| IE/Firefox homepage redirected, can't use Hotmail, eBay, others, no System Restore I've spent the day looking for (and trying) various solutions to my problem, but so far haven't managed to fix it. Here's a quick rundown of the obvious symptoms: My Firefox browser home page (which used to be the Firefox/Google page) is now pointed at google.co.jp. This persists even when typing "www.google.com" manually. I've discovered that IE (which I never use) is also affected. I cannot get into my Hotmail account. I can get to the login screen, but no further; upon hitting the button to submit my username and password, I get to stare at a blank window. Likewise with eBay's search function. Attempts to use the System Restore functionality fail. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I've downloaded HijackThis, and have created a logfile with it (I closed all browser windows, but I was *not* in Safe Mode). The file it produced is pasted below. Thanks for any advice or information y'all feel like dispensing. -- Jake --------------------------------- Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 2:00:22 PM, on 5/13/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\acs.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS2\bin\VersionCueCS2.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\DefWatch.exe C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoctrl.exe C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoguard.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvraidservice.exe C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nTrayFw.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS2\ControlPanel\VersionCueCS2Tray.exe C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\apache.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat 7.0\Distillr\Acrotray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\VPTray.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nSvcIp.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIndex.exe C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nSvcLog.exe C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe C:\Program Files\ResChanger 2005\ResChanger2005.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Ahead\NEROPH~1\data\Xtras\mssysmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\lib\NMBgMonitor.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopCrawl.exe C:\Program Files\NETGEAR\WG311T\wlancfg5.exe C:\Program Files\PhoTags Express\Photags AutoDetect.exe C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nSvcAppFlt.exe C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\apache.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS2\data\database\bin\mysqld-nt.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\unsecapp.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopMail.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Jake\Desktop\HJT\HijackThis.exe O2 - | Re: IE/Firefox homepage redirected, can't use Hotmail, eBay, others, no System Restore Ok, I see several things. First, let's fix the LSP. Download LSP-Fix and run it, fixing what it tells you to. Next, continue by downloading CCleaner, and specifically choosing the most recent version. Then, follow these steps: 1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop. 2. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon. 3. Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options". 4. After the new window appears select the "View" tab. 5. Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "Display the contents of system folders". 6. Under the "Hidden files and folders" section select the radio button labeled "Show hidden files and folders". 7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types". 8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating system files". 9. Press the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button and shutdown My Computer. 10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files. Now, install the program. Open it, and choose the 'Options' tab. Inside, hit the 'Custom' tab, and add the following folders (Note: Not all of these files are on every computer. If one of these isn't present, skip it): C:\Windows\Temp C:\Temp C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temp C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\History C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Cookies C:\Windows\Prefetch After doing this, move back to the 'Cleaner' tab, and inside this, be sure your open to the 'Windows' tab. Inside, check the box labeled 'Custom Files and Folders'. Next, after following all of these steps, you're ready to scan. Run scans in both the 'Cleaner' and 'Issues'. Note: It might take several scans in each to remove all of the junk. ____________________ Now you're ready for Ewido. Follow up by downloading Ewido Security Suite.
Post back here with the Ewido scan log, and a new HJT log. Thanks. |

| Re: IE/Firefox homepage redirected, can't use Hotmail, eBay, others, no System Restor Okay, I followed your instructions, and here's the Ewido log (it didn't find anything, but I had run Ewido earlier today, and it removed something like 280 infected objects. Unfortunately, the new logfile overwrote the old). I'll put the new HJT log in a separate post, for readability. By the way, I really appreciate your taking the time to help me out. Thank you! -- Jake ------------- --------------------------------------------------------- ewido anti-malware - Scan report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created on: 9:26:05 PM, 5/13/2006 + Report-Checksum: BCB52C6B + Scan result: No infected objects found. ::Report End |

| Re: IE/Firefox homepage redirected, can't use Hotmail, eBay, others, no System Restor Hmm, disappointingly, I see nothing definitive in your log that points to the problem. However, I AM suspicious about a couple: 1)ResChanger 2005 - Do you know what this is/use this program? 2)PhotoShow Deluxe Media Manager - Do ya kno what this is/use the program? ____________ Secondly, we're gonna use Adaware and see if it picks up anything else: Please do the following: Download, install, update, configure, and run Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06.
Lastly, run HJT again and post a log back here, along with answers to those questions about the programs. Thanks. |

| Re: IE/Firefox homepage redirected, can't use Hotmail, eBay, others, no System Restore Try the following also; Download the Hoster. Run it and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it. You can edit the host file with this program too. |

| Re: IE/Firefox homepage redirected, can't use Hotmail, eBay, others, no System Restor I followed the above instructions, and nothing was found. I was getting pretty frustrated when, all of a sudden... BSOD! After some initial cursing, I checked out the BSOD message, did a bit of research, and uninstalled my nVidia firewall. Suddenly, all of my problems went away. This was very interesting to me, since I'd previously turned off my firewall with no change in the problems I was having; it took uninstalling the thing to make the computer work properly. Thanks for all the help - I've got several new tools in my arsenal thanks to you folks. I really appreciate the time you spent poring over my logs and giving me advice to try and help me get my computer back on its feet. -- Jake |

Heh good job :) And awsome job researching. Thanks. |

| Re: IE/Firefox homepage redirected, can't use Hotmail, eBay, others, no System Restor Well, I can't help but think that if I'd only gotten the BSOD (and its mystery-solving error message) earlier, I could have saved you folks a lot of effort on my behalf. Still, your advice did help me clean up something like 280 "infected objects" that I would have otherwise been blissfully unaware of, so it's not entirely wasted. Thanks again! -- Jake |
