Computer Running Slow and Programs Locking Up
 

Help!

My computer has been running really slow. I have run Spybot, Ad-Aware and Trend finding some problems but not stopping my major problems. I am also having problems with programs locking up. Task Manager says they are not responding. When I end task it does not work even if I try multiple times. When my cursor is over the program screen I get an hour glass. CPU is 2% - 4%, Network at 618 MB and System Idle Process at 95% - 97%. When I try to restart it does not work. When I shut down I get End Program on Drag to disk and on WMS Idle. It then does a clean restart but not a shut down. I installed AVG and ran a scan. AVG is running in the background. I just noticed that in my Windows folder I have about 100 folders like $NtUninstalllKB873333$. Inside this folder is another folder called Spuninst. Is this right?

While you have alot of unnecessary items, none seem particularly malicious. Couple of questions for you though, Do you happen to have more than one anti-virus software installed and enabled? If so you should immediately uninstall one or the other. It is okay to have more than one anti spyware (in fact recommended as some update faster than others and you can insure that you get all the latest spyware definitions.) but virus software will work against one another. Dual firewalls can prevent internet access as well, and can make it impossible to download.

One of the biggest problem that I can see straight off the bat is a massive amount of programs running at the same time. Any executable (.exe) program running out of program files can be responsible for hogging a good chunk of cpu. If you have so many programs loading and updating at start-up, it doesnt surprise me that they are probably jammed up and bumping into each other-plus hanging constantly. then to make matters worse without letting all these programs sort themselves out you then begin shut down. This is more or less telling all those programs to first start up successfully then shut down all at the same time. You now have program gridlock.

I am going to recommend that you download from PCworld.com or tucows.com a program called sysinternals process explorer. This will replace your task manager and give you a visual representation of what is going on. Just point your mouse at the graph and it will tell you what is currently overpowering the CPU. It will also show programs listing as they start.

Even though I sound like an echo, I completely recommend that you visit iolo.com and download the trial version of System Mechanic 7. This will help you get rid of all those programs that are unecessary at start up, free up RAM. instantly end hanging or non responsive programs, tell you in plain english what all those processes are for so that you can keep what you need and stop what you don't, it will clean up your internet tracks, temp files, will check spyware, will automatically optimize connection and performance, will let you customize every component and visual effect. And about 1000 other things. The best part is that it can continue to look after you automatically, and it keeps track of any changes you make so that you can undo something just in case. For about 20 something, this is about the best investment and the most useful tool you can get to keep your pc or laptop running smoothly. I have tried many many programs and although there are some things an advanced user will dislike about system mech (but luckily things that can be fixed) the non techie will feel like they brought home their very own geek to watch over their shoulder. (I really ought to be a iolo salesperson already-that last sentence was marketing gold right? Makes you just a little sick right? LOL)
