Windows XP 64-bit issues

The following known issues have been mentioned by Monarch Computer systems, who are usually the first vendor to have new AMD processors available in retail:

Quote:

Items that will not work regardless of configuration:
Norton Anti-Virus
Norton Systemworks
Promise 378 SATA controller driver
nVidia Forceware drivers on GeForce3 video cards
3Dlabs VP-series video cards – no driver planned
Creative Labs Audigy 4 Pro/Audigy/ – no driver yet

Items that will work:
ATI Radeon/FireGL video cards
nVidia/Quadro video cards
3Dlabs Realizm video cards
Matrox P series and Parhelia video cards
3Ware 9000-series SATA RAID controller (7000 and 8000 series beta driver available)
Creative Labs Audigy 2ZS
Creative Labs Modem – driver native
Lucent Modem – driver native
Adaptec 7902 SCSI – driver native – ZCR support not tested
Nero Burning Rom (32 and 64-bit)
MS Office
Power DVD 6
Win-DVD 5 – the installer warns that the application will not run on a 64-bit OS, and warns of not being able to install a file. The application will however function properly.

Desktop Configurations:

nForce 3-based configuration using MSI K8T Neo2-Platinum motherboard :
• No SATA driver disk needed for single SATA hard disk OS installation.
• When installing OS in a RAID configuration (must use driver floppy), during the first part of text-mode installation the Windows installer will report the following files missing-nvraid.cat & nvata.cat. These files can be skipped and the OS install will proceed normally.
• After installing the nForce chipset drivers and rebooting, the nForce ethernet controller and audio controller will show a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. The solution is to manually re-install device drivers using Device Manager. Have the OS search, but uncheck the two boxes specifying the search location.

nForce 4 Ultra configuration using the DFI Lan Party UT Ultra-D motherboard:
• No SATA driver disk needed for single SATA hard disk OS installation.
• When installing OS in a RAID configuration (must use driver floppy), during the first part of text-mode installation the Windows installer will report the following files missing-nvraid.cat & nvata.cat. These files can be skipped and the OS install will proceed normally.
• After installation of Power DVD 6, you will be prompted to run the DMA test. This test will run and fail, but any DVD-ROM/DVD-RW will be running in DMA mode.
• Windows Media Player will not playback DVD video (does have audio) with an nVidia video card installed unless at least Win-DVD 5 is installed. Windows Media Player will not playback DVD video with an nVidia video card if only Power DVD 6 is installed.
• After installing the nForce chipset drivers and rebooting, the nForce ethernet controller and audio controller will show a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. The solution is to manually re-install device drivers using Device Manager. Have the OS search, but uncheck the two boxes specifying the search location

nForce 4 configuration using the WinFast NF4K8MC-RS motherboard (u-ATX)

Via K8T800 configuration using the Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard:
• Cannot load OS using SATA. Must use SATA driver floppy for OS install to see hard disk. After going through text-mode and gui-mode install, and after the reboot the system will immediately BSOD. This happens with both the VIA SATA controller and the Promise 378 SATA controller.
• The OS can be loaded using an IDE drive. However, loading the Promise 378 SATA controller and attaching a SATA drive to it, the drive will not be seen in the OS. This appears to be a driver issue.

Via K8T890 configuration using the Asus A8V-E Deluxe motherboard:
• A SATA driver disk is needed to load the OS in single disk SATA mode. However, the ACPI/ATK10 driver is not installed and is not available from Asus at this time. The ACPI/ATK10 driver is properly loaded if an IDE drive is used for OS installation.
• There is no driver for the wireless LAN.

Intel 925XE configuration using the Asus P5AD2-E Premium motherboard:
• A SATA driver disk is not needed to load the OS in single disk SATA mode. However, the ACPI/ATK10 driver is not installed and is not available from Asus at this time. The ACPI/ATK10 driver is properly loaded if an IDE drive is used for OS installation.
• There is no driver for the wireless LAN.
• The Intel Matrix RAID function works properly.

Intel 915G configuration using the Intel D915GUXLK motherboard (u-ATX)
• A SATA driver disk is not needed to load the OS. This board has no RAID.
• The Intel GMA 900 video driver is native to the OS.
• After installing all drivers, there is am Unknown Device in Device Manager – Unknown Device on Intel 82801FB Interface Controller. This would have to do with the ICH6 SATA controller.
• Windows Media Player will not playback DVD video (does have audio) with an nVidia video card installed unless at least Win-DVD 5 is installed. Windows Media Player will not playback DVD video with an nVidia video card if only Power DVD 6 is installed.

