Win 98 computer, I tried to format hard drive but think I screwed it up

Hi
I have a Win 98 gateway desktop computer
I wanted to reformat the hard drive to erase my files etc., before I give away the computer.
I did the following;
went in to MS dos mode
cd\
format c:/s
then Y
Then I switched off the computer,
Inserted the Win 98 CD-ROM in the cd drive (D) and switched it back on.
Chose Boot from CD-ROM
then Start windwos 98 set up from Cd Rom
I get the following error
'Set up cannot install windows 98 on your computer. an error was detaeted while formatting your primary hard disk partition"
The when I click enter I get D:\>

Any ideas,
Thanks for your help
EMW

Try booting the CD to a command prompt and doing everything again...

How did you get to DOS Mode?
(That is the only thing I see you might have done wrong)

I went to start menu, picked restart in MS DOS mode

Not exactly sure what you mean, i have the CD in before I restart and I select reboot from CD ROM, when I get the D:\>should in type in something, i tried "run:...

At the moment the computer is just a large paperweight :(

See if this helps:

The instructions are for a dual-boot, but if you just follow the first part of either attachment you should get Win98 installed.
