| Cool Web Search hijack My start page has been hijacked. I have run Spybot, I have anti-virus set for every night, and have used Hijackthis all on numerous times... but nothing helps. I have even been through the registry and changed things manually, but as soon as I set my start page to what I want... google... it changes right back to coolwebsearch as http://81.222.131.49/index.php. I also got, pretty much when this got done, a little search toolbar that sits right above the taskbar that is called isearch... and there is no way that I see to remove it, but it is a pain. Like I have said, I have run these programs over and over again day after day, and it does not help. Here is my last HiJackthis log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 3:45:16 PM, on 5/22/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Unable to get Internet Explorer version! | Re: Cool Web Search hijack subhelix, Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :). - The version of Internet Explorer your currently using might be out of date, since there's no indication of a version in the header. Be sure to check for, and upgrade to the newest version as soon as possible, if necessary. =============== Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then: 1. Click "Free Online Scan". 2. Click "Scan now, it's free". It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down: 1. Select all available drives. 2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean". 3. Click "Scan". When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted. =============== Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present: Desktop Search ShopatHomeSelect Agent The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software. =============== We need to see if there are any program segments (prefetches) that may be present and are connected with the problems you are having. To do that, please do the following: 1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders: eqn10.exe* dx8ispl.exe* CxtPls.exe* 2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them. Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it. =============== Now, let's open a command prompt by going to the start menu and then select 'Run'. In the box that pops up type in 'cmd'. The command prompt will open. OR You can go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following: regsvr32 /u cxtpls.dll It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save typing them in. =============== Run HiJackThis then: 1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section" 2. Click "Open Process manager" - Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following: C:\WINDOWS\System32\paytime.exe C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\eqn10.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\dx8ispl.exe C:\Program Files\CxtPls\CxtPls.exe Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain. =============== Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://81.222.131.49/index.php R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://81.222.131.49/index.php R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://81.222.131.49/index.php R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://81.222.131.49/index.php R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://81.222.131.49/index.php R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://81.222.131.49/index.php O2 - BHO: (no name) - {016235BE-59D4-4CEB-ADD5-E2378282A1D9} - C:\Program Files\CxtPls\cxtpls.dll O2 - BHO: AIM Helper - {D70E6A20-7060-4829-B3D7-B6624A1DE7C6} - C:\Program Files\AIM Toolbar\aimhelper.dll (file missing) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PayTime] C:\WINDOWS\System32\paytime.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SAHBundle] C:\DOCUME~1\Eli\LOCALS~1\Temp\shop1004.exe run O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vFtg32i] eqn10.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PayTime] C:\WINDOWS\System32\paytime.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [eo2mRSG6j] dx8ispl.exe O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm O15 - Trusted Zone: *.blazefind.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.clickspring.net O15 - Trusted Zone: *.flingstone.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.mt-download.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.my-internet.info O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchbarcash.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchmiracle.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.skoobidoo.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.slotch.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.slotchbar.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.windupdates.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.xxxtoolbar.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ysbweb.com O15 - Trusted Zone: *.blazefind.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.clickspring.net (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.flingstone.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.mt-download.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.my-internet.info (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchbarcash.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchmiracle.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.skoobidoo.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.slotch.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.slotchbar.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.windupdates.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.xxxtoolbar.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ysbweb.com (HKLM) O15 - Trusted IP range: 81.222.131.59 O15 - Trusted IP range: 81.222.131.59 (HKLM) O16 - DPF: {9EB320CE-BE1D-4304-A081-4B4665414BEF} (MediaTicketsInstaller Control) - http://www.mt-download.com/MediaTic....cab?refid=2732 Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked". =============== Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. If you've installed it for the first time: 1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed. 2) Next, "Enable all protection". 3) Exit the program. - Note: Remember to regularly check for updates. =============== After rebooting your PC, rescan with hijackthis and post a new log. Let me know how things are now. |

Re: Cool Web Search hijack You still have active remnants of the iSearch infection, which means that there's a good chance the infection will return in its full glory: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe O18 - Filter: text/html - {950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E} - C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\mfiltis.dll 1. You probably will need to get into Safe Mode to effect the removal of the isrvs folder, and F8 is the key that gets you to the Safe Mode boot menu. The problem is that you have to hit F8 at just the right time; if you hit the key too late, the system won't catch it, and Windows will just continue to boot normally. You need to hit the F8 before the Winodws start-up screen/logo appears, so the best thing to do is to just start tapping F8 right after you turn the computer on. If you miss the timing, just reboot and try again. 2. Also, you may need to "unregister" the mfiltis.dll file before you're able to delete it. Do the following: - Open an MS-DOS window, type the following command at the prompt, and then hit Enter: regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\mfiltis.dll - Close the DOS window once the command completes. - Run HijackThis again and have it fix: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe O18 - Filter: text/html - {950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E} - C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\mfiltis.dll - Boot into Safe Mode and try to delete these folders entirely: C:\WINDOWS\isrvs C:\Program Files\CxtPls - Empty your Recycle Bin and reboot normally. - Run HJT again and post a new log.

Re: Cool Web Search hijack After the post, I went back and reviewed the log and saw that O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe was still there. Well, I just tried 3 different times to fix this in HJT but as soon as I do, it comes back. Which seems kind of weird to me since I deleted the isrvs folder. Do you know what is going on with this.

Re: Cool Web Search hijack When malicious entries automagically reappear in a HijackThis, it's usually due to a hidden "mother file" which respawns the infections. Please do the following: 1. Download, install, and run these two detection and removal programs. Make sure to use their online update feature before actually having them perform their scans and fixes: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en 2. Download rkfiles.zip http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip Unzip the contents to a permanent folder. Reboot in Safe mode. Doubleclick rkfiles.bat It will scan for a while, so please be patient. rkfiles will save the results of its scan to the file "C:\log.txt". Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode. Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.

Re: Cool Web Search hijack You may also have the Bube infection. Please go here for the instructions on how to remove the Bube.d (aka Win32.Beavis) Removal [isrvs] infection. Please follow the removal instructions exactly. Once done, complete DMR's directions, repost a new log here and we will finish off the clean up.

Re: Cool Web Search hijack Ah man, I hope I don't but I will still follow through with your advice. But I scanned with the detection/removal tools, rkfiles, and HJT before I read the last post so I would still first like to post the logs. What the warning means is that if you connect to the Internet before the infection is entirely eradicated, yes- the pieces that are still left on your computer may very well open up a network connection by themselves and try to redownload what you've deleted.