Intel 915P configuration using the Intel D915PBLL system board:
• A SATA driver disk is not needed to load the OS in single disk SATA mode.
• Windows Media Player will not playback DVD video (does have audio) with an nVidia video card installed unless at least Win-DVD 5 is installed. Windows Media Player will not playback DVD video with an nVidia video card if only Power DVD 6 is installed.
• The Intel Matrix RAID function works properly.

Server Configurations:

Tyan 2882-based configuration with 3Ware 9000-series SATA RAID controller:
• All device drivers/chipset drivers are native to the OS with the exception of the on-board Silicon Image 3114 driver, which is available.
• The on-board ATI Rage XL video uses a Standard VGA driver, as a Rage XL driver is not available.
• It is possible to load the OS with the on-board Silicon Image 3114 SATA RAID controller using a driver disk.

Tyan 2882-based configuration with SCSI drive:
• Adaptec 7902 SCSI driver is native – no driver disk needed to load OS.
• No ZCR support tested yet (Adaptec or Intel).
• The on-board ATI Rage XL video uses a Standard VGA driver, as a Rage XL driver is not available.

Tyan 4882-based configuration with SATA:
• The Silicon Image 3114 driver will not work with this board. A 3Ware 9000-series card must be used.

Tyan 4882-based configuration with SCSI:
• Untested.

Workstation Configurations:

Tyan 2885/2875-based configuration with SATA:
• Must use Silicon Image 3114 driver disk to load OS.
• All device drivers/chipset drivers are native to the OS with the exception of the on-board Silicon Image 3114 driver.

Tyan 2895 (nForce 4 Pro)-based configuration with SATA:
• A SATA driver disk is not needed to load the OS in single disk SATA mode.
• After installing the nForce chipset drivers and rebooting, the nForce ethernet controller and audio controller will show a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. The solution is to manually re-install device drivers using Device Manager. Have the OS search, but uncheck the two boxes specifying the search location.
• When installing OS in a RAID configuration (must use driver floppy), during the first part of text-mode installation the Windows installer will report the following files missing-nvraid.cat & nvata.cat. These files can be skipped and the OS install will proceed normally.
• PowerDVD5 or 6 will not install. Getting “Ikernel.exe cannot be copied to c: Program Files(x86)\CommonFiles\InstallShield\Engine\6\Inte
l32. Appears to be a permissions issue.
• WinDVD5 installed and works OK.

Re: Windows XP 64-bit issues

i guess that these people will be making 64 bit programs/drivers etc to run in conjunction with the release of the new system. please tell me if im wrong:?:

Re: Windows XP 64-bit issues

Suggest that people read the linked article and not just the extract I've quoted above. There are additions to it which keep it current.

Nortons will certainly have future updates to make it suitable for use. Many manufacturers of components will also release suitable drivers, but don't assume that all products will end up with 64-bit drivers. Older components probably won't.

Re: Windows XP 64-bit issues

Seems the plot thickens. Check this mention about device drivers which popped up at the Inquirer:
Quote:

A MAJOR MANUFACTURER of what we IT trade types call "peripherals" has described the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows as not being a standard operating system. An INQ reader wisely asked whether Canon could supply the beautiful in theory 64-bitness to his small i350 printer, but technical support at the Japanese firm gave him a reply which may serve as a warning to others if they want to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Windows which is currently available.

Said Canon technical support to our reader: "We are not producing drivers for this OS at present as Canon have deemed XP 64 as a non standard OS designed for professional high end use.

"It will only be the top of our range designed for applications of an advanced business nature that will initially be supported on the 64 bit platform. However, Canon will monitor the take up of the new OS and respond accordingly, if necessary."

The techie concluded: "We would urge everyone upgrading to a 64 bit OS to investigate the compatibility of existing peripherals designed for 32-bit operating systems."

We would suggest that if a company as mighty as Canon is saying this, it would be very very wise to check on drivers before you make any steps you might later regret. Ask Intel and AMD tech support what they think. They are likely to give you cogent answers. And while you're at it, ask Microsoft. And HP. And everyone else.

Definitely cause for checking device driver availability before jumping hastily to XP 64-bit version ;)

Re: Windows XP 64-bit issues

there are better options out there which will work on xp 64. For example AVAST anti virus and there is an trial version of it. It works great on my PC.

Re: Windows XP 64-bit issues

there are some issues with all of micromedia's stuff like for example flash player witll not work if I use the 64 version of explorer. If I use the 32 version which is included in XP 64 it works just fine.
