| userint32.exe and aurora popups Recently I received an IM from a friend that said something like "this is cool, check it out" where "this" was a link. After clicking on it, a popup sent me to open a new page and immediately the message started sending to everyone on my buddy list. Clearly it's a trojan worm and has started affecting my system. When I used to start up I'd get a msg asking if I wanted to run the application userint32.exe. When I googled the name it suggested I use ewido security suite. Now I've run Spybot, Ad-aware, Symanted and this new ewido program (with all updates). I still get Aurora popups constantly but have gotten rid of the userint32.exe I think (it no longer comes up upon starting my comp). Also, I just recently ran HJT and got the following results. Can you help me get rid of the popups? What part of this worm is still infecting my system? | Re: userint32.exe and aurora popups Hi AlliAnne629, welcome to the site :) As a new member I'm sure you were unaware of this, but one of our forum guidelines is that HijackThis logs only be posted in our Viruses, Spyware, and other Nasties forum. I'll move this thread to that forum for you now. |
| ||
| Re: userint32.exe and aurora popups OK- now that we're in the right forum, let's dig in. You will need to either print out any directions we give you from now or save them into a Notepad file, because you will need to be disconnected from the Internet for much of the cleaning process. If you have a cable or DSL connection, you should physically disconnect the network cable from your computer. There are two things you need to take care of before we do any work with HijackThis: 1. C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE The log entry above indicates that you had at least 2 instances of Internet Explorer running when you ran HijackThis. Before actually fixing problems with HijackThis, you must make sure to close/quit ALL instances of your web browsers. HijackThis cannot fully perform its fixes while browsers are running. You should also close Windows Explorer and all other non-essential programs (AIM, iTunes, Yahoo Messenger, etc.) 2. C:\DOCUME~1\ALLISO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe The log entry above indicates that you are running HJT from within a Temp/Temporary folder. Please do the following: Create a folder outside of any Temp/Temporary folders for HJT and move it there now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do. One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if HijackThis (and other data that you care about) is living in those Temp folders, it will be erased along with everything else. After taking care of the above: 1. Open your Add/Remove Programs control panel and uninstall: Viewpoint WeatherBug My Search (and any similar programs such as MySearchBar, MyWay, MyBar, etc.) 2. To fix the evil Aurora/Nail.exe infection: - Open ewido again and update it. Don't run a scan yet though; just close it after updating. - Download Nailfix from here: http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.p...50515010747824 Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet. Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following: 1) Restart your computer 2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8. 3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear 4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode. For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal. Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan. Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check: F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked. 3. Restart your computer in normal mode and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan. We'll work on remove the remaining infections from there. |
