| Problem with Generic Host Process popup and Internet Explorer opening very slow Hi For the last week I've had some really irritating annoyances with both my desktop and my laptop. First of all, this popup with "Generic Host Process had to be closed" came up. After looking at Event Viewer it looks like there is something wrong with the WIA service, so I have set this one's start up type to "manual", and after that, these pop-ups have disappeared. Another problem is that IE is very slow, and when I open Windows Explorer, it needs a lot of time to find all the disks and show the catalogues (flashlight moving from left to right showing). I post my Hijack This log below, I hope someone is able to help me here. | Re: Problem with Generic Host Process popup and Internet Explorer opening very slow Hi, and sorry for the late reply I have disabled the WIA service, but still get the error message. I now get this error message in Event Viewer (application error) (but in Norwegian), event 1004 Hendelsestype: Feil Hendelseskilde: Application Error Hendelseskategori: (100) Hendelses-ID: 1004 Dato: 04.06.2005 Klokkeslett: 16:29:25 Bruker: I/T Datamaskin: STUE-PC Beskrivelse: Feilende program svchost.exe, versjon 5.1.2600.2180, feilende modul unknown, versjon 0.0.0.0, feiladresse 0x009f9eec. It seems to me like there is something wrong with my printer installation (HP PSC 2610), a lot of other people have had similar problems. I tried to follow this recipe to get rid of the problems: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/f...hreadId=849173, but unfortunately it did not help much. Now all printer drivers and software are uninstalled, but the error message is still there. I really don't know what to do here. With best regards, Alexander |

| Re: Problem with Generic Host Process popup and Internet Explorer opening very slow Unfortunately, svchost manages many different Windows files. Without being able to tell which exact file is faulting, I can't suggest any specific places to look. Quote:
- If the printer really was giving you trouble, did you make sure that you removed all of the components that were installed with the printer? I know that HP can load your system up with all kinds of "accessory" programs in addition to the basic printer driver software. - Can you do a System Restore back to a day just prior to the time the problem started? That might help. - Quote:
- Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up) - Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types". - For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves): Important: If any data that you care about is stored in the Temp folders listed below, you need to move it to a safe location now or it will be erased along with everything else! 1. Cookies 2. Local Settings\Temp 3. Local Settings\History 4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files - Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder. - Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK. - Empty your Recycle Bin. - Run the Disk Defragmenter utility. You'll find the utility in Start menu->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools - Reboot normally. |
