formatting shutdown

I am trying to format and reload windows on a dell Inspiron 1000 laptop. When it is reformatting it shuts off at 16%. I have tried different power sources with the same result 3 times. I just added 256 MB of ram from crucial. The machine was not shutting off with this added memory while in windows, but will not format. I have formatted dozens of machines but never had this result.

auto shutdown can occur with overheating.

Re: formatting shutdown

While waiting for a post I did notice the machine was pretty hot and had shut it down for a bit. And it did finally reformat and reload windows after some cooldown.

When booting up to windows it didn't shut down at all which seemed odd. Also the exhaust fan is on the bottom (nice design by dell) adn another in teh back and the laptop pretty much sits flat.

Anyway thanks for the good advice.
