to the ones i want to use on the pc. I did this and they just changed back to the trojan DNS entries. So to some up. This trojan is stopping me downloading windows updates and downloading anything from the microsoft website. It is also stopping any antivirus and spyware software from connecting to servers to get definition updates etc Any help would be much appreciated as this is the most stubborn spyware/malware ive ever had. Service: Windows Tribute Service - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\kdhum.exe -- End of file - 10385 bytes I used combofix as i read in another DNS changer post that was recommended. Combofix found a few files, said it had to restart to remove them, just before the computer restarted i got a BSOD. Then windows wouldn't boot as the registry was either corrupted or not found. So i had to put my Vista DVD in and do a repair. Windows loaded up and the bloody trojan is still there :-( Ok. So i did a bit more digging myself. I found that a file called kdhum.exe in the system32 folder was a very suspicious file. I managed to update antimalware and ran that again. It found 5 registry entries linked to the DNS changer trojan. I also found in the C:\ and D:\ there is a folder called & "$RECYCLE.BIN" with a recycle bin inside. This turned out to be linked to the DNS trojan. So i restarted in safe mode. Removed the kdhum.exe, then i ran antimalware and removed the registry entries. Then i deleted the 2 $RECYCLE.BIN folders and ran cc cleaner and then restarted the pc. Now my windows updates work. The kdhum.exe hasn't come back. The registry entries have gone and not come back but the $RECYCLE.BIN folders and file within are back again. AND i can hardly open any websites now. I can get google to work and it can provide me with a search list but if i click on any websites i get "page not found". Msn messenger no longer works and i can't update any definitions again as they can't connect to their servers to download them. It appears to be random when websites work and when they don't. Like this one is working now, but then if i try it in 5mins it may no longer be working. This is driving me crazy. Any help you can give would me much appreciated. :)

| Re: Problems with a DNS Changer Trojan Hello redrevis and welcome to daniweb. Sorry you are having so many problems. You should not be using Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could adversely impact your system and prevent it from ever starting again. as you have found. You need to uninstall combofix. Do it this way; Go to Start, Run Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there. When shown the disclaimer, Select "2" Next you need to turn off some services which are running automatically at start up. To do this do the following: Click the Start button. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. From the Control Panel home page, choose the System And Maintenance option. On the System And Maintenance page, click Administrative Tools. From the Administrative Tools page double-click on the Services option. # When prompted by User Access Control to verify that opening the Services Control Panel applet is allowed, click the Continue button. If you are not prompted, you have either disabled User Access Control or are logged in with an account that does not have the ability to run with administrative privileges. You should now be at the Services Control Panel applet. You are going to have to scroll through this list and in alphabetical order you will see to find these services. One by one I want you to double click on each entry. First if it is running you will see a STOP button. Click the Stop button to Stop the service. When it is stopped then go to the Start Up Type section and click the small arrow next to where it says Automatic or Manual. If it says Automatic, change it to Manual. If it says Manual then change it to disabled for now. Click the OK button and move on to the next one. Stop the Service if it is running and definitely change the start up type to DISABLED. Windows Tribute Service - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\kdhum.exe Once you have done this with all of the above entries then click APPLY And close out that services box. Reboot the computer. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. | Re: Problems with a DNS Changer Trojan WOW, i am impressed with the speed in which you responded. Thank you very much. TBH before i read your reply i had realised that by removed kdhum.exe and the registry entries that somehow i had made things worse. So i did a system restore back to the combofix system restore. So you can pretty much disregard the last paragraph of my first post. I then removed combofix as you said. Although i got no prompt it just automatically removed. Sorry i should have mentioned at the start im using vista. I did what you said by disabling the services. BUT the Windows tribute Service one was very strange. When i changed it to disabled, it automatically changed back to automatic. So i changed it to disabled again and it automatically changed back to automatic. So i changed it to disabled again and then i got this message: "This specified service does not exist as an installed service" "Windows was unable to query status for service Windows Tribute Service. The remote connection on local computer has been broken." And guess what, yep it had changed back to automatic. Anyway i plowed on. Did the malwarebytes scan. Here's the log: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.30 Database version: 1414 Windows 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 2008-11-21 07:33:37 mbam-log-2008-11-21 (07-33-37).txt Scan type: Full Scan (C:\|D:\|) Objects scanned: 286264 Time elapsed: 1 hour(s), 29 minute(s), 22 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 2 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 3 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Windows Tribute Service (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. | Re: Problems with a DNS Changer Trojan Looks to me like things are clean. MBA-M removed your Trojan, including your Windows Tribute Service and the TCIP entries. Are things running well? Judy |

Re: Problems with a DNS Changer Trojan No i still have the same symptoms as before. No software can update including malwarebytes. Same thing happening with webpages getting page cannot be displayed. Remember my last paragraph in my first post. The problems i was having then is exactly what im having now. "AND i can hardly open any websites now. This is driving me crazy." So by doing the removal it seems to have made things worse. The kdhum.exe is still in the system 32 folder as well. :'(

Re: Problems with a DNS Changer Trojan I have a question for you. I asked you to Remove from Automatic Start up the following services; Spyware Doctor, TeamViewer 3, SupportSoft Sprocket Service, but they are still showing in the log did you remove them from auto start services? Do you use a Router? If so you must reset that router too. Try this too, shut down the computer, unplug the internet cord from the computer, reboot to safe mode go into C:\Windows\system32\kdhum.exe and delete that ONE file. Run MBA-M again. Then shut down, plug the internet cord back into the computer, reboot to normal mode and run HJT again. Post the logs here.

Re: Problems with a DNS Changer Trojan Ok i have just found something out which is quite interesting. In my house we have 3 computers. 2 pcs and 1 laptop. We use a wireless router which the laptop is connected to wirelessly and the 2 pcs connect via ethernet cables. 1 pc is used as a server to host an online game server. The other pc is my personal one which is used the most. So i went on the laptop and could access all the internet fine, every webpage opened etc. No problems there. I went onto the server pc and that pc has the same symptoms as my personal one. So to some up, when i had the trojan on my personal pc the only thing that didn't work was windows updates, which is obviously bad as i can not get any security update fixes. After removing the trojan windows updates now works but no programs can update themselves, i can't access webpages properly and my remote connection to the server pc no longer works. How the hell does this make sense. Surely there should be more problems with the trojan than without?? Im getting really confused now. I really really don't want to have to format this pc as ill have to buy another HD just to back everything up. I mean i have the most important things backed up but if i formatted there would be a lot of things i would 'like' to keep.
